26、 Smiling can infect everyone and light up our day. Well, it was at the market at 5 pm — the worst time of day to shop. I had to pick up a few essentials after work: cream for coffee, eggs for breakfast and Advil for my headache.
I’d been rushing all day doing jobs for people. I did not want to be shopping, to say the least. But I told myself it was my last stop before going home to put my feet up.
So I scored (得到) a parking place, grabbed a bag from the trunk and found a shopping cart.
The market wasn’t as crowded as I had expected. I grabbed a package of linguini (意粉) and some pesto.
That’s when I saw her. She was sitting in a shopping cart. She looked to be maybe 9 months old. Short blond curls, blue eyes. A white lace dress and shiny black shoes.
I couldn’t take my eyes off her. Then I did what I always do with children: I gave her my best smile. I may have looked a bit mad, but it came from my heart.
That is a habit I formed long ago when I became a mother. It started with my first child, in that unforgettable, life-changing moment.
At times my smile would fade to a look of fear or worry, but it never left my face for long. It always came back, even through tears.
I’ve learned that everyone needs a smile sometimes, young and old, friends and strangers, even strangers at the market in a rush to get home.
She took her time deciding just what to make of my smile. But finally, she lit up.
I laughed and waved goodbye. And she blew me a kiss.
That put a smile on my face and I got a smile in return from every shopper I passed.
I was still smiling when I got home and realized I’d forgotten to get Advil. Luckily, I didn’t need it. My headache was gone.
Somehow, in that simple exchange of smiles, this weary (使人厌烦的) old world became a better place. Want to change the world? Try smiling. Someone will smile back at you. I guarantee it.
If you’re lucky, maybe they’ll even blow you a kiss and make your headache go away.

27、It's no secret that inhaling(吸入)smoke is bad for your lungs. But now, scientists are suggesting smoke may also carry and spread infectious diseases. The theory, published in Science Magazine, is based on the research that found wildfire smoke is full of thousands of species of microorganisms(微生物).Some of these microorganisms, including bacteria and fungal spores(真菌抱子).are known to cause disease.
The new research suggests that when a wildfire burns plants or animal matter and disturbs soils, it exposes thousands of species of bacteria and fungi that otherwise might not easily become airborne. You might think the high heat from fire would kill these organisms, but one study mentioned in the article found that some bacteria even multiply after fires. Scientists say the organisms stick with smoke particulates(颗粒物), allowing them to travel thousands of miles across continents.
Dr. Peter Chen, director of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, is interested in the theory but somewhat skeptical that the microorganisms in smoke would actually cause infections. Many bacteria and fungi don't cause lung infections, says Chen, but it's certainly possible that a significant number could worsen symptoms in someone with a preexisting lung condition. "I always thought it was the particulates in smoke that were causing these issues," says Chen. "But when I read this, I started thinking, could it be the microorganisms that are also worsening existing illnesses?"
Whether the microorganisms in smoke actually cause infections or simply worsen potential respiratory(呼吸的)issues, the article raises a new health threat that is "certainly alarming", says Kelsey Jack, an associate professor of environmental and development economics. This is especially true for lower-income populations, Jack says, because people with fewer protective means are often more exposed to the environment. If smoke is affecting the air quality in a certain area, the people who work outside, or who have to go to the office on foot or by bike will inhale more smoke than those who drive.
But until more research is done, Chen says the best thing people can do is just follow existing recommendations when air quality is poor-including staying indoors, keeping windows and doors closed, using HEPA filters and running air conditioning.
【1】What can we know about the microorganisms from Paragraph 2?
A.Some could reproduce after fires.
B.They could be killed by high heat.
C.They could possibly travel through air by themselves.
D.Some could copy the smoke particulates.
【2】How do most microorganisms affect people according to Dr. Peter Chen?
A.They will cause lung infection.
B.They might worsen lung diseases.
C.They will destroy living environments.
D.They might damage respiratory systems.
【3】Why are lower-income people suffering more than others according to Kelsey Jack?
A.They live in poor areas.
B.They drive to and from work·
C.They have suffered from lung disease.
D.They are exposed to polluted air more frequently.
【4】What does Chen advise people to do in the last paragraph?
A.To wait for the results of more researches.
B.To ignore the air quality and to work out outdoors.
C.To follow previous suggestions on dealing with poor air quality.
D.To avoid using filters and air conditioning.

29、Here's a list of books I'm looking forward to this fall season. Not all of them will rise to the level of the advertisement, but it's an abundant crop.
"Home After Dark" by David Small (Liveright, Sept. 11 )
In 2009, Small published a celebrated graphic memoir (回忆录) called"Stitches". Now the Caldecott Medal winner is back with a graphic novel about a motherless 13-year-old boy brought up in an unhappy home in California. This is a tale told in few words and many striking images. On Sept. 11 at 3p.m., Small will be at Amazonbooks at Union Market. More information at www. amazon.com/graph-tale.
"Waiting for Eden" by Elliot Ackerman (Knopf, Sept. 25)
This brief novel is related by a dead soldier who is watching over a horribly burned partner in a Texas hospital. That sounds embarrassingly emotional, but Ackerman, who served in a Navy in Iraq and Afghanistan, is one of the best soldier-writers of his generation. More information at www. amazon. com/military-essay.
"All You Can Ever Know" by Nicole Chung (Catapult, Oct. 2)
Chung, the editor of the literary magazine Catapult, was adopted as a baby by a white family in Oregon. In this memoir, she writes about her childhood, her Asian American identity and her search for the Korean parents who gave her up. More information at www. amazon. com/politics-prose.
"Unsheltered" by Barbara Kingsolver (Harper, Oct. 16)
Alternating between past and present, this novel tells the story of a woman investigating a late-19th-century science teacher who was caught up in the controversy over Darwinism.
