  • 26、Bill Gates on how to fight future pandemics

WHEN HISTORIANS write the book on the covid-19 pandemic, what we've lived through so far will probably take up only the first third or so.The bulk of the story will be what happens next.

I believe that humanity will beat this pandemic, but only when most of the population is vaccinated(接种疫苗).Until then, life will not return to normal.

As the pandemic slows in developed nations,it will accelerate in developing ones.Their experience, however, will be worse. In poorer countries, where fewer jobs can be done remotely, distancing measures won't work as well. The virus will spread quickly, and health systems won't be able to care for the infected.

Wealthy nations can help. But people in rich and poor places alike will be safe only once we have an effective medical solution for this virus, which means a vaccine.

My hope is that,by the second half of 2021,facilities around the world will be manufacturing a vaccine. If that's the case,it will be a history-making achievement: the fastest humankind has ever gone from recognizing a new disease to immunizing (免疫)against it.

Apart from this progress in vaccines, two other big medical breakthroughs will emerge from the pandemic. One will be in the field of diagnostics. The next time a novel virus crops up,people will probably be able to test for it at home.Researchers could have such a test ready within a few months of identifying a new disease.

The third breakthrough will be in antiviral drugs. We haven't been as effective at developing drugs to fight viruses as we have those to fight bacteria. But that will Researchers will develop large diverse libraries of antivirals, which they'll be able to scan trough and quickly find effective treatments for novel viruses.

All three technologies will prepare us for the next pandemic by allowing us to intervene(干预)early when the number of cases is still very low.

Our progress won't be in science alone. It will also be in our ability to make sure everyone benefits from that science. In the years after 2021,I think we'll learn from the years after 1945. With the end of the Second World War, leaders built international institutions like the UN to prevent more conflicts. After covid-19, leaders will prepare institutions to prevent the next pandemic.

These will be a mix of national, regional and global organizations.I expect they will participate in regular"germ games”in the same way as armed forces take part in War games. These will keep us ready for the next time a novel virus jumps from bats or birds to humans.

I hope wealthy nations include poorer ones in these preparations, especially by devoting more foreign aid to building up their primary health-care systems. This pandemic has shown us that viruses don't obey border laws and that we are all connected biologically by a network of microscopic germs, whether we like it or not.

The best analogy(类比)for today might be November 10th 1942.Britain had just won its first land victory of the war,and Winston Churchill declared in a speech: “This is not the end.It is not even the beginning of the end.But it is,perhaps, the end of the beginning.”

1What are the three technologies that will prepare us for the next pandemic?

    manufacturing a vaccine fast

    diagnosing a virus at home

    developing antiviral drugs

    allowing us to intervene early

    A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④ D.②③④

2As far as poorer countries are concerned, which of the following is TRUE according to this passage?

A.pandemic disease is more likely to begin in poorer countries

B.Working from home can work well in poorer countries.

C.Health systems are sufficient to care for the infected in poorer countries.

D.Virus will cross borders if poorer countries fail to contain it.

3Why is the Second World War mentioned in Para.8?

A.The fight against the COVID-19 is similar to the Second World War.

B.People are suffering just as they were in the Second World War.

C.We should cooperate globally just as we did after the Second World War.

D.Countries are fighting each other like in the Second World War.

  • 27、   With the Internet, people can send and receive e-mails. On the Internet, people can skim over news. Using the Telnet, the user anywhere on the Internet can log into any other machine on which he has an account. It is possible to use the FTP program to copy files from one machine on the Internet to another.

But the Internet also brings us troubles.

Internet use seems to cause a fall in psychological health, according to research at Carnegie Mellon University. Even people(who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet) experienced more depression and loneliness than those who logged on less often, the two-year study showed. And it wasn’t that people who were already feeling bad spent more time on the Internet, but that using the Net actually seemed to cause the bad feelings.

Researchers are puzzled about the results, which were completely opposite to what they had expected. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others.

The fact that Internet use reduces time that was used for family and friends may be the reason for the drop in health, researchers said. Faceless, bodiless “virtual” (communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversations, and the relationships formed through it may not be so deep. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world through the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.

“But it’s important to remember this is not about the technology; it’s about how it is used,” said one of the researchers. “It really points to the need for considering social factors when you design new inventions.”

1The writer mainly wants to tell us that _________.

A.the Internet can bring people many advantages

B.the Internet use may cause psychological problems

C.the Internet users are not satisfied with their lives

    D.we shouldn’t use the Internet

2Why are the researchers puzzling over the results?

A.Because the results were completely different from what they had thought.

B.Because the Net proved socially healthier than television.

C.Because the Internet users were all healthier.

D.Because the Internet users experienced less depression and loneliness.

3What does the underlined part in the last paragraph mean?

A.What matters is not the technology but how it is used.

B.This passage is not about the technology but about how it is used.

C.We should remember to learn about the technology.

D.We should remember to learn how to use computers.

  • 28、   I have seen Charlotte waiting for a bus many times. She is in her 80s. She is small and thin. She lives in a nursing home near my home. I have got to know her as I stop and give her a lift any time I see her. Even if I am going in the opposite direction or I have just been out for a pint of milk, I still give her a lift.

Charlotte looks elderly and weak but last time I gave her a lift she told me she’d been on a helicopter ride, even showing photos to prove it! She had gone with her daughter and granddaughter and she looked as if she enjoyed the whole experience! I told her she was braver than I was! I also loved to do that in this technological age, and her family were considerate enough to print the photos out for Charlotte.

I met her recently in Lisburn town center where we both live. She was sitting on a bench with a few items of shopping. I asked her if I could give her a lift home, though she didn’t recognize me, as I was out of context for her - that is, I was not in my car. She explained she was going to visit the elderly in a nearby home. She thanked me for my offer but did not want to take me out of my way and was happy to take a bus as she usually do when going there. I told her it was my pleasure and planned to meet her a few minutes later when I had picked up my shopping. Charlotte happily agreed. I picked her up and dropped her off at the home. She told me someone else usually brought her home.

Charlotte might look like a thin weak old lady in her 80s but I can see through that, she’s young at heart, she can soar high into the sky and at the same time she’s grounded enough to visit “the elderly” who may need a visit, company and a friendly face.

When I grow up I want to be as young as Charlotte.

1Why does the author mention the helicopter ride in Para.2?

A.To show Charlotte’s passion for life.

    B.To praise Charlotte’s considerate family.

C.To explain Charlotte’s interest in aircrafts.

D.To prove Charlotte’s good physical condition.

2What can we learn from Para.3?

A.Charlotte recognized me the moment she saw me.

B.That day Charlotte took a bus to the nearby home.

C.It was a habit for Charlotte to visit the elderly in the nearby home.

D.Later I drove over to pick Charlotte up and brought her back.

3Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A.Tips on How to Grow Old

B.Happiness and Fun in the Old Age

    C.Friendship Formed on Car Rides

    D.A Young Lady Called Charlotte

  • 29、There is a change of attitude toward the pink and blue divide in toys. Target, the second—largestdiscount retailer(折扣零售店)in the US, announced in 2015 that it would get rid of signs labeling(标记) toys for boys or for girls. A UK campaign called Let Toys Be Toys seeks to get retailers to stop dividing toys and books for one gender(性别)only.

Researchers have worried about the effect of having toys that were sosegregated(分开的) by gender for sometime, says Lisa Dinella, associate professor at Monmouth University.

Clearly divided pink and blue toys—with dolls and tea sets on one side and trucks and building blocks on the other—are actually a pretty recent development. As recently as the 1970s, toys sold in the US were not always marketed with clear gender distinctions. By the 1980s and 1990s, however, toys started to become more gender segregated, though it was still not so sharply divided as today, says Elizabeth Sweet, a lecturer in sociology at the university of California, Davis.

While it may seem like a small issue, toys help children to develop new skills, says Dinella. Dolls and pretend kitchens are good at teaching kids early language skills. Building blocks like Lego and puzzles teach skills related to space, which help set the groundwork for learning math. “Both genders lose out if we put kids on one track and they can't explore” says Dinella.

Some parents try to introduce other types of toys and get away from the strictly pink and blue divide. But it's difficult for parents to ignore the marketing and get their kids toys or costumes meant for the other gender, says Dinella. While some parents try to broaden the toys their children are ex—posed to, there is often a social cost to the child for crossing gender boundaries. “So it is hard for parents to throw out the rules,” she says.

Researchers hope that one day, toys will stop being broken up by gender and will instead be categorized by type, like puzzle toys, dolls or children's bikes. Toy choices, Sweet says, should be based on kids’ personal interests, and not on their gender.

【1】What trend is described in the first paragraph?

A.Offering different toys to boys and girls.

B.Giving kids more time to play with toys.

C.Making more colorful toys for kids.

D.Ending the gender divide in toys.

【2】How will the pink — and — blue toy divide affect kids according to Dinella?

A.Helping them develop in a quite normal way.

B.Making them better communicate with others.

C.Urging them to master more knowledge and skills.

D.Causing them to miss many opportunities to learn.

【3】What is hard for the parents mentioned by Dinella?

A.Buying kids toys at relatively low prices.

B.Buying kids toys aimed at the other gender.

C.Buying kids new types of toys.

    D.Buying kids high— quality toys.

【4】What might be Sweet's attitude to Target's decision?

    A.Supportive.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Uncaring.

    D.Curious.
