二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   We all know that forests-especially rainforests-absorb carbon dioxide and produce the oxygen that all living things depend on. It’s no wonder that they have been named the lungs of the planet. Today, after the big fires in the Amazon, Alaska, Greenland, and even Siberia, it’s very clear that we need to grow a forest that is fireproof. That’s not an impossible dream. We can grow seaweed forests that are fireproof because they are underwater.

Seaweed can store carbon and help reduce the influence of global warming. Now, seaweed is being farmed in small ocean farms to be used for food, medicines, and beauty products. If seaweed can be grown on a large scale(大规模地), it could help to fight against global warming.

“Seaweed is finally having its moment in the spotlight,” said Halley Froehlich, a scientist at the University of California. She is the lead author of a new study published in Current Biology. The study shows that large-scale seaweed farming could be used to cancel out land-based carbon emissions and it mapped the areas of the oceans where seaweed could be grown.

Now, only 3.8 percent of the US waters off the coast of California are being used to grow seaweed but that is just 0.065 of the ocean that can be farmed. In fact, 48 square kilometers of the world’s oceans can be used for seaweed farming.

For seaweed farms to be part of the global solution, they will have to be much larger. To create underwater forests, seaweed would have to be grown, harvested and then sunk into the deep ocean so that the trapped carbon could be buried for years to come.

While it sounds like a good plan on paper, “The technology doesn’t yet exist” to keep seaweed in the deep ocean, said Froehlich. “Hopefully this paper encourages conversation among engineers and economists about what it would take for the actual tools to be put in place.”

1What makes people put forward the idea of growing seaweed forests?

    A.The burning of forests.

    B.Seaweed’s economic and medical value.

    C.Uncontrollable carbon dioxide emissions.

D.Their long-lasting dream of underwater exploration.

2Why can seaweed be used to fight against global warming?

    A.It doesn’t burn. B.It doesn’t pollute.

C.It can take in carbon. D.It can break down plastics.

3What does the underlined part “having its moment in the spotlight”in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.Breaking silence. B.Taking a bad turn.

C.Drawing people’s attention. D.Making room for other products.

4What does Frochlich say about the idea of growing seaweed forests in the last paragraph?

A.It has a long way to go. B.It has been put into practice.

C.It needs lots of money to carry out. D.It needs enough evidence to support.

  • 27、   When we wake up feeling sleepy, many of us often think, “I’m going to go to bed earlier tomorrow!” But however determined we are, chances are that we don’t keep our promise. This behavior is called “bedtime procrastination (拖延症)”, and results from lack of self-control and our body clock, reported HuffPost.

According to a study carried out by several health psychologists at Utrecht University, bedtime procrastination is a common problem. In their study, 53%of the 2.400 participants said they didn’t follow their sleep schedule, delaying (延迟) it at least twice a week.

It’s found that they delayed bedtime not because they liked to stay up late, but they couldn’t stop doing other trivial (琐碎的) things. “People who have trouble controlling their use of cell phones, handheld computers and other electronic devices are also more likely to delay going to bed,” Floor Kroese, a psychologist at Utrecht University, further explained to HuffPost.

Yet, according to scientists, lack of self-control is not the only thing to blame. Our body clock also plays an important role. It was also found that those who get up late are more likely to postpone their bedtime than those who wake early every morning. And more surprisingly, might owls would go to bed late at the very beginning of the weekday, even though they had to get up early for work and school. It’s their special body clock that plays a part in delaying their bedtime, reported Popular Science.

People always think that bedtime procrastination isn’t a big problem, but as Kroese explained, “the choices we make that affect our sleep could turn out to be pretty important for our health.”

1What did the study carried out by Utrecht University find?

A.Bedtime procrastination is not a very common problem.

B.53%of the participants delay their bedtime on weekends.

C.Most people go to bed late because they like to stay up.

D.Lack of self-control is one reason for bedtime procrastination.

2What does Kroese think of bedtime procrastination?

A.Cell phones don’t cause people to delay bedtime.

B.Electronic devices are not to blame for staying up.

C.It is not a big problem in our daily life.

D.It has a great influence on our health.

3What does the underlined word “postpone” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.set up. B.put off.

    C.keep to. D.turn down.

4Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.Bedtime procrastination. B.Self-control.

    C.Body clock. D.Bad behavior.

  • 28、Sharks use their good sense of smell to search for prey(猎物). But a new study shows that the rising levels of carbon dioxide in the ocean could reduce sharks' ability to find food. It's bad news for a healthy ocean. Sharks are top predators(掠食动物)and are like the ocean's weed controllers.

Dixson works at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. Her earlier work has shown that clown fish in acidifying(酸化的)water act strangely. "We want to expand this research to sharks .because we know how important it is for sharks to find their food through their sense of smell," said Dixson.

Her team started by placing sharks in each of three different pools for five days. Each pool had a different level of carbon dioxide in it. The first had the same amount as today's ocean water. The second had a level of carbon dioxide that scientists expect to reach by 2050. The third pool had the highest level of carbon dioxide that could develop by the year 2100.

Sharks weren't allowed to eat any food while in the pools. This made sure that they would be hungry. Then, Dixson released the sharks one at a time into a pool with two side-by-side streams of flowing water. In one stream, the researchers pumped water, in which a dead squid had been overnight. This water smelled strongly of the squid. The other stream contained ocean water with no scent(气味). Because each stream flowed at the same rate and in the same direction, the squid smell stayed in its stream. The sharks could choose to swim in either stream.

Sharks that had been swimming for five days in pools of regular ocean water spent more than 60 percent of their time in the squid-scented stream. The same was true for sharks that had been in water with the carbon dioxide level that could develop by the year 2050. But sharks exposed to the highest level of carbon dioxide spent just 15 percent of their time in the squid-scented stream.

1Why did the writer mention the sharks smell at the beginning of the passage?

    A. Because the writer appreciates their ability to find food.

    B. Because the writer considers them dangerous to human beings.

    C. Because the writer intends to show how to control weed in the ocean.

    D. Because the writer worries about the sharks in the ocean.

2What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A. What the ocean in the future will be like.

    B. Who helped Dixson conduct the study.

    C. What kinds of pools were used during the study.

    D. What the levels of carbon dioxide will be at in the ocean in the future.

3The researchers pumped water where a dead squid had been overnight to ______.

    A. help the sharks look for food

    B. test the sharks' sense of smell

    C. prove that sharks like eating squids

    D. explain why carbon dioxide in the ocean affects sharks

4What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph suggest?

    A. Sharks like the squid-scented stream better.

    B. Sharks like the stream with the high level of carbon dioxide.

    C. Sharks spent 15% of their time in the squid-scented stream.

    D. The high level of carbon dioxide can affect the sharks ability to smell.

To keep up their work, they must read letters, reports, trade publications, interoffice communications, not to mention newspapers and magazines: a never-ending flood of words. In _______ a job or advancing in one, the ability to read and comprehend _______ can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet the unfortunate fact is that most of us are _______ readers. Most of us develop poor reading _______ at an early age, and never get over them. The main deficiency _______ in the actual stuff of language itself—words. Taken individually, words have _______ meaning until they are strung together into phrases, sentences and paragraphs. _______, however, the untrained reader does not read groups of words. Another habit which ________ down the speed of reading is vocalization—sounding each word either orally or mentally as ________reads.

To overcome these bad habits, some reading clinics used a(n) ________called an accelerator, which moves a bar (or curtain) down the page at a predetermined speed. The bar is set at a slightly faster rate ________ the reader finds comfortable, in order to “stretch” him. The accelerator forces the reader to read fast, ________ word-by-word reading, regression and sub vocalization, practically impossible. At first ________ is sacrificed for speed. But when you learn to read ideas and concepts, you will not only read faster, ________ your comprehension will improve. Many people have found ________ reading skill drastically improved after some training. ________ —Charles Au, a business manager, for instance, his reading rate was a reasonably good 172 words a minute ________ the training, now it is an excellent 1,378 words a minute. THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

    In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d1 the causes which impel them to the separation.

We h2 these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created e3, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable R4, that among these are life, L5, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, g 6 are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the P 7 to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, l8 its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such f9, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

Expressions about water are almost as common as water itself. But many of the expressions using water have unpleasant meanings.

The expression “to be in hot water” is one of them. It is a very old expression, which can be 1 back to 500 years ago. The expression is used to mean being in trouble. One story says it got that meaning from the custom of throwing extremely hot water down on enemies attacking a castle.

Being in “deep water” is almost the same as being in “hot water”. When you are in deep water, you are in a difficult 2. Imagine a person who cannot swim being thrown in water over his head. You are in deep water when you are facing a problem that you do not have the ability to solve. The problem is too deep. You can be in deep water, for example, if you invest in stocks in complete 3 of the stock market.

"Water over the dam" is another expression about a past event. It is something that cannot be 4. The expression comes from the idea that water that has 5 a dam cannot be brought back again. When a friend is 6 by a mistake she has made, you might tell her to forget about it. You say it is water over the dam.

Another common expression, "to hold water," is about the strength or weakness of an idea or opinion that you may be arguing about. It probably comes from the way of testing the 7 of a container. If it can hold water, it is strong and has no holes in it. If your 8 can hold water, it is strong and does not have any holes. If it does not hold water, then it is weak and can not be 9.

"Throwing cold water" also is an expression that deals with an idea or 10. For example, you want to buy a new car because the old one has some problems. But you wife "throws cold water" on the idea, because she says a new car costs too much

  • 39、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

There is nothing unusual about a single language dying. Communities have come and gone throughout history, and with them their language. But what is happening today is extraordinary, judged by the early standards. According to the best estimates(估计), about half of the total 6,000 languages are going to die out in the next century. On average, there is a language dying out somewhere in the world every two weeks or so.

It is too late to do anything to help many languages, where the speakers are too few or too old, and where the community is too busy just trying to survive to care about their language. But many languages are not in such a serious position. Often, where languages are seriously endangered, there are things that can be done to give new life to them.

There are some famous cases showing what can be done — Welsh alone among the Celtic languages, is not only stopping its steady decline towards extinction(灭绝) but showing signs of real growth. Two Language Acts protect the status of Welsh, and its presence is increasingly in evidence wherever you travel in Wales. Maori in New Zealand has been maintained by a system of so-called "language nest", which provides children under five with a setting in which they are frequently exposed to the language. The hope is that the children will in turn become role models to a new generation of young children as they grow older. If good descriptions and materials are available, even extinct languages can be saved. Kaurna from South Australia, is an example. This language had been extinct for about a century, but had been quite well documented. So, when a strong movement grew for its revival(复活), it was possible to bring it back from death.

It is too soon to predict the future of these revived languages, but in some parts of the world they are attracting the very range of positive attitudes and grass roots support. In such unexpected but heart-warming ways we might see the grand total of languages slightly increased.
