26、 Distance, just like currency, becomes incomprehensible when it reaches large quantities.
So, when outdoor enthusiast and Midwest Mountaineering employee Elizabeth John says she only hiked the nearly 500 miles of the Colorado Trail over a period of six weeks, don’t let her fool you. That’s like walking from St. Paul to St. Louis—give or take a few dozen miles—plus thousands upon thousands of feet of altitude.
“I’m a gardener, I’m a busy-hands person, but busy feet are just as good,” she explains. “I don’t meditate, but maybe that’s the way I think about it—walking as a way to relax.”
John took childhood hikes in the Boundary Waters and caught her case of busy feet while hiking in Alaska as a teenager. With a background in paddling, mountaineering, and backpacking, she found long-distance hiking rewarding, though exhausting.
Since then, thru-hiking—hiking a long-distance trail(考验,试验) end-to-end in one hiking season—has gotten friendlier to beginners. John has given up 60-pound packs in favor of a lighter modern backpacking equipment. For her 50th birthday, she decided to fly to Spain and walk close to 500 miles of the Camino de Santiago. The Colorado jaunt, her first solo long-distance hike, followed a few years later in 2017.
“Going on a big walk is unreasonable and includes being uncomfortable, wet, hungry, sore, tired, lonely...it’s challenging,” she says. “It’s a leap of faith. But I found the rewards surprising and unexpected, some even waiting for me at home after the trip. There is a rhythm to walking, a physicality and simplicity...a discovery.”
Logging some 4,000 feet of elevation daily, John met many “trail angels” who provided shade, snacks, and sometimes beer at remote points in the wilderness, purely out of the goodness of their hearts. “You’re so excited, because you’re someplace so incredible, and it wasn’t easy to get there,” she says. “There was this moment when you love humanity, and you’re so proud of people for doing it.”

28、 The Real Neighborhoods of Oscar-Winning Film 'Parasite'
South Korea's Oscar-winning movie "Parasite" tells the story of class (社会等级) struggle through the sights and smells of Seoul. It made history this week when it became the first non-English language movie to win the Oscar for best picture. People all over South Korean social media celebrated.
The film is a story of two South Korean families - the wealthy Parks and the poor Kims. It shows the deepening inequalities in South Korea. The story has been welcomed by people around the world.
Much of "Parasite" was filmed on movie sets. But the idea for the Parks' home and the Kims' sub-basement apartment came from real neighborhoods in Seoul. A sub-basement apartment is a usually small, dark apartment built partly underground.
POVERTY DOWNTOWN
Ahyeon-dong is one of the last of the poor areas near downtown Seoul. It is where the Kims are said to live in the film. The neighborhood, which is now mostly older people, with few young couples or children, made several appearances in the film.
Sitting on a hill near the main train station, Ahyeon-dong has steep, narrow streets. Many of them end in long staircases that people climb to reach their homes.
Local people said rents for sub-basement apartments in Ahyeon-dong have risen to around $340 each month. The rental costs there have more than doubled in the past 10 years.
SEOUL'S ‘BEVERLY HILLS'
Across town is the area of Seongbuk-dong. That is where the wealthy Parks' home is set in "Parasite." It is known as South Korea's version of Beverly Hills – an extremely wealthy community in Southern California The area is home to many business families and diplomats(外交官). Unlike in Ahyeon-dong, the streets in Seongbuk-dong are clear of waste. They are also very quiet, with most homes hidden behind high walls, fences and security cameras. 29、 Teachers are conditioned to tolerate a lot of bad treatment—it’s a professional suffering—but what teachers at Sir G.E. Cartier Elementary School in London went through last spring seems beyond the call of duty: a few of them agreed to be tied to a rail in the gym while students hit them in the face with cream pies. Why on earth would they do that? To raise $3,000 – enough cash for an interactive whiteboard, the most desirable piece of educational technology on the market right now. These Internet-age boards are essentially giant computer touchscreens, and they are all the fashion in schools. But with little room for them in school budgets, many educators are doing whatever it takes to raise the money themselves. “We are a desperate breed, aren’t we?” says Sharon Zinn, one of three teachers who volunteered for Cartier Elementary’s whipped- cream-flavored activity.
At schools fortunate enough to have them, interactive-white boards are a blessing for educators struggling to attract a generation of students who got accustomed to using the Web from the early age. In the UK—where 70 percent of all primary and secondary classrooms have interactive whiteboards, compared with just 16 percent in the United States – students in those classrooms made the equivalent of five mouths’ additional progress in math. So far, the data on the efficacy (有效性)of touchscreens in US classrooms is inconclusive, but promising. Multiple recent studies suggest that the devices advance attendance rates and classroom participation. Ever since Dorchester School District 2 in Summerville installed 1,200 interactive boards in its classrooms, disciplinary incidents are cut down. “Students were bored” before the touchscreens arrived, says Superintendent Joe Pye.” Trips to the principal’s office are almost nonexistent now.”
But for some teachers, learning to use the device is not easy, and a generation gap has opened with teachers who are still used to writing lesson plans with a pen and paper. Many older educators are terrified by the boards, says Peter Kornicker, a media specialist in Harlem, where despite a student poverty rate of 98 percent, all 35 classrooms are equipped with touchscreens. ”As always, it comes back to the ability of teachers to master this technology,” says Andy Rotherham of Education Sector in Washington, D.C. “We have to train them to use it. Otherwise, it’s just another underused, expensive thing.”
【1】How does the author view the deed of some teachers at Sir G.E.Cartier Elementary School?
A.It is what most teachers are going through.
B.It is something worth praise.
C.It is too much for most teachers to tolerate.
D.It is due to the conflict between teachers and students.
【2】Which of the following is true about the present generation of students?
A.They are heavily influenced by the Web.
B.They don’t respect teachers and observe disciplines.
C.They are bored with the way teachers teach.
D.They are only good at mathematics.
【3】What can we know about the situation in the US?
A.A high percentage of schools are using touchscreens.
B.The effectiveness of touchscreens has been proved.
C.Touchscreens promote attendance and classroom participation.
D.All teachers are receiving training to use touchscreens.
【4】What is the most important to make the touchscreens a success in classrooms?
A.To get enough financial budget to equip classrooms with touchscreens.
B.To give up the traditional way of writing lesson plans with a pan and paper.
C.To familiarize more students with the use of interactive touchscreens.
D.To train teachers to master and use the modern device.
