二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   The beautiful oceans that cover three-quarters of our planet are home to some of our most valuable natural resources. However, while our knowledge of outer space is quite wide, the same cannot be said about the deep waters, thanks to the fact that any attempts to monitor them have either been too awkward or too expensive. Now, California-based Liquid Robotics has come up with an invention that is both economical and easily used across the waters.

Called Wave Glides, the autonomous robot that resembles a surfboard consists of two interconnected sections - on the surface is a glider(滑翔机)fitted with solar panels, battery and sensors. Right below underwater is a navigation(航行) glider.

The robot travels at a snail’s pace gathering data. This data is quickly sorted by its solar-powered computer chips and then sent ashore for analysis. This robot contains no battery that needs recharging. It is a zero emission (排放)device that uses wave energy to push itself forward.

The company is working towards making the robot even more autonomous than it currently is. As it now stands, while the robot can sense a danger such as a ship or a shark, it does not have the ability to move away. Liquid Robotics wants to change that and program the robot so that it has the ability to move away from danger.

To encourage the general public to get involved with the informative data collected by Wave Glider, the company is planning to launch four of the robots on a yearlong trip across the Pacific. Two will head for Tokyo and two for Sydney. All the data they collect will be posted online and the person who comes up with the most innovative interpretation will be awarded a prize.

1What can we infer from Paragraph 1?

A.It costs less to explore the sea than outer space. B.Outer space has more resources than the oceans

C.People do not have as much knowledge of oceans as space. D.Three quarters of natural resources come from the oceans.

2What do we know about Wave Glider?

A.It is eco-friendly. B.It can be used as a surfboard.

C.It’s shaped like a snail. D.It uses solar energy to move.

3What change is most likely to be expected of Wave Glider?

A.Traveling more quickly. B.Sensing danger autonomously.

C.Analyzing data underwater. D.Keeping itself away from danger.

4Why will four robots be launched on a yearlong trip?

A.To find more natural resources. B.To collect data around the world.

C.To get people informed of collected data. D.To test their ability to work underwater.

5What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To promote an online contest. B.To call on people to explore oceans.

C.To introduce a new invention. D.To share the data collected in oceans.

  • 27、   Homelessness is a big problem across the world. Many people and organizations are working to solve it. Mel Young from Scotland and Harald Schmied from Austria are two such people. In 2001, the two men attended an international conference about the problem of homelessness. Later, they began to wonder if football could help solve the problem. In 2003, they decided to start the Homeless World Cup organization. It chooses and trains local homeless people for the yearly football competition. Today, about 500 people from almost 50 countries play in the Homeless World Cup. And the program is changing lives.

Damien is from Ireland. For many years, he struggled with drug(毒品)addiction. But in 2006, he played for Ireland's Homeless World Cup team, and since then, he has been drug free!

Many of the Homeless Word Cup players, like Damien, have struggled with drug addiction. However, some players are homeless because of poverty. Alex is one of them. He says, “I was born in Mathare, the biggest, worst slum (贫民窟) in Kenya. I could not find anything to eat. Also schooling was a problem. My life started when I started playing football.” Football gave Alex joy. It taught him to work hard and helped him believe that he could achieve something.

Football can even help people who have experienced extreme tragedy. Najib, a young man from Afghanistan, has lived through much war. Many of his family members have died. But football has helped him survive. “It is only during the games that I do not think about my situation. I'm not interested in anything other than football and it’s the only thing I desire” Najib explains.

Drugs, poverty and war are common causes of homelessness. Playing in a football competition may not directly treat drug addiction, solve poverty or end warbut it can give people emotional strength and help them learn important life skills.

1What do we know about the Homeless World Cup?

    A.It is held every year.

B.It first took place in 2001.

C.It is the idea of two troubled football lovers.

D.It was introduced at an international conference.

2After playing in the Homeless World Cup, Alex ______.

A.gave up taking drugs B.began to live a rich life

C.got a good school education D.became confident about the future

3What does the underlined word “desire” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.Remember B.Watch

    C.Want D.Create

4What would be the best title for this text?

A.Football for everyone B.Last hope for the homeless

C.End homelessness from now on D.Beat homelessness through football

  • 28、   The Earth is facing a climate crisis, but it’s also getting greener. According to a new research, the rise is largely because of China and India. A study by NASA, based on extensive satellite imagery, has revealed that the two countries with the world’s biggest populations are also responsible for the largest increase in green plants.

A third of the leaf increase is attributable to China and India, due to major tree planting projects as well as a vast increase in agriculture. “China and India account for one-third of the greening, but contain only 9% of the planet’s land area covered in vegetation (植被)—a surprising finding, considering the large populations in the countries need much land,” Chi Chen, the study’s lead author said in a statement.

Between 2000 and 2017, a NASA sensor gathered data of the Earth’s surface from aboard two satellites, the Terra and the Aqua. Using the data, researchers discovered that China is the source of a quarter of the increase in green leaf area, despite possessing only 6.6% of the world’s vegetated area. Forests account for 42% of that increase, while croplands make up a further 32%. China’s increase in forest area is the result of forest conservation and expansion programs, established to combat the impacts of climate change and air pollution.

Rama Nemani, a researcher at NASA’s Ames Research Center, said in a statement, “When the greening of the Earth was first observed, we thought it was due to a warmer, wetter climate from the added carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, leading to more leaf growth in northern forests, for instance. Now, with the data, we see that humans are also contributing,” Nemani said. “This will help scientists make better predictions about the behavior of different Earth systems, which will help countries make better decisions about how and when to take action.”

    1What’s the text mainly about?

A.The climate crisis the Earth is facing.

B.A solution to global climate warming.

C.Actions taken to fight against air pollution.

D.China and India’s contributions to global greening.

2Why is the finding considered surprising for China and India?

A.They need much land for agriculture.

    B.They are greatly polluted countries.

C.They are rich in natural resources.

D.They both face a serious food crisis.

3What percentage does China make up of the total green leaf growth?

    A.6.6%. B.25%.

    C.33%. D.42%.

4What did Rama Nemani’s want to emphasize?

A.The scientists made a wrong prediction.

B.Climate is a critical factor in leaf growth.

    C.Human efforts cannot be ignored.

D.It is never too late to take actions.

  • 29、Would you like to be a king or queen? To have people waiting on you hand and foot? Many Americans experience this royal treatment every day. How? By being customers. The American idea of customer service is to make each customer the center of attention. Need proof? Just listen to the commercials. Most of them sound like the McDonald’s ad: “We do it all for you.” Actually, not all stores in America roll out the red carpet for their customers. But wherever you go, good customer service means making customers feel special.

People going shopping in America can expect to be treated with respect from the very beginning. Most places don’t have a “furniture street” or a “computer road” which allow you to compare prices easily. Instead, people often “let their fingers do the walking” through the store hot lines. From the first “hello”, customers receive a satisfying response to their questions. This initial contact can help them decide where to shop.

When customers get to the store, they are treated as honored guests. Customers don’t usually find store clerks sitting around watching TV or playing cards. Instead, the clerks greet them warmly and offer to help them find what they want. In most stores, the clear signs that label each department make shopping a breeze. Customers usually don’t have to ask how much items cost, since prices are clearly marked. And unless they’re at a flea market or a yard sale, they don’t bother trying to bargain.

When customers are ready to check out, they find the nearest and shortest checkout lane. But as Murphy’s Law would have it, whichever lane they get in, all the other lanes will move faster. Good stores open new checkout lanes when the lanes get too long. Some even offer express lanes for customers with 10 items or less. After they pay for their purchases, customers receive a smile and a warm “thank you” from the clerk. Many stores even allow customers to take their shopping carts out to the parking lot. That way, they don’t have to carry heavy bags out to the car.

1By quoting (引用) the McDonald’s ad: “We do it all for you”, the author intends to_______.

    A. suggest that customers believe what mercials say deeply

    B. show readers the American idea on good customer service

    C. express all the stores pay much attention to the customers

    D. persuade readers to choose the stores with ads correctly

2In the USA, what may you do at first if you want to do some shopping?

    A. To visit a professional street with lots of similar stores.

    B. To pare prices in many shops in the same street.

    C. To make phone calls and get better shopping choices.

    D. To receive other customers’ answers to the questions.

3Which of the followings shows American stores offer convenience to customers in this passage?

    A. The store clerks don’t usually sit around watching TV or playing cards.

    B. Some stores offer price bargain to the customers like a yard sale.

    C. The clerks give customers a smile and a warm “thank you” after paying.

    D. Some stores open new checkout lanes when the lanes are crowded.

4Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?

    A. Customer Service in America

    B. Excellent Stores in America

    C. Shopping Rules in America

    D. Being King or Queen in America

One day, six-year-old Pete stepped out of his house to buy a lollipop(棒棒糖). It had rained all night long. But now the sun was shining, and the wind was blowing all over the pavements, blowing the rain away. Pete got on his tricycle(三轮脚踏车) and rode away. He felt excited since this was the first time he had gone to a shop on his tricycle. “I’ll ride through every puddle(水坑),” he said to himself.

He rode right through the first puddle, and splashes of water flew up in the air. But when he looked around, the puddle was still there. Behind his tricycle was a long black line. His front wheel had made it when it came out of the puddle. Pete noticed it and he was pleased. “I meant to do that,” he laughed. (But he hadn’t really.) So he rode right through the next puddle, and his black line shone behind him. But now, when he looked around, instead of one black line there were three, because this puddle was a very big one, and all three of the wheels had gone right into it. “I’m an engine-driver,” cried Pete. “And those are my railway lines. Oooo! Ooooooo!”

And he pedaled through every puddle he could see. Sometimes it was a small puddle, and then there was only one railway line. And sometimes it was a middle-sized puddle, and then there were two railway lines. And sometimes it was a very big puddle, with a lot of sky in it, and then the whole tricycle went through it, and there were three railway lines.

Suddenly Pete remembered that he was going to the shop on the corner to buy a lollipop. He put his hand in his pocket to make sure his two pennies were still there. One of them, two of them… Pete felt each of them with his fingers. “It was good of me to remember,” he told himself. “I’m a very good rememberer.”

    Paragraph 1:

As he stopped for a break, a little cat came out of a house.
