二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Just how many truly intelligent species are there living on Earth? While they may not be living “in a pineapple under the sea”, a new study finds there’s at least one species in the ocean that shows the intelligence of human children. Researchers at the Marine Biological Laboratory say cuttlefish (墨鱼) have passed a test designed to measure the advanced skill of delayed gratification (延迟满足) in primates (灵长目动物).

Researchers used an adapted version of the Stanford marshmallow test (棉花糖测试), where children were given a choice of taking an immediate reward (1 marshmallow) or waiting to earn a delayed but better reward (2 marshmallows). “Cuttlefish in the present study were all able to wait for the better reward and tolerated delays for up to 50–130 seconds,” says lead author Alexandra Schnell. This is the first time the link between self-control and intelligence has appeared in a species other than primates.

Why the species is able to delay gratification is a bit of a mystery. For humans, scientists believe the quality strengthens social bonds. An example would be when you see someone wait for a partner to eat. Delayed gratification can also be a function of tool-building animals, who need to make hunting tools before they can eat.

For cuttlefish, however, researchers say they don’t build tools and are not social creatures. For them, Schnell believes delayed gratification is likely the result of having to hide themselves to stay alive. “Cuttlefish spend most of their time hiding,” she explains. “They desist from hiding when they search for food, so they are exposed to every hunter in the ocean that wants to eat them. We assume that delayed gratification may be a byproduct of this, so the cuttlefish can wait to choose better quality food.”

Researchers add that finding a link between self-control and intelligence in an animal other than primates is a good example of convergent evolution (趋同进化). This is the event in which completely separate evolutionary histories still lead to the same signs of intelligence.

【1】What can we conclude from the adapted marshmallow test about cuttlefish?

    A.They were smarter than children.

B.They had little interest in marshmallows.

    C.They showed a certain amount of self-control.

D.They were more likely to take immediate rewards.

【2】Why are humans able to delay gratification according to the scientists?

    A.To avoid dangers.

    B.To maintain relationships.

    C.Due to their inborn ability.

D.Due to the demand from others.

【3】What does the underlined part “desist from” in paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.Enjoy.

    B.Consider.

    C.Risk.

    D.Stop.

【4】What’s the possible reason for cuttlefish’s skill of delayed gratification?

    A.Cuttlefish is a tool-building animal.

    B.Cuttlefish is a social creature.

C.Cuttlefish has its special living habit.

    D.Cuttlefish has high intelligence.

【5】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A.A possible reason for the study findings.

    B.A suggestion for future studies.

    C.The significance of the study.

D.The major limitation of the study.

  • 27、   Sun bears usually live alone and are happy to spend most of their time by themselves when not looking for a mate. They spend their days in scarce of fruit, nuts, birds and insects in Southeast Asia's tropical forests.

Although sun bears mostly live alone, scientists recently discover they have developed a surprising social skill. They can make some facial expressions by mimicking other bears as a form of communication. Researchers studied 22 sun bears during natural social play at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center in Malaysia. Usually, this kind of skill is found in humans, gorillas(大猩猩), some monkeys and even pet dogs. But until now, only humans and gorillas show the ability to exactly copy complex faces. The study found that sun bears, however, are just as good at it as humans and gorillas. This surprised researchers; not only do sun bears usually live alone, they also are not closely related to humans.

Sun bears have a black coat and a white or golden color on their mid-section. They live in trees and eat both plants and animals. Sun bears are the smallest of the world's eight bear species, and can grow to be up to 1.4 meters in height and 65 kilograms in weight. Although they live alone in the wild, the bears in the study often played gently with each other. Sometimes they played with faster actions and behaviors such as hitting and hitting.

Decry Taylor is a doctoral student in psychology at the University of Portsmouth in England. He is one of the writers of the study, which was published in Scientific Reports. Taylor said, "It seems that some forms of communication are much more widely shared among mammals than we previously thought. Let remains uncertain what messages the bears were sending to one another." But the facial copying might be a signal that they are ready to move from gentle to rougher play, Taylor suggested.

1What does the underlined word "mimicking" in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Attacking. B.Copying.

    C.Teaching. D.Escaping.

2What made researches surprised after they conducted the study?

A.Sun bears are closely related to humans.

B.Gorillas live alone in the wild just like sun bears.

C.Gorillas have the ability to copy complex faces.

D.Sun bears are able to copy facial expressions.

3What can we know about sun bears from the passage?

A.They are the smallest mammals in the world.

B.They never communicate with each other.

C.They live in trees and feed on plants and animals.

D.They often hit and bite each other fiercely.

4Which of the following may Decry Taylor agree with?

A.Mammals' communication forms need to be further explored.

B.What messages sun bears send to each other is certain.

C.Sun bears send messages mainly by copying other bears.

D.Sun bears prefer to play roughly with each other.

  • 28、Put on new set of gasses for a new view

Today I visited San Francisco’s modern-art museum. I was there to see a new exhibit about spaceflight.1I like to “visit” this particular painting every time I go to the museum not only because it evokes(唤起)strong feelings, but because I always find something new.

There's real pleasure to be found in revisiting a museum replaying a game or rewatching a movie. Some of that enjoyment comes from the feeling of familiarity of course.2.There’s always plenty more to see, hear, taste, smell, feel, of understand the second or third time around. But how do you discover the exciting new thing in the familiar?

One way is approaching whatever task is at hand by searching for the things that you didn't see in the first time around. First, recognize that everything is always changing.3Second, remove judgment from the experience, if possible, and just observe what's new. For example, look for the ways in which a change in your neighborhood is interesting or exciting.

4That could mean removing sugar, coffee, a certain kind of media from your life for a specified time. Once the break is over, that same thing will have more of its former interest or excitement.5So is true that novelty is fun, but given enough of a break in between, repeated experiences regain that initial excitement.

A.Repeated experiences like this are valuable.

B.Visiting a new country brings fresh experience.

C.Coffee will never taste better if you quit it for a month.

D.But the piece of art that made me cry was a familiar one.

E.But it also comes from noticing new things in what is so familiar.

F.So the second experience is never exactly the same as the first one.

G.Another way is changing your routine and taking a break of some kind.

  • 29、   Dolphin or not a dolphin? That is the question! You see, there are several types of dolphins. Some are saltwater dolphins while others are river dolphins.

What are the 32 types of dolphins?"When people are asking the question, they are actually referring to the saltwater dolphins in oceans and seas. The river dolphins living in fresh water, are not included in these species. But what would be the answer in this case if we ask,"Dolphin or not a dolphin?"The answer would obviously be yes.River dolphins still belong to the dolphin family.

Among the 32 types of dolphins, some do not actually wear the word"dolphin”in their names, such as the tucuxi, while others actually have the word"whale"as part of their names even if they are not whales but in fact, belong to the dolphin family, for example, the melon-headed whale and the killer whale. So what would be the answer to the questiondolphin or not a dolphin?"in these cases? It would be yes.All these species do belong to the dolphin family.

Another question that people ask is,"Are the sea animals that perform at aquariums all dolphins?"So,it always seems to come back to the question,"Dolphin or not a dolphin?"

Well the answer is no in this case. The sea animals that perform there are not all dolphins. The beluga which people tend to think belong to the dolphin family because they show what seems like a smile, like most dolphins, are in fact a species of the whale family.

Now that you read these facts about dolphins, you probably realize that certain sea animals may appear to be part of the dolphin species and that others seem to be part of the whale family, but in either case,it is not obvious and can be surprising when you identify a sea animal as being a dolphin or not a dolphin. That is the question!

1What do we know about the majority of the dolphins?

A.They look like whales. B.They appear friendly.

C.They perform for audience. D.They live in fresh water.

2What could be added about dolphins before the last paragraph if you were the author?

    A.The living area. B.Dolphin training.

    C.The eating habits. D.Further identification.

3This article can be classified as_____.

    A.popular science B.literary fiction

Why Cold weather Causes So many Flight Cancellation?

Each year, about 60,000 flights get canceled because of bad winter weather, which costs airlines and airports an estimated $3 billion. But it’s not the freezing cold temperatures that cause problems for planes. After all, 1 jets fly 10 kilometers up, where temperatures hover around -50 degrees Celsius.

In fact, planes 2 in cold weather, since cold air is denser and leads to better thrust. Clearly, the real problem isn’t what’s going on up there. It’s what’s happening on the ground.

When a 3 polar vortex (极地涡旋) struck the Midwestern US in January 2019, temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius and airline canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. In these situations, when temperatures start 4, everything slows down. Cargo doors can freeze up, along with the nozzles that pump fuel into planes, which delays the 5 process.

Even the plane itself can freeze over. Just a quarter-inch - thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the way air flows over its wings.

Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 6.

That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 7, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.

And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 8. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. And even though crews can remove ice from the runway, scraping it off the pavement can lead to potholes (坑洞) and other 9, which makes takeoffs and landings more dangerous. And of course, snow and freezing rain on the ground can affect visibility to the point where officials have to decide it’s not safe to fly at all.

But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.

Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.

Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 10 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.

In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.

    THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

    In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d1 the causes which impel them to the separation.

We h2 these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created e3, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable R4, that among these are life, L5, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, g 6 are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the P 7 to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, l8 its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such f9, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

That night, after a couple of restless hours, Dora woke up suddenly at midnight. She went to her bathroom. Stepping on the carpet she noticed it was damp. Looking out, she found that muddy water was inching up the wood-paneled walls! She ran to her father’s bedside. “Daddy, Daddy,” she cried, shaking him violently. “Wake up. There’s water in the house!”

Barefoot and wearing only shorts, Dykstra walked to the entrance and opened the door. What he saw shook him wide-awake. Duchess, their dog, was standing just outside the door, her feet in six inches of water. That meant the roadway, their only means of escape, was flooded. He hid his anxiety. They climbed up the ladder-like stairs to a loft (阁楼) above the living room. From there they could hear the water filling the room below, creeping (缓慢地行进) toward them. Suddenly the whole house trembled as if struck by an earthquake. The next instant they found themselves floating, and the wooden house being swept along the river! Terrified that the cabin would sink and take them down with it, Dykstra decided that they would have to get out. Wrapping his arms tightly round his daughter, he plunged (猛冲) into the icy water.

The house was behind them now, chasing them through the darkness. Before he could get out of its path, the house – pushed by the tremendous (巨大的) power of the water – pinned him at the trunk. His ribs (肋骨) were crushed. His left leg was broken. He lost consciousness. Then the house shifted, releasing him. Dora found herself drifting downstream, her unconscious father beside her. “Don’t die, Daddy!” she cried. “Please!”

Perhaps it was the cry of the little girl that stirred Dykstra to consciousness. In the pale moonlight, Dykstra spotted an island formed by some rubbish that had got caught in some treetops. Fighting against the current and his pain, he swam toward it. Dora climbed onto the small pile of timbers (木材) and pulled her father, who was fighting for breath, from the rushing water onto the timbers. Now, Dora realized, it was up to her to help him.

Life is a series of choices and we can't always foresee the consequences.

Hary Saleem, an obese man with too much money and power, faced a choice. Outside his office waited his personal doctor, bringing him vital news about the only medicine that could save his life. On the other side of the world, one of his engineers waited for his decision on an important matter of business.

His secretary asked whether she could bring the doctor in. The billionaire businessman made his decision. “No, let the fool wait” shouted Saleem, angrily. “Business comes first.” Despite the health problem caused by his huge weight, he was still obsessed with making money. He raised a fat finger, and one of his staff hurried to switch on a large television set.

The screen flashed to life, and Saleem's engineer appeared. The man talked by satellite directly to his master although they were thousands of miles apart. “I's all ready to blow, Mr. Saleem,” he said. “Just say the word.”

His engineer was standing above Pakan Valley in South America. A few months ago, it had been a rainforest. Then Saleem's men had come, cutting down all the valuable plants and forcing the villagers to move out. Across the bottom of the valley, a dam had been built. This would provide power for the factories that Saleem planned to build in that area. The factories would bring him vast profits.

He saw no reason to delay. He ordered the engineer to press the button. And then a cloud of dust rose up, followed shortly by a dull explosion. A large river changed its course and water flooded into the doomed Pakan Valley.

“Good, that's that. Now, get that doctor in here,” he commanded. The doctor came in with a worried look and started to examine his wealthy patient. “You are doing very well, Mr. Saleem,” he said finally. “The new medicine is saving your life. The only difficulty is getting more of it.”
