  • 26、Levi Strauss did not invent jeans, but he is considered the first person to make and sell great numbers of them. He was born in Bavaria, an area that is part of Germany. In 1847 he and his family moved to the United States.

Levi Strauss opened a small dry goods store, first in New York, then in San Francisco, California. Among the products he sold were jeans. These pants were especially useful for miners in California. They needed clothing made from a strong material. Jeans are usually made from a heavy cotton cloth called denim.

Levi Strauss partnered with a clothing maker named Jacob Davis. Davis had invented a process for making rivets (铆钉) for jeans. These little metal connectors helped hold the pieces of cloth together to make the jeans stronger.

In 1875, the government gave Strauss and Davis a patent (专利) for their invention. That meant no one else could legally copy it without their permission. In 1928 the Levi Strauss company registered (注册) the word “Levi’s” as a trademark for their product.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington has one of the oldest known pairs of Levi’s. Writer James Sullivan published a book called “Jeans: A Cultural History of an American Icon.” In the book, he says jeans show two American values, creativity and rebellion.

Cowboys wore jeans in the old Wild West. In the 1950s, people saw famous Hollywood actors like James Dean and Marlon Brando wearing jeans in movies.

Today jeans come in blue but also lots of other colors and in many styles and at all prices.

    D.protect miners from attacks.

【3】From the text, we can learn Levi’s _____.

    A.was registered in 1928.

    B.was given a patent.

C.was the oldest trademark of jeans.

    D.has ever appeared in movies.

【4】The text mainly talks about ____.

  • 27、There was once a boy called Mario who loved to have lots of friends at school. However, he wasn't sure whether or not his schoolmates were his real friends, so he asked his grandpa for help. The old man told him, “I just have what you exactly need, and it's in the attic (阁楼).Wait here a minute.” Grandpa left, soon returning as though carrying something in his hand, but Mario could see nothing there. “Take it. It's a very special chair. It's rather tricky to sit on because it's invisible (无形的),but if you take it to school and you try to sit on it. you'll be able to tell who your real friends are.” Grandpa said.

Mario was curious to know whether it was true or not, so he took the strange invisible chair and set off for school. At break time he asked everyone to form a circle, and he put himself in the middle, with his chair. “Nobody move! You're about to see something amazing.”

Then Mario tried to sit on the chair. But he missed and fell down onto his back. Everyone had a pretty good laugh. Mario wouldn't be beaten. He kept trying to sit on the magic chair, and kept falling to the ground…until, suddenly, he tried again and didn't fall. This time he sat, hovering(悬浮) in mid-air…

Looking around, Mario saw George, Lucas and Diana—three of his best friends, holding him up, so he wouldn't fall down. Meanwhile, many others he had thought of as friends had done nothing but make fun of him, enjoying his every fall.

Leaving with his three friends, he explained to them how his grandfather had so cleverly thought of a way to show him that true friends are those who care for us, and not just any acquaintance(熟人) who happens to be passing by. Even less would a friend be someone who takes joy in our misfortunes.

【1】Why did Mario turn to his grandpa for help?

    A.He couldn't make any friends.

B.He didn't get along with his schoolmates.

    C.He didn't like his school.

D.He couldn't find out who his true friends were.

【2】Why was Mario able to hover in the mid-air?

A.Because he managed to sit on the invisible chair finally.

B.Because his three friends held him up with their hands.

C.Because his classmates gave him a chair to sit on.

D.Because he could see the magic chair clearly.

【3】Who are real friends according to the text?

    A.Those who laugh with us.

B.Those who take joy in our misfortunes.

C.Those who care about us when we are in trouble.

D.Those who care for us when we are popular at school.

【4】How did Mario most probably feel in the end of the text?

    A.Happy.

    B.Unconcerned.

    C.Upset.

    D.Uncomfortable.

  • 28、Beautiful coral reefs (珊瑚礁) in Thai seas have been gradually worsening due to global warming that causes coral bleaching, in addition to certain human activities without proper control and environmental consciousness. Recently, researchers from Thai university Chulalongkorn have created 3D-printed coral reefs modeled on the nature of real corals called Innovareef to accelerate the recovery of the coral reef ecosystem.

Innovareef corals are coated with calcium and phosphate nutrients that corals need to thrive and consist of flat surfaces. The reefs’ holes serve as habitats and hiding places for many sea animals. Artificial reefs also make use of hydrodynamics technology to enhance their resistance to tidal forces and ensure that they stay in place. Finally, the pH (level of acidity) of the selected type of cement used for the reefs is close to that of seawater, and the design concept is that of Lego, easily assembled (组装) and disassembled blocks that are easy to transport and fix.

“The Innovareef is not too large. It’s light-weighted and can be carried by anyone thus saving transportation costs. You can simply put it at any desired location in the sea and then dive down to put all the units together to complete the Innovareef. Not even five minutes afterward, fish and several ocean creatures start to come in to survey and make it their new habitat, leading to biodiversity around the Innovareef. More importantly, the research data indicates that the settlement and growth rates of planula on the Innovareef are better than those on other artificial reefs,” said Associate Professor Dr. Nantarika Chansue at Chulalongkorn University.

Innovareef is the hope for the effective recovery of natural coral reefs. Now the team is focused on adding more details to the reefs to adapt to more species so that the new structures look more like natural reefs.

【1】What function is expected of the Innovareef?

A.To extend the life of corals.

B.To monitor the growth of corals.

C.To help restore natural coral reefs.

D.To protect coral reefs from human destruction.

【2】What do we know about the Innovareef from paragraph 2?

A.It is highly resistant to heat.

    B.It has low manufacturing costs.

C.It provides rich nutrients for fish.

D.It is portable and easy to assemble.

【3】What are Dr. Nantarika Chansue’s words mainly about?

    A.The advantages of the Innovareef.

    B.The inspiration for the Innovareef.

C.The methods of improving ocean habitats.

    D.The importance of protecting biodiversity.

【4】What do the researchers probably mean by saying “adding more details”?

A.Apply the Innovareef on a large scale.

B.Carry out more tests on more species.

C.Make a specific design of the Innovareef.

D.Conduct further research on natural coral reefs.

  • 29、A new study has found that a child’s reading speed can be improved by simply increasing the space between letters within a piece of text. The research, led by Dr Steven Stagg of Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), examined the benefits of letter spacing and coloured overlays (颜色标注) among children.

Two groups of children, dyslexic (有阅读障碍的) and non-dyslexic children, were asked to read four texts with either standard or extra-large letter spacing, both with and without a coloured overlay. They were instructed to read the text out loud while being recorded. The recording was used to measure the number of errors they made — specifically missed words, added words, wrong words, and pronunciation — as well as the participants’ reading time.

The study discovered that text with increased space between letters provided a benefit for both groups. On average, the dyslexia group showed a 13% rise in reading speed, while the group of non-dyslexic children showed a 5% rise. In addition to improving reading speed, it also resulted in a significant decline in the number of words missed by the children with dyslexia. However, the study found that coloured overlays had no significant impact on reading speed or the reduction of errors for either group.

Dr Stagg, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at ARU, said, “We believe extra-large letter spacing works by reducing what is known as the ‘crowding effect’ (拥挤效应), which can hamper the recognition of letters and reduce reading speed.”

“Our findings strongly suggest that teachers can be confident that all children would be helped by increased letter spacing in reading materials.” Dr Stagg added. While we found that coloured overlays provided little benefit, we suggest children should be encouraged to use overlays if they find these help their reading. Coloured overlays may not increase reading speeds, but they may extend reading stamina (持久力). Previous research suggests their benefits may not become apparent if reading time is less than 10 minutes and the short reading duration of the tests in our study may have put coloured overlays at a disadvantage (劣势).

【1】Which of the following best describes the research process in paragraph 2?

    A.Explain, group and report.

    B.Read, instruct and measure.

    C.Question, guess and prove.

    D.Classify, record and count.

【2】What can we learn about increased letter spacing from paragraph 3?

    A.It increases reading speed.

    B.It sharpens reading skills.

    C.It arouses reading interest.

    D.It enhances reading comprehension.

【3】What does the underlined word “hamper” in paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.Obtain.

    B.Prevent.

    C.Change.

    D.Involve.

【4】What can be inferred about coloured overlays from paragraph 5?

A.They might work better in short reading.

B.They might not be known by experts.

C.They might not have been evaluated fairly.

    D.They might have some advantages.

三、完形填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 30、   A recent survey in the United States showed that the average family spent more money on its pets than on its children. Although rather shocking, it should not _______ anyone who has seen the doggy parlors(客厅) where loved pets rest. It is possible that: Americans are unique in treating their little friends in this way, but the information we have suggests that the English, too, are _______ to their pets.

This can clearly be seen when we look at pet foods, which often contain more vitamins than human food or at least, are _______ less nutrition. They certainly cost much. Last year the British public spent two hundred million pounds on pet food alone, _______ veterinary(兽医的) bills or animal furniture. It is difficult not to feel _______ with this when considering what the same amount could do for victims of starvation and poverty, so it is _______ for me to get hot under collar when I read an old man left all his money to his dog instead of his children.

There are a variety of reasons why I find the popularity of British pets _______. They cause physical problems. An example of this is New York where they have great difficulty getting rid of the mess that dogs leave on the streets. Many people find this funny, but in a number of large cities it is a major problem. Animals can cause disease, too. It is the threat of rabies—a disease with no known cure—that has made the English government impose strict _______ on animals coming into the United Kingdom. When the Spanish government recently _______ a number of stray dogs as protection against the same threat, English tourists immediately wrote letters to the newspapers ________about 'mass murder'.

Another problem is the ________ of pet owners. Most little children want a dog or a cat, and they continually push their mothers and fathers until they get one. It is only when the "sweet little thing" has been brought home that the parents realize how much time and money must be spent on "Rover" or "Bonzo". Then they just ________ it. This brings me to my last point. Pets, which run free, are often not ________ at all. English farmers lose hundreds of sheep a year, killed by someone’s pet and you must have read of children being hurt by some pets of their own.

________, I would only suggest that we have got our ________ wrong and that something should be done about it. In my view, it’s time we stopped being sentimental about pets.
