  • 22、   Nowadays some companies are attempting to grow seafood from cells in a laboratory rather than harvesting it from the oceans.

With massive problems with overfishing worldwide and growing demand for shrinking supplies of seafood, the way fish currently makes its way to our plates isn't a long-term viable option. Between 1961 and 2016, the average annual increase in global food fish consumption outpaced population growth. Those are figures not sustainable for us, the fish or the environment as a whole.

Cellular seafood could be the answer. Just don't make the mistake of calling it lab-grown fish. 'None of us in the industry would call it lab-grown seafood, ' says Mike Selden, CEO of Finless Foods. 'Finless Foods isn’t lab-grown. We experiment and create our science in the lab, but don't produce there. Our products come from a production base much like a farm as a production base for animals.'

Finless Foods is a tech company in San Francisco. Beginning in 2017, it's been working to bring to market a species of cultured bluefin tuna (蓝鳍金枪鱼) created using cellular technology. Shortly after that, the company produced its first pound of bluefin tuna meat for a cost of about $19,000. Since then, however, it's been working to bring that price down.

Selden terms what Finless Foods is doing as 'cell-based seafood'. 'We're growing seafood from real seafood cells,' Selden explained. 'We take cells from a fish once, and then grow them endlessly from that. We do the same process that happens inside of a fish and make it happen outside of a fish. '

The goal of cellular seafood isn't to entirely destroy the current seafood industry. Instead, it's intended to augment it—and perhaps to help reduce some of the more harmful aspects of current fishing practices like overfishing and illegal fishing. And when it comes to certain sea species, this laboratory-based approach could help create a plentiful supply of certain fish without endangering the survival of certain overfished species as a whole.

1What is the main function of the second paragraph?

A.Warning us of the shrinking seafood supplies.

B.Stressing the significance of cellular seafood.

C.Analyzing the reasons for global overfishing.

D.Showing the environmental effect of seafood.

2What problem with cellular seafood is Finless Foods facing?

A.The high cost of its production. B.Its inadequate nutrient content.

C.Its potential harmful health effect. D.The complex production process.

3What does the underlined word 'augment' in the last paragraph most probably mean?

    A.replace B.strengthen C.cancel D.tolerate

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Is Seafood Made Out of Cells? B.Will Seafood Become Cheaper?

C.Have We Got Enough Seafood? D.Is Cellular Seafood Sustainable?

  • 23、   A new student group in the Highline district, south of Seattle, wants youth to have a say in hiring educators.

Jordyn Famimiko, a 17-years-old, is president of her school’s Black Student Union(BSU). She says it’s critically important to get a more diverse teaching staff. Eighty percent of students in the Highline district are youth of color. But people of color make up only 25 percent of the teaching staff. Across Washington, youth of color are about 47 percent of the student population, and people of color consist of 13 percent of teaching staff.

“I feel like students on every level need to feel safe, they need to feel valuable,” she said. “It’s not to say that minority students can’t connect with their white teachers, however, just right off the bat there is some disconnect there culturally.”

Mary Belay, 17, is entering her senior year at Mount Rainier High School in Des Moines and is an officer in her school’s Black Student Union. She helped contact BSUs at other schools to form the student association and initiate(发起)a districtwide discussion about their experiences as students of color.

The new student group met recently with Superintendent Susan Enfield. Highline does have a policy that calls for “hiring teams to reflect the diversity of our schools and community.” Mary said, to put that into practice, the district needs to include youth representation.

Highline district spokesperson Catherine Carbone Rogers said in an email that the district has included students on hiring teams for principals. The district is now considering ways to give students a role in the teacher hiring process, though it may be difficult to include students in interviews of candidates because those decisions often happen quickly and teachers of color are in high demand.

【1】What’s the function of the statistics in Paragraph 2?

A.To tell most students in Highline are of color.

B.To call on people of color to become teachers.

C.To show people of color can’t be teachers easily.

D.To indicate unbalanced rate of students and teachers of color.

【2】Why is it vital to get a teaching staff of different cultural background?

A.To have a say in hiring educators.

B.To connect with the white teachers.

    C.To initiate a districtwide discussion.

D.To ensure students’ sense of security.

【3】What can we know from the last paragraph?

A.Students decide which principals to employ.

B.Highline district employs youth on hiring teams.

C.The schools are in great need of teachers of color.

D.Students are given a role in interviewing candidates.

  • 24、O'Plerou Grebet is a 22-year-old graphic design student in Côte d'Ivoire, Africa. Everywhere he looks, he sees signs of Western influence — from the glass skyscrapers and malls lining the streets in his home city to the way his fellows speak and dress. “We are living like we’re Western people,” he says. That even applies to the keyboard culture — when his friends text using the messaging apps, they especially love to use the “tears of joy” face emoji (表情符号). So he used his design skills to create digital stickers that show what he thinks is missing: symbols of history, life and culture in Côte d'Ivoire and neighboring countries.

In 2018, he released a free pack of over 360 stickers in a mobile app called "Zouzoukwa”, which means "image" in the local Bété language. Available on Android and iOS, it now has over 120,000 downloads. It's more impressive than other emoji apps, with the feature of connecting to the realities of Africans using it. “ It would make their jokes even livelier,” says Grebet. The stickers include traditional masks, African instruments like the djembe drum and people dressed in a variety of prints and clothing that can reflect local tradition.

Some of his favorite designs are a series of facial expressions commonly used in his area, but not available as standardized emojis. There’s a woman with lips pursed, giving some serious side-eye—a sign you can use when your friend keeps you waiting long for no reason. It's common in Côte d'Ivoire and also translates across cultures, Grebet says.

The next step, Grebet says, is to try and get some of his designs into the official emoji set, where they’d reach more than 2 billion people worldwide, as usable ones on smartphones everywhere. Grebet also plans to keep traveling and expanding his experiences and his sticker pack. His designs so far are drawn from his experience and research into a few African countries.

【1】How does Grebet find their local culture according to paragraph 1?

A.It's very similar to Western culture.

B.It's absent in many aspects of their life.

C.It's full of inspirational ideas and symbols.

D.It's influential in local people's lifestyle.

【2】What's Zouzoukwa's advantage over other emoji apps?

A.It provides a better source of jokes.

B.It's designed based on daily items.

C.It's related more closely to the locals.

D.It applies to both Android and iOS.

【3】Which feeling does the woman emoji mentioned in paragraph 3 convey?

    A.Curiosity.

    B.Sorrow.

    C.Annoyance.

    D.Disappointment.

【4】What will Grebet probably do next?

A.Be on tour to advocate his designs.

    B.Create an official emoji set.

    C.Research into more African countries.

    D.Standardize some of his emojis.
