二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Curiosity is what drives us to keep learning, keep trying, keep pushing forward. But how does one generate (产生) curiosity, in oneself or others? George Loewenstein, a professor of psychology at Carnegie Mellon University, offered an answer in the classic1994 paper, “The Psychology of Curiosity.”

Curiosity arises, Loewenstein wrote, “when attention becomes focused on a gap in one's knowledge. Such information gaps produce the feeling of deprivation (匮乏) labeled curiosity. The curious individual is motivated to obtain the missing information to reduce the feeling of deprivation.” Loewenstein's theory helps explain why curiosity is such a force: it's not only a mental state but also an emotion, a powerful feeling that drives us forward.

Scientist Daniel Willingham notes that teachers are often “so eager to get to the answer that we do not devote enough time to developing the question.” Yet it's the question that stimulates (刺激) curiosity; being told an answer stops curiosity before it can even get going.

In his 1994 paper, George Loewenstein noted that curiosity requires some basic knowledge. We're not curious about something we know absolutely nothing about. But as soon as we know even a little bit, our curiosity is aroused and we want to learn more. In fact, research shows that curiosity increases with knowledge: the more we know, the more we want to know. To get this process started, Loewenstein suggests, take steps with some interesting but incomplete information.

Language teachers have long used communication in exercises that open an information gap and then require learners to communicate with each other in order to fill it. For example, one student might be given a series of pictures for the beginning of the story, while the student's partner is given a series of pictures showing how that same story ends. Only by speaking with each other (in the foreign language they are learning, of course) can the students fill in each others' information gaps.

1When one notices a gap in his knowledge, he   .

    A.desires to fill it

    B.tends to be afraid

    C.might get tired and sad

D.will become focused on his learning

2What does Daniel Willingham imply in the article?

A.Answers are more important than questions.

B.Teachers should be eager to get to the answer.

C.Teachers know how to stimulate students’ curiosity.

D.Teachers are partly to blame for students’ hating school.

3According to George Loewenstein’s paper, curiosity about something occurs only when you   .

A.have read a lot of books B.know little about something

C.have some related information D.are given incomplete information

4What is the article mainly about?

    A.Why students hate school.

    B.Why curiosity is important.

    C.How to stimulate curiosity.

D.What makes people hungry for knowledge.

  • 27、Grassroots evening

We want you to show your families all the pathways in your area, so let's invite your local providers to attend an open evening at your school. Each will set up a small stall (摊位) in your playground or school field with a taster activity of the activities they offer. This evening will be an opportunity to get more of your children moving more often.

    After-school activities

Things are getting back to normal and the easing of the lockdown restrictions has seen our after-school clubs coming back online. We are now running 10 clubs a week and it's clear to see how much the children have missed it. We'll be back to have around 40 clubs a week and we're in conversation with schools across the region.

    Active days

Since September many of our partner schools have asked children to come in in PE kit on their PE days. It reduces the time spent getting changed and means the pupils can stay in their PE kits after all day, which gives schools a great opportunity to create "Active Days". PE lessons and Outdoor and Adventurous can be all in an action packed.

    Spiral PE

Our partner schools have access to tools which are there to help them maximise their impact. We suggest getting the most out of the PE Rewards section—award PE star of the Week and PE Class of the week certificates and run these as competitions throughout the school. The class which wins the PE Class of the week most often wins an active prize.

We're here to help, so please don't hesitate to get in touch to find out more.

【1】In which of the following can a student enjoy the most varied group activities?

    A.Grassroots evening.

    B.After-school activities.

    C.Active days.

    D.Spiral PE.

A.To advertise to seek for partner schools.

B.To encourage students to take exercises.

C.To analyze the importance of PE lessons.

  • 28、   Loneliness has been linked to depression(抑郁) and other health problems. Now, a study says it can also spread. A friend of a lonely person was fifty-two percent more likely to develop feelings of loneliness. And a friend of that friend was twenty-five percent more likely to do the same.

Earlier findings showed that happiness, obesity(肥胖) and the ability to stop smoking can also spread like infections within social groups. The findings all come from a major health study in the American town of Framingham, Massachusetts.

The study began in 1948 to investigate the causes of heart disease. Since then, more tests have been added, including measures of loneliness and depression.

The new findings involved more than five thousand people in the second generation of the Framingham Heart Study. The researchers examined friendship histories and reports of loneliness. The results established a pattern that spread as people reported fewer close friends.

For example, loneliness can affect relationships between next-door neighbors. The loneliness spreads as neighbors who were close friends now spend less time together. The study also found that loneliness spreads more easily among women than men.

The average person is said to experience feelings of loneliness about forty-eight days a year. The study found that having a lonely friend can add about seventeen days. But every additional friend can decrease loneliness by two and a half days.

Lonely people become less and less trusting of others. This makes it more and more difficult for them to make friends—and more likely that society will reject(排斥) them.

John Cacioppo at the University of Chicago led the study. He says it is important to recognize and deal with loneliness. He says people who have been pushed to the edges of society should receive help to repair their social networks.

1As an average person, if you make 2 more common friends, how many days a year might you suffer from loneliness?

    A. 48 days B. 43 days C. 65 days D. 17 days

2What can we infer from the passage about lonely people?

    A. They can overcome loneliness themselves

    B. They will decrease loneliness day by day.

    C. They need help to get back to normal social life

    D. They can help others to repair their social networks

3What's the best way to help lonely people according to this passage?

    A. Bring them together. B. Make friends with them.

    C. Help them stop smoking. D. Help them lose weight

4Which of the following would be the topic of the passage?

    A. Loneliness and social network B. Social Networks and friendship

    C. Loneliness and diet. D. Help A Lonely Person

  • 29、   A build-it-yourself solar still (蒸馏器) is one of the best ways to obtain drinking water in areas where the liquid is not readily available. Developed by two doctors in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it’s an excellent water collector. Unfortunately, you must carry the necessary equipment with you, since it’s all but impossible to find natural substitutes. The only components required, though, are a 5’5’ sheet of clear or slightly milky plastic, six feet of plastic tube, and a container — perhaps just a drinking cup — to catch the water. These pieces can be folded into a neat little pack and fastened on your belt.

To construct a working still, use a sharp stick or rock to dig a hole four feet across and three feet deep. Try to make the hole in a damp area to increase the water catcher’s productivity. Place your cup in the deepest part of the hole. Then lay the tube in place so that one end rests all the way in the cup and the rest of the line runs up — and out — the side of the hole.

Next, cover the hole with the plastic sheet, securing the edges of the plastic with dirt and weighting the sheet’s center down with a rock. The plastic should now form a cone (圆锥体) with 45-degree-angled sides. The low point of the sheet must be centered directly over, and no more than three inches above, the cup.

The solar still works by creating a greenhouse under the plastic. Ground water evaporates (蒸发) and collects on the sheet until small drops of water form, run down the material and fall off into the cup. When the container is full, you can suck the refreshment out through the tube, and won’t have to break down the still every time you need a drink.

1What do we know about the solar still equipment from the first paragraph?

    A. It’s expensive. B. It’s delicate.

    C. It’s complex. D. It’s portable.

2What does the underlined phrase “the water catcher” in paragraph 2 refer to?

    A. The tube. B. The hole.

    C. The still. D. The cup.

3What’s the last step of constructing a working solar still?

    A. Dig a hole of a certain size. B. Weight the sheet’s center down.

    C. Put the cup in place. D. Cover the hole with the plastic sheet.

4When a solar still works, drops of water come into the cup from ________.

    A. the plastic tube B. outside the hole

    C. the open air D. beneath the sheet

If8(have) a chance to say one thing to healthy children, it would be this: having a disability does not mean your life is not satisfying. So don't feel sorry for the disabled or make fun9them, and don't ignore them either. Just accept them for who they are, and give them encouragement to live10rich and full a life as you do.

  • 41、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要

Paperless office was first coined in 1975. Four decades later, we’re still chasing the paperless office dream. Take the financial industry for example—it is one of the slower industries to hug digital transformation. Many financial institutions today still send out trade conformations by mail. I can tell you from first-hand experience that going paperless is by no means impossible. The Centric Digital office is a paperless work environment where all the office operations go digital, which has amazed our business partners.

Actually companies need to stress the benefits of a digital culture for communications. Going paperless can save time and money. You could say goodbye to costly repairs, office supply orders, wasted employee time and so on. Besides, forbidding paper in the office forces information to be 100% digital, where you can make endless amounts of backups (备份), which easily increase transparency(透明). Not to mention, top talents want to work for digital companies.

You might think the secret to a paperless company is purely technology. Well, not really. Thanks to products like iPads, smart-phones and cloud services, the ability to go paperless is highly accessible. Yet, even with all this technology, companies continue to rely on paper. It's not because they don’t have access to the technology, but because they’re lacking the politics, organizational structure and strong desire to change. In order to go paperless, companies need to change the way they think and operate. The decision needs to be made and cried out and everyone needs to work together to make it.

Yes, the paperless office has been a very long time in the making but it no longer has to be. With numerous amounts of software, services, apps and technology available today, the only thing we need to do is to make the decision to go paperless and see it through.
