二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Gone with the Wind was removed from the HBO Max streaming platform Tuesday, as mass protests against racism and police violence cause television networks to re-assess their offerings.

The multiple Oscar-winning US Civil War movie released in 1939 remains one of the highest-rated movies of all time, but its description of satisfied slaves and heroic slaveholders has led to criticism.

“Gone With The Wind is a product of its time and shows some of the racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been very common in American society.” an HBO Max spokesperson said in a statement.

“These racist descriptions were wrong then and are wrong today, and we felt that to keep this title up without an explanation and criticism of those descriptions would be irresponsible."

Protests have spread like wildfire across the US since the killing of African American George Floyd while in police custody(拘留), with calls growing for police reform and the broader removal of symbols of a racist legacy, including monuments to the slave-holding Confederacy.

Floyd died last month as a white Minneapolis officer pressed a knee into his neck for almost nine minutes. The officer has been charged with second- degree murder.

12 Years A Slave writer John Ridley said in a Los Angeles Times said Monday that Gone with the Wind must be removed as it “doesn't just fall short with regard to representation" but ignores the horrors of slavery and keeps “some of the most painful stereotypes(刻板印象) of people of color.”

The film will return to the recently launched streaming platform at a later date, along with a discussion of its historical background, the company said.

No edits will be made,“because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed."

“If we are to create a more just, equal and inclusive future, we must first acknowledge and understand our history.”

A.To show the seriousness of police violence

B.To compare his suffering with that of slaves

C.To call for the removal of racist monuments

D.To prove racism has been common in America

【3】What is John Ridley's attitude to Gone with the Wind?

    A.Positive

    B.critical

    C.objective

    D.unconcerned

【4】What can be the best title for the passage?

A.Gone with the Wind removed from HBO Max after Racism Protests

  • 22、   Toronto Wildlife Centre’s rescue team wants to match their expert skill with the latest technology to help more animals.

The rescue team wants to help animals fast and with an even higher success rate. They are looking at technology ranging from as simple as a quick-firing netgun to as complex as a remotely controlled trail camera that is connected to the cellular network. This would immediately inform them with a photo if an animal has been successfully trapped, or has returned to a site that they are monitoring.

A small thermal imager (热像仪) is another piece of equipment that the rescue team is looking at to add to their tool box. The technology would allow the rescuers to see an animal’s heat signature. This would be useful for finding animals hidden in brush, rescuing wildlife stuck inside buildings, or finding animals at night when it’s too dark to see. Say we know there’s an injured animal in a back yard with many hiding spots. We don’t want to storm there and scare him away. We want to be able to predict his movement and rescue him as effectively as possible and the only way we can do that is by knowing where he is, the rescue team leader, Andrew Wight said.

The team also has their eye on a camera-equipped drone (无人驾驶飞机). “We want to use drones for aerial (空中的) watching in situations like when we have a baby bird that came from a nest that is difficult to access. If there’s no other baby in the nest, we can build a new nest, and the parents will simply find their baby and relocate to the new nest. If there’s another baby in the nest, we can’t separate the family and will need to return the baby to the original one. If we have a camera-equipped drone, we will easily see if there are any other babies in the original nest and plan accordingly,” Andrew explained.

【1】What can we learn from paragraph 2?

A.The rescue team aims to simplify the technologies.

B.The remotely controlled trail camera is used to trap animals.

C.The remotely controlled trail camera must have internet access.

D.The rescuers will receive a photo only when an animal is trapped.

【2】How does a small thermal imager help rescue an animal?

A.By providing enough light at night.

B.By showing the location of the animal.

C.By giving off heat to warm the animal.

D.By offering a way to hide the rescuers.

    【3】What would happen without a camera-equipped drone?

A.The bird nest would be destroyed.

B.The baby bird would be deserted.

C.The rescue work would be difficult.

D.Another nest would have to be built.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.Rescuing Animals with Technology

    B.Toronto Wildlife Centre

    C.Fast Developing Technology

    D.Ways to Protect Wildlife

  • 23、I need a new phone. Like many of us with older model iPhones, my battery life is just a few hours and I’ve stopped updating the operating system to extend the phone’s life. But I’m having a tough time making the final decision. It’s not the cost. It’s not the inconvenience either. It’s the environment.

Making smartphones, laptops, and other tech products takes a lot of resources. This is partly due to the carbon emissions from the producing process. Still, the most negative impact comes from the mining of the rare earth metals that make your phone work. If you’re reading this on your phone right now, you’re holding about 0.034 grams of gold, 0.34 grams of silver, and smaller amounts of other rare elements. These are tiny amounts, but consider the demand for smartphones around the world.

All of these rare elements have to be mined from inside the Earth, in places like China and some African countries. Mining is hugely environmentally destructive: forests are destroyed, the ground is disturbed, and water quality in the area takes a dive.

Now take these environmental risks, and combine them with the fact that the average lifespan (使用寿命) of a smartphone is just two years, the length of your contract with your cell phone company. After that, if you’re lucky, you get a “free” upgrade. Awesome, right? Sure, if you ignore the fact that the environmental impact of a new phone is about the same as using your old one for a decade.

It’s nearly impossible to live in the 21st century without contributing to the destruction of the environment and climate change. I am guilty as well — eat meat and occasionally fly. But that doesn’t mean that we should stop trying to do better, or ignore the consequences of our actions. I urge you to think carefully about your next smartphone purchase no matter what those Black Friday ads may be trying to tell you.

【1】What does the author’s final decision refer to?

A.Going ahead with getting a new phone.

B.Taking action to help reduce pollution.

    C.Updating your phone’s operating system.

    D.Raising money for anew smartphone.

【2】Why does the author list specific numbers in paragraph 2?

A.To reveal the consequences of making smartphones.

B.To analyze the causes of making new smartphones.

C.To emphasize the huge demand for smartphones.

D.To provide solutions to cutting smartphone use.

【3】What message does the author convey in paragraph 4?

A.It is economical to upgrade your device.

B.The lifespan of smartphones is narrowed.

C.The upgrade comes at the expense of the environment.

D.Signing a contract spares users from economic pressure.

【4】What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

A.To push for environmentally friendly smartphones.

B.To discourage businesses from making smartphones.

C.To advise readers not to change smartphones often.

D.To demonstrate the negative effects of smartphones.

  • 24、Q&A on COVID-19 Vaccination in China

China has granted conditional marketing authorization for the first COVID-19 vaccine, and many places have planned to carry out mass vaccinations. Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about vaccination.

    1. How can one make a reservation to get a shot? Who can get vaccinated as soon as possible?

On Dec 5, China started vaccinating key groups. Individuals in these groups could not make a reservation themselves; instead local authorities would arrange for these individuals to be vaccinated. After that, local authorities will arrange for service to the general public.

People aged between 18 and 59 are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccination. The vaccination involves two shots, administered 14 days apart. The COVID-19 vaccines are provided to citizens for free.

    2. Who is not eligible for vaccination?

Those who should not get vaccinated include pregnant women, lactating (哺乳期) women and patients with the following diseases:

    Patients in an acute stage of fever and infection; suffering from immune deficiency or immune disorder; having severe liver or kidney diseases; having uncontrolled hypertension ( 高血压), diabetic complications (糖尿病并发症) or malignant tumors (恶行肿瘤);

    Patients with other progressive nervous system diseases and mental diseases or family history of such diseases;

    Patients who have been diagnosed with congenital ( 先天性的 ) or acquired immunodeficiency, HIV infection, lymphoma ( 淋巴瘤 ), leukemia ( 白血病 ) or other autoimmune diseases;

Patients with severe respiratory ( 呼吸) disease and severe cardiovascular ( 心脑血管) disease.

    3. Is it necessary to maintain prevention and control measures after vaccination?

Since no vaccine can provide 100 percent protection, a few vaccinated individuals could still get infected. The population immunity barrier has not been established at present. People still need to wear masks, maintain social distancing and practice good hygiene after vaccination.

    4. What to do when an adverse reaction occurs?

According to the informed consent ( 许可 ) for vaccination, side effects include pain, itching, swelling, numbness and redness at the area where the shot is given, and other reactions include fatigue, fever, muscle pain, headache, cough, diarrhea ( 腹泻), nausea ( 恶心), loss of appetite and allergy.

Places providing vaccinations are required to have medical rescue ability and be associated with local hospitals. Those receiving a vaccination must remain at the service site 30 minutes before leaving.

    5. Is it okay if people don’t want to be vaccinated?

Vaccination is voluntary. But China has planned to build a population immunity barrier, which can only be established when the vaccination rate reaches 60 to 70 percent. The general public is encouraged to get vaccinated.

【1】Which one of the below people can get vaccinated?

A.A 20-year-old college student who lost his appetite due to staying up late.

    B.A 30-year-old pregnant woman.

C.A 40-year-old man diagnosed with malignant liver cancer.

    D.A 65-year-old healthy woman.

【2】When approximately people in China get vaccinated, a population immunity barrier can be established.

    A.1.4 billion

    B.9000 million

    C.900 million

    D.90 million

【3】According to the passage, which one is correct?

A.Those receiving a vaccination can leave the service site within 30 minutes if healthy.

B.Every Chinese citizen must get vaccinated.

C.People may get numbness and redness all over the body after vaccinated.

D.People still need to wear masks even after the two shots of vaccination.

  • 25、   President Obama’s second Inaugural Address used soaring language to stress America’s commitment to the dream of equality of opportunity: ‘We are true to our belief that a little girl born into _______ knows that she has the same chance to succeed as anybody else, because she is an American’.

The gap between ideal and reality could hardly be _______ . Today, the United States has less equality of opportunity than almost any other advanced industrial country. Study after study has _______ the myth that America is a land of opportunity. A way of looking at equality of opportunity is to as to what extent the life chances of a child are _______ the education and income of his parents. Is it just as likely that a child of poor or poorly educated parents gets a good education and rises to the middle class as someone born to middle-class parents with college degrees? Even in a more democratic society. the answer would be no.

How do we explain this? Some of it has to do with discrimination (歧视). Latinos and African-Americans still get paid less than whites, and women still get paid less than men, _______ they recently surpassed (超越)men in the number of advanced degrees they obtain. Discrimination, however, is only a small part of the _______. Probably the most important reason for _______ of equality of opportunity is education. After World WarⅡ, we made a major effort to _______ higher education to Americans across the country. But then we changed, in several ways. While racial segregation(种族隔离)decreased, economic segregation increased. After 1980, the poor grew poorer, the middle stagnated(停滞不前), and the top did better and better. A result was a widening gap in educational performance – the _______ gap between rich and poor kids born in 2001 was 30 to 40 percent larger than it was for those born 25 years earlier, a Stanford sociologist found. Of course, there are other forces ______ . Children in rich families get more exposure to reading. Their families can afford enriching experiences like music lessons and summer camp. They get better nutrition and health care, which enhance their learning, directly and indirectly.

Now Americans are coming to realize that without extensive policy changes, their long cherished belief is only a myth. It is unreasonable that a rich country like the United States has made _______ to higher education so difficult for those at the bottom and middle. There are many _______ ways of providing chances for more to receive higher education, from Australia’s income-contingent loan program to the near-free system of universities in Europe. A more educated population produces greater innovation, and a booming economy. Those benefits are why we’ve long been ______ to free public education through 12th grade. But while a 12th-grade education might have been enough a century ago, it isn’t today. Yet we haven’t _______ our system to contemporary realities.

The steps I’ve outlined are not just affordable but necessary. Even more important, though, is that we cannot afford to let our country drift farther from _______ that the vast majority of Americans share. We will never fully succeed in achieving Mr. Obama’s vision of a poor girl’s having exactly the same opportunities as a wealthy girl. But we could do much, much better, and must not rest until we do.
