  • 26、Bees are unimaginably territorial(地盘意识强的), fighting to death to defend their home with painful stings (螫刺). But killer bees are particularly fierce. They appeared after African bees were imported to Brazil in the 1950s. By the 1980s, they had spread north to the United States, outgunning native bees along the way. Their massive attacks have killed more than 1,000 people.

Mario Palma, a biochemist at Sao Paulo State University in Brazil, who studies social behavior in bees, wanted to understand the basis of this aggression. So he and his colleagues swung a black leather ball in front of some killer bees and collected the bees whose stingers got stuck in the ball during the attack. They also collected killer bees that remained in the cell. The analysis suggested that killer bee brains have two proteins that—in the aggressive bees—quickly break into pieces to form a so-called “neuropeptide( 神 经 肽 )”, they reported this week in the Journal of Proteome Research.

Palma and his colleagues already knew that bee brains have these two proteins. “We were astonished when we identified some very simple neuropeptides, which were produced in a few seconds,” Palma said. Killer bees that remained in the cell did not make these neuropeptides, he reported. And when his team put these neuropeptides into young, less aggressive bees, they “became aggressive like older individuals”.

Palma added that these neuropeptides also increase the production of energy and alarm chemicals. They could also encourage the nerve cells in killer bees needed to make the stinging attack. “There is a fine biochemical regulation in the killer bee brain,” he said. Researchers have found these neuropeptides in other insects, but few had associated them with “fight” behavior.

    【1】What is special about bees?

    A.They are particularly fierce.

    B.They show territorial behavior.

    C.They were imported to Brazil.

D.They live in harmony with other insects.

【2】What finding surprised the researchers during the experiment?

A.There are two proteins in killer bee brains.

B.Young killer bees are fiercer than older ones.

C.The killer bees make an attack immediately.

D.Killer bee brains produce neuropeptide quickly.

【3】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Killer bees fight to death to protect their home.

B.Aggressive killer bees killed many people with neuropeptide.

C.Neuropeptide makes killer bees have “fight” behavior.

D.Neuropeptide has a great effect on killer bees.

  • 27、Most of us look forward to the weekend as a time to relax, connect with friends and family, and handle items from a to-do list that gets unnoticed during the work week. But as the weekday does come to an end, many of us are missing out on enjoying the weekend and instead experiencing a sense of anxiety and even fear for the upcoming week. Experts call this phenomenon Sunday scaries.

Sunday scaries, also known as the Sunday blues, arise when individuals expect the upcoming work week with a combination of various factors such as work-related concerns, unfinished tasks, the end of weekend relaxation, and the pressure to start the new week. As a result, individuals may find it challenging to unwind and relax before the new week begins.

A clinical psychologist, Renée Goff, said, “Sunday scaries are more than a physical heaviness for them, but they could even jump out of their skins due to the upcoming week. The negative emotions associated with Sunday scaries can have a significant impact on one’s mental well-being and overall productivity.”

“As a matter of fact, such anticipatory anxiety is a natural response that happens in preparation for anything that can cause pain or discomfort,” explains psychotherapist Angela Ficken. “Sunday scaries might even start bubbling up as early as Saturday, but tend to become less intense by the time Monday morning rolls around when you start your work week. This doesn’t mean we leave them unchecked.”

To battle anticipatory anxiety for the upcoming week, individuals can adopt self-care practices that promote relaxation and stress reduction. This may include engaging in hobbies, spending time in nature, exercising, practicing mindfulness or simply dedicating time to disconnect from work-related thoughts. Additionally, we can organize tasks for the upcoming week in advance to create a sense of control, reduce the Sunday scaries and promote a healthier work-life balance.

【1】What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

A.To lead in the topic of the text.

B.To tell background for the text.

    C.To offer suggestions to readers.

    D.To stimulate readers to imagine.

【2】How does Renee Goff find Sunday scaries?

    A.Avoidable.

    B.Imaginary.

    C.Normal.

    D.Harmful.

【3】What can be inferred about Sunday scaries from Angela Ficken’s words?

    A.They strengthen on Monday morning.

B.They tend to die down before Saturday.

C.They should be brought to our attention.

D.They will in no case disappear naturally.

【4】What does the last paragraph focus on?

    A.Theoretical basis for Sunday scaries.

    B.Approaches to fighting Sunday scaries.

    C.Positive aspects of anticipatory anxiety.

    D.Extreme suffering from Sunday scaries.

  • 28、The world’s biggest electric vehicle — a 45-ton mining dump truck named the eDumper — may have to give up its throne. The newcomer, powered with both electricity and a reserve of hydrogen fuel, is going to steal that title as the largest electric mining truck.

London-based Anglo American is developing the beast of a machine — it weighs 290 tons — as part of its sustainable mining vision. The conceptual work is done, but U.K-based Williams Advanced Engineering will bring the truck to life. The idea is to replace the vehicle’s diesel engine (柴油机) with a high-power modular lithium-ion battery (锂电池). “We are delighted to be involved in this innovative and exciting project which shows the potential of battery technology that can adapt to increased demands, from automotive and motorsport to ‘heavy duty’ industrial applications,” Craig Wilson, managing director of Williams Advanced Engineering, said.

While the eDumper — a mining truck used to move stones from the sides of mountains in Switzerland — relies entirely on pure electricity and pure physics for power, the Anglo American truck will use both a lithium-ion battery and a hydrogen fuel cell (电池) module. Altogether, the new truck will have over 1,000 Kilowatt hours of energy storage.

Hydrogen fuel is a clear fuel that produces only water as a by-product when consumed in a fuel cell. It’s typically produced from natural gas, nuclear power, or renewable wind and solar power. Adding hydrogen fuel cells to the vehicle’s battery will allow the truck to run for longer periods of time without recharging.

There’s also a third type of power that comes into play with the Anglo American truck: kinetic (动力的) energy created through the process of regenerative braking (再生制动系统). When an electric vehicle — be it the Anglo American truck, or the eDumper — rolls down a hill, that movement creates electrical energy for the battery as you brake. The electric motors power the car through the battery’s stored energy, but can also become mini generators that return some energy back to the battery.

After Anglo American finishes test trials with the truck, the firm will conduct studies to understand how the truck’s power units can be used to provide energy storage in other applications.

【1】What can be known about “the eDumper”?

A.It weighs more than 290 tons.

B.It is powered by hydrogen fuel.

C.It will no longer be the largest electric truck.

D.It will discourage buyers for being expensive.

【2】What can be inferred from Craig Wilson’s words?

A.Battery technology is the key to updating vehicles.

B.Battery technology is the basis of manufacturing trucks.

C.The development of the lithium-ion battery is limited.

D.The future of the lithium-ion battery is promising.

【3】What is the benefit of adopting hydrogen fuel cells?

A.It can save a lot of money.

    B.Vehicles become more eco-friendly.

C.It has no environmental impact at all.

D.Vehicles no longer need to be recharged.

【4】According to paragraph 5, which of the following can be a feature of regenerative braking?

    A.Autonomous braking.

    B.Energy transformation.

    C.Simple operation.

    D.zero-carbon emission.

  • 29、   A drowning boy was rescued by a group of beachgoers who formed a human chain to drag him from the powerful surf yesterday.

Joshua McQuoid,12, from Napier, New Zealand, was paddling when he was knocked off his feet and pulled into the sea by the strong undertow (潜流). His friend Hikiroa Ratapu raised the alarm but the current was so strong that rescuers, led by a German tourist and two policemen, were also repeatedly knocked down.

Another seven passersby joined the rescue. They held hands to form a human chain so they were finally steady enough to hold onto the schoolboy and pass him onto the beach at Napier's Marine Parade. Joshua was unconscious when he was finally rescued from the water and was given first aid on the sand.

He was then taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital and discharged later that day. Napier Constable Paul Bailey told the local news website that the boy would have drowned if he had not been able to pass the child along the human chain.

He said at one stage Joshua became lost in the surf and had become a “dead weight”. But the waves luckily knocked the schoolboy against Mr. Bailey's legs so he was able to grab him. He told the website, “Then we saw the human chain they'd formed and I was able to pass him over.”

His father thanked every person who helped save his son's life during an interview with RadioNewZealand. The video of the touching rescue effort filmed by a young bystander has already been viewed hundreds of times after being posted online. Joshua's mother Kath Kuru also showed her heartfelt thanks to all those who helped rescue him.
