二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   We take showers and use the toilet every day to get rid of bodily waste. Our brains also need to take a bath every day. How can they do it?

A 2013 study found the answer. Researchers at the US University of Rochester studied the brains of mice and discovered that they cleaned themselves while the mice slept. A kind of fluid (液体) in the brain, called cerebral spinal fluid (CSF, 脑脊液), was found to increase dramatically (显著地) during sleep, washing away waste proteins that had been building up between brain cells in waking hours.

“This study shows that the brain has different functional states when asleep and when awake,” Maiken Nedergaard, the lead researcher, told NBC News. It also explains why we can’t seem to think clearly after a sleepless night while a good night’s sleep leaves us feeling sharp and refreshed.

Now a new study, published on Oct. 31 in Science, digs a little deeper into our brains’ self-cleaning procedure. Instead of mice, this time humans were the test subjects.

Researchers at Boston University, US, monitored the brainwaves of 13 healthy adults who were sleeping, using accelerated FMRI (核磁共振成像), which is capable of recording faster changes inside the brain than a regular FMRI machine. They found that every 20 seconds, blood flowed out of the brain, making room for a large amount of CSF to come in and “clean”. This cycle coincided with (....一致) the rhythm of the brain’s slow waves—an electrical activity that happens when we’re in a deep sleep.

It’s still unknown how these brain activities are connected. But the mere fact that they are connected is exciting enough, since it allows researchers to piece together (拼凑出) possible new explanations for misunderstood diseases.

For example, slow-wave sleep has been proven to play a role in strengthening our memories. This may explain why people with Alzheimer (阿尔茨海默病) often have fewer and weaker slow brainwaves. Based on this new study, there could be one more explanation for diseased brains: They are not clean.

Nedergaard, leader of the 2013 study, is also excited about the new findings. “Maybe the most important take-home message is that sleep is a serious thing,” she told Scientific American. “You really need to sleep to keep a healthy brain because it links electrical activities to a practical ‘housekeeping’ function.”

1What did the researchers find when they studied the brains of mice?

A.CSF in their brains decreased when the mice slept.

B.More waste proteins were produced in their brains during sleep.

C.CSF carried away waste proteins in their brains during sleep.

D.The more CSF was in their brains, the fewer proteins were there.

2What did the researchers discover when they monitored human brainwaves?

A.It took 20 seconds for CSF to clean brains.

B.Brains were “cleaned” when blood flowed out.

C.The rhythm of the brain was slower than that of CSF.

D.The brains worked more slowly when asleep.

3What are the last three paragraphs mainly about?

    A.The significance of the research.

    B.The features of slow-wave sleep.

C.The importance of having a good sleep.

D.The connections between these brain activities.

  • 27、   Pre-school teacher Rosa Ramirez has a special way of asking her students to line up for playtime outside. “Pueden pararse si llevan puesto algo de color amarillo, como una abeja,” she tells them. In English, Ramirez would say, “You can stand up if you are wearing yellow—like a bee.” But this is the half of the school day in which she teaches completely in Spanish.

Students are not confused by her language choice. Most of the four-year-olds wearing yellow stand up as instructed. The pre-school bilingual program at Gates Street Early Education Center in Lincoln Heights is part of a growing number of bilingual education models in California and across the country. Many of them are designed to serve students from Spanish-speaking families, as well as students from other cultures, under growing evidence that learning two languages can help people from all backgrounds become stronger students.

About 3.8 million students in U.S. schools are native Spanish speakers who are not good at English. They make up a large part of about five million students nationwide identified as English language learners. English language learners are the fastest-growing population in schools and the lowest-performing, as judged by achievement tests and graduation rates. Sixty-seven percent of students with limited English skills graduated from high school after four years in 2016, compared with 84% of all students.

Language experts recommend how to improve the situation: more high-quality, long-term bilingual programs can close the achievement gap between English learners and native English Speakers after five to six years, according to research.

The programs can be hard to put into practice. Problems include a debate over the best way to teach English learners, shortages of bilingual teachers, and even the fact that bilingual programs often grow fastest in areas where upper-income parents ask for them. That’s good for children who participate, but it worries people who want to see language-minority students have equal access.

“If we can make children feel more ready and more accepted, then we’ve gone a long way to making them ready to learn, ” says Tara Fortune, an expert in children education.

1How do the pre-school children react after hearing Rosa Ramirez's words?

A.They all stand up and try to catch bees.

B.Most children in yellow stand up as she asks.

C.They are all happy to wear new yellow clothes.

D.A large number of the children are confused.

2What is the purpose of bilingual education models in America?

A.To help students from other cultures study.

B.To help students learn as many languages as they can.

C.To make English popular among students abroad.

D.To make students from other backgrounds physically stronger.

3What is the situation of students who are native Spanish speakers, according to the passage?

A.They make up a small share of English language learners.

B.Sixteen percent of them fail to graduate every year on average.

C.They perform relatively poorly in studies.

D.84% of them can graduate with good scores.

4What is the bilingual program like?

A.It is not accepted by rich families from other cultures.

B.It is not a good thing if it lasts for the whole life of students.

C.It is common in schools with students from different backgrounds.

D.It is hard to introduce especially with language-minority students.

In Times of Crists, We Need Classical Music

It’s still lying in front of me on my desk. The booklet, entitled Time for Outrange(愤怒) , was written by the 93-year-old French diplomat(外交官) Stephane Hessel. “The power of money,” Hessel says, filled with anger, “has never been as great and selfish and 1 as it is now.”

But what does the outrage of this Frenchman have to do with classical music and , ultimately, with me, music director of the Orchestre Symphenique de Montreal(蒙特利尔交响乐团) ?

A lot, I, too, am outraged by the direction of industrial society, with materialism and consumerism leading the way. I want to show that, because of its powerful impact, classical music can play a(n) 2 role right now.

We all sense that our society is experiencing an almost revolutionary 3. Life is getting faster, competition is fiercer and social cohesion(凝聚力) is reducing. Like most people, I have no idea how liberty and civil rights would develop in the era of globalization and ever-evolving technological advancement.

But I see this as an opportunity for a(n) 4 to classical music. The great symphonies of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven are not museum pieces we should listen to only if we want to 5 ourselves with some music history. Now are they a decoration or a relaxation exercise for the quickened pace of life.

They are more than what a radio station for classical music once promised - “your oasis(绿洲) of well-being.” They are timeless compositions that 6 all the uncertainties and insecurities of this new period. They can support us in our search for meaning. Beethoven, for example, was convinced that man had the capacity to change for the better and to go throughout life. This is why there is so much hope in his music. His symphonies was mean to 7 people forward.

Classic music 8 our senses and emotions in such a way that we were thrown back onto ourselves. It 9 to listeners to make use of their own reason and reflect on their actions. Music’s sole purpose is to be experienced. That experience, in turn, is why music can change our perceptions(认知) of ourselves and thereby our interactions with others.

10 to explain this powerful impact of music will always remain unsatisfying, but this much is certain: aesthetic(审美的) experiences can transform people.
