四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、I used to teach in public schools. After several years of teaching, what struck me was that IQ was not the only difference between my best and my smartest kids. Some of my strongest performers didn’t have super IQ scores. Some of my smartest kids weren’t doing so well. If doing well in school and in life depends on much more than IQ, then what is it?

    I left the classroom and become a psychologist (心理学家). I stared studying kids and adults in all kinds of challenging conditions, and in every study my question was: Who is successful here and why?

    We went to West Point Military Academy. We tried to predict which cadets (军校生) would stay in military training and which would drop out. We went to the National Spelling Bee and tried to predict which children would make the farthest progress in competition. We studied new teachers working in really tough neighborhoods, asking which teachers were still going to be there at the end of the school year.

    In all those very different contexts, one characteristic stood out. It wasn’t social intelligence, or good looks, or physical health, and it wasn’t IQ. It was grit (毅力).

    Grit is passion and perseverance for long-term goals. Grit is having patience. Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the months, but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it’s a marathon not a dash.

    Grit also matters in school, especially for kids at risk of dropping out. I asked thousands of high school juniors to take grit questionnaires and then waited around more than a year to see who would graduate. It turns out that grittier kids were more likely to graduate.

    However, we still know little about building grit. Perhaps that’s the work that stands before us. We need to take our best ideas and test them. We need to be gritty about getting our kids grit.

    【2】What does having grit require?

    A.Social intelligence, good looks and IQ.

    B.Good looks, physical health and IQ.

    C.Running a marathon and dreaming big.

    D.Passion, perseverance and patience.

    【3】The speaker’s studies show that grit would help ________.

    B.a competitor give up in advance

    C.a new teacher find an easy job

    D.a high school junior graduate

  • 25、“I sometimes get up at three or four in the morning to surf the Internet.”

    “ I checked my e-mail almost forty times a day.”

    “I seldom spend less than three hours each time on the net.”

    “I spend more time in chat rooms than with my ‘real-life’ friends.”

    Do you know any people like these? They are part of a new addiction* called Internet addiction. According to experts, Internet addicts* spend at least thirty hours online every week. They lose control of the time they spend on the Internet.

    For example, one college student was missing for several days. His friends were worried and looked for him everywhere but couldn’t find him. They called the police. The police found the student in the computer lab: he was surfing the Internet---for seven days straight.

    A study shows that about seven to ten percent of Internet users become addicted. The teenagers spend more time on the Internet than with friends and family. That’s why some experts worry most about young people.

    Is “surfing the Internet” a hobby or an addiction for you? You may have a problem if you have one of the following symptoms*.

    ★ You go out with your friends less and less.

    ★ You’ve decided to spend a short time online, but then you spend several hours.

    ★ You do not go to important family events or you do not do school projects because you like to spend hours on the Internet.

    What is the situation? Some experts suggest that people set strict limits on their time for internet use. You have to learn to control it, or the Internet would control you.

    1Internet addicts at least spend ________ hours online every week.

    A. twenty   B. thirty   C. forty   D. fifty

    2Some experts worry most about young people because__________.

  • 26、   For most people, it is easy to read faster. Your reading speed is just a matter of habit. At first, however, you may need to change your bad reading habits. It is important to pay attention when you read. Some people read books and watch TV at the same time. They can't concentrate on the reading material as well as the TV programs. A teacher once told me that I could learn anything well if I did three things: pay attention, pay attention and pay attention.

      There are some simple things that you can do to pay better attention and get more from reading. Many researchers say that you will improve your reading ability if you preview the passage before you actually read every word of it. Previewing is a good way to improve your ability to pay attention.

      To do a preview you should:

      ● spend 30-60 seconds;

      ● look at the title of the passage;

      ● look at the headings and subheadings. They are usually underlined, in italics (斜体字) or in dark print;

      ● look at the pictures, forms and explanations;

      ● read the first and last paragraphs quickly and glance(扫视) at the first sentence of each paragraph;

      ● close the book and ask yourself:

      What is the main idea?

      What kind of passage is it?

      What is the author's purpose?

      You might not think that you could do all these things in so little time, but if you do the preview correctly, you will have a good general idea of the passage. If you have a general idea, you will be able to understand and  remember the passage better.

      If you can preview better, your ability to pay attention will be better.

    1The writer tells us how to preview in order to  .

    A. improve our ability to pay attention

    B. help us read books as well as watch TV

    C. make us read faster than before

    D. teach us how to write a passage

    2According to the passage, how many things should we do when we preview a passage?

    A. 3. B. 6. C. 9. D. 12.

    3What is the best title for the passage?

    A. Reading Ability B. Habits

    C. Pay Attention D. Preview

  • 27、It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted by all people.

    Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and mathematics need not be taught in detail(详细地), either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.

    Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of human. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and most of all take an interest in the world.

    I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason.

    【1】People with little education usually .

    【3】The underlined word “well-rounded” in the passage means     in Chinese.

    A.圆满的 B.崭新的
