One morning on my way to school, I had just seated myself on the bus when suddenly a few peasant-workers got on the bus with big bags, they rushed and shouted to seek the empty seats. One of them just sat next to me, putting his bag on the ground of the bus. The dirty bag touched my new white shoes. I stood up at once and kept me away from those peasant-workers and their big bags.
After class I told my unpleasant experience to my friends, they almost held the same feeling that even in the streets they would keep away from those peasant-workers and their big bags. Then some of us raised a question why they always carried big bags over their shoulders while a little amount of money could buy many cheap things that they needed.
What on earth were there in their big bags? We could only keep our curiosity but had no chance to see inside.
Then one day a chance came when I passed a building site with my friends after school, we saw a group of peasant -workers rushed out the half -finished building to a small bus, they all carried big bags as usual. Suddenly, an old peasant -worker fell on the ground. His bag flew off and hit the ground. The bag broke due to its weight and poor quality, and what were inside the bag separated everywhere. The sight drew the passengers’ attention at once especially ours. We gathered over to see the incident, regardless of the embarrass feeling of the old man.
The poor old man caught a big colorful sharpener(卷笔刀)the first time and sat on the ground, his legs were too weak to support his body because he had fallen down heavily, but he cleaned the sharpener carefully with his clothes, checking whether there was something wrong with it. It was clear that the beautiful sharpener was bought for his grandchild. We were a little moved and we couldn’t help picking up other things on the ground for the old man. A few clothes caught our eyes. They had been washed clean and folded neatly though they were a little old. We quickly gathered all his belongs and took them to the small bus with him.
On our way back, I suddenly imaged the scene when the old peasant-worker got home, his family rushed out to welcome him. Now it is clear what’s in the peasants’ big bags. They carry the worry, miss and warmth out but bring the great hope back.
【1】How did the writer feel when he stood up on the bus?
A. unhappy B. satisfied C. interested D. worried
【2】Why did the old man catch the sharpener first?
A. Because it was the most expensive. B. Because it was very close to him.

A. they had no time to buy things
B. they liked the things from their home
C. they wanted to save as much money as possible
D. the bags were big enough to carry all the things
【4】We can infer(推断)from the passage that the writer and his friends________.
A. had pity on the peasant-workers from the beginning
B. understood what the bags really meant to the peasant-workers
C. still looked down on the peasant-workers
D. gathered over in order to help the old man
22、How often do you hear people saying that the relationship between their parents and them is not as good as it used to be? Now let’s see what you can do to get along well with your parents.
As a teenager, you should respect your parents and what they did for you. If your parents don’t allow you to do something, do not go out of the way to do it. There must be a good reason why they feel you should not do that thing. Do not be angry about it or fight with them. Talk to them and explain to them your opinion. As you enter your mid-teens, you will realize you want to be independent. This change is going to bring conflicts (矛盾) between you and your parents. You will feel your parents control you too much. To avoid further conflict, talk to them, and follow them.
When you grow older and become an adult, you will be independent. That can put a distance (距离) between you and your parents. In this situation, listening to each other and understanding each other are necessary to build a healthy relationship between you and your parents. Since you are an adult, the parent child relationship develops into a relationship between adults. However, some things never change. You will always be their kid, no matter how old you are. So look on your parents as friends, rather than as your mom and dad.
【1】What should you do as a teenager?
A. Do whatever you want to do.
B. Respect your parents and their opinions.
C. Be angry with your parents sometimes.
D. Find a good reason to make your parents follow you.

【5】In which column (专栏) of a newspaper may you find the passage?

23、About ten years ago when I was an undergraduate in college in New York, I was working as a practice student at my university's Museum of Natural History. One day while I was working at the cash register in the gift shop, I saw an elderly couple come in with a little girl in a wheelchair.
As I looked closer at this girl, I saw that she was seated on her chair. I then realized she had no arms or legs, just a head, neck and the trunk of the human body. She was wearing a little white dress with the patterns of red roses and yellow dots.
As the couple wheeled her up to me I was looking down at the register. I turned my head toward the girl and gave her a wink(眨眼示意). As I took the money from her grandparents, I looked back at the girl, who was giving me the most beautiful, largest smile I have ever seen.
All of a sudden her handicap was gone and all I saw was this beautiful girl, whose smile just melted me and almost instantly gave me a completely new sense of what life is all about. I immediately felt full of hope and confidence. She took me, a poor, unhappy college student, into her world, a world of smiles, love and warmth.
That was ten years ago, but I still remember it clearly as if it happened just yesterday. I'm a successful business person now and whenever I get down and think about the troubles of the world, I think about that little girl and the remarkable lesson about life that she taught me.

24、Saturday, June 16th
In the morning, we went camping along a road in Green Natural Park. We were happy because it was a sunny day. We were expecting an enjoyable two-day holiday. On the way, we kept singing and making jokes.
However, in the afternoon, when we finished our lunch at one oˈclock, it was dark and windy. Soon, it rained heavily. Unluckily, none of us brought an umbrella. We ran about but we could find no place to stay.
Twenty minutes passed and it was still raining. There were hours to go before we reached the campsite(野营地). It was even worse that our small compass(指南针) showed that we went the wrong way. We had lost our way!
We had to make a quick decision as it was raining cats and dogs. Chris said we could set up a tent, so Mary and Tom helped to set up the tent. Chris and I tried to make a fire to keep us warm. But we were unable to light the fire, as everything was wet. We dried ourselves, talked and waited inside the tent. At about five o’clock, it stopped raining. We decided to give up the camping trip because all of us were very tired.
This camping trip may not be very successful but we know each other better. And the most important thing I’ve learned from this trip is the importance of team spirit.
