  • 21、Born on May 27,1907 in Springdale,Pennsylvania, Rachel Carson became an avid explorer as well as reader, and took an interest in writing stories.By age 10, she had published her first story in St. Nicholas. She would often read this magazine, as well as many others that concerned the natural world. In 1925, she finished at the top of her class in high school in a class of 45 students.

Carson would go on to attend the Pennsylvania College for Women, which is known as Chatham University now. This is where she would end up pursuing the sciences,in this case biology. She would eventually attend Johns Hopkins University in 1929, continuing her studies in zoology and genetics.

Carson completed her Master' s in zoology in June of 1932, and went to work at a local radio station. Here she would write educational broadcasts for a weekly radio show called Romance Under the Waters. This led her to her job at the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries, and she became just the second woman to be employed by the bureau.

In 1951, Carson had her book The Sea Around Us published, which explains the complexity of the ocean to non-scientists. Carson wrote the book with poetry and science, and she intended to spark in her readers a sense of the fragility of the world' s ecosystem. The Sea Around Us made Carson the voice of public science in America, an internationally recognized authority on the oceans, and established her reputation as a nature writer of the first rank.

In 1962,Carson became well-known when her most famous book Silent Spring was published. This book described the negative effects of pesticides on the environment. Her concern with pesticides dated back to the 1940s,but no one would take her seriously until this book was finally published. On April 14th,1964,Carson passed away due to a heart attack but her work towards preserving the environment has continued to this day. • 22、   After the election day in the United States, there is a period of uncertainty. Both candidates could claim victory, and misinformation about the result would go viral. Anger, fake news and hate speech on social media could cause tensions. So what is Big Tech planning to do about it?

    Twitter

Twitter says after election day candidates will not be permitted to claim they have won the election before a declared result. And candidates can't tweet or retweet content that affects with the election process.

What will it do if that happens?

Twitter will direct people to resources with accurate, up-to-date information about the election status. It won't take down tweets. But these tweets will be labelled.

    Reddit

Reddit appears to go much further than Twitter. It says information that seeks to mislead or misrepresent the election results is not allowed and would be removed from the site.

Reddit also has an entire page committed to what happens after the election. The site will host a series of "Ask Me Anything" events from the day after the election. Voting experts will be on hand to answer questions about the vote, and what people can expect in the coming days.

    YouTube

YouTube says it will not allow "misleading claims about voting or content that encourages interference in the process".

It also says it will remove false content that aims to change the results of an election. That goes further than Twitter and Reddit. Users will face the biggest punishment. YouTube will shut down the account permanently that posts misleading information if necessary.

    TikTok

TikTok says it is working with independent fact checkers during the election period.

It says it will remove misinformation related to the 2020 election including the vote itself. It is also adding an election misinformation option to in-app reporting so that users can flag content.

In short, all these social media companies are treating the election, and its aftermath very seriously. We may know in a few days whether these measures are enough.

1What does Twitter do with the tweets?

A.It takes down tweets. B.It permits any tweets.

C.It removes misinformation. D.It guides people to reliable resources.

2What makes Reddit different from other Apps?

A.To encourage users to flag the content. B.To connect users with voting experts.

C.To remove misleading information. D.To be working with independent fact checkers.

3Which of the following Apps will give the most serious punishment?

    A.Twitter B.Reddit C.YouTube D.TikTok

To the members of the city council of Albion,

As a lifelong person living in Albion I have seen many changes to our beautiful town. Fifty years ago, the population was 32,000 and Main Street was the center of everything. People went there to shop, eat in restaurants, see movies, and sometimes just walk around. Today, Albion’s population is over 80,000 and nobody even thinks about going downtown. We shop at malls and on the Internet. We take out fast food and stay home and watch TV. Most of the downtown businesses have closed, putting people out of work.

I advocate a suggestion to turn things around. Let’s declare the four block area to the north of Main Street a pedestrian-only zone. Once we do that, we can begin creating a lively street scene with open-air markets, sidewalk cafes, and street musicians or other performers. People may start making downtown their free-time destination. Parents can bring their children, and teenagers would be able to get together in a public setting.

The changes could also have economic benefits for the city. Art galleries, clothing stores, and other businesses might begin to change the abandoned stores into new businesses. As downtown street life becomes more exciting, Main Street could also begin to attract new people living there. Young people responding to the energizing atmosphere may move into the apartments above the stores. New apartments will be built, providing new housing as well as work for local people. All of this activity would help to bring back the city’s commercial tax base.

If you want confirmation that this kind of plan works, just look at Springfield’s results. When they instituted their pedestrian-only zone in 2003, the changes were great. Restaurants and hotels began to fill up and unemployment rates went down. The people of the town gained an exciting new neighborhood. I certainly hope you’ll give this idea your serious consideration.

    Yours truly,

    Mary Blakely

1What’s the change of the town in the past fifty years?

    A. The population has decreased.

    B. There have been fewer safe places.

    C. People have lost interest in downtown.

    D. The unemployment rate has been controlled.

2What idea does the author give in the letter?

    A. Raising the local commercial tax.

    B. Abandoning the pedestrian-only zone.

    C. Driving people away from downtown.

    D. Starting businesses in the downtown area.

3What’s the purpose of the letter?

    A. To provide advice to the government.

    B. To seek help with the problems of the city.

    C. To express dissatisfaction with the situation.

    D. To get public attention to the local economy.

  • 24、Amy Pankratz spent a few nights in the hospital with her daughter, Isabella, who caught a bad flu. “Lying in bed beside Isabella, I could hear the cries of children in pain, ”says Amy. “It completely broke my heart.

When Isabella was getting well and could leave her room, she wore her prized possession—a “superhero cape(短斗篷)”Amy had sewn to encourage her—and walked into the hallway. The pink cape was an instant hit with the other young patients, who were doing exercise around the nursing station. “Then, all the kids were taking turns wearing the cape, giggling, ”Amy says. “These were some of the same children I had heard crying the night before, and here they were playing and having fun—kids just being kids!

From that moment on, Amy began making Comfort Capes for little ones battling with serious illnesses. “I felt God presenting an opportunity, ”she says. “I hoped Comfort Capes can help these kids feel brave, to lift some of the fear away.

Since then, Amy has made and donated more than 5, 000 capes in the United States. Amy usually pays for materials herself, although she accepts donations.

The capes she makes for kids in treatment are different from those her own children have. Before Amy starts to sew she learns what image or character the little boy or girl connects with. I choose the pattern, color and theme specially for each child,” explains Amy.

When she is not sewing, Amy is raising awareness of childhood cancers and looking into ways to get Comfort Capes to more kids who need them, If a cape can help a child, even only for a moment, forget his illness, it’s worth the time spent sewing,” she says.

【1】What made Amy feel sad when she was staying with her daughter in the hospital?

    A. Her daughter’s serious illness.

    B. The cries of children in pain.

    C. The tiredness from sewing the cape.

    D. The illness of children in her daughter’s room.

【2】What purpose did Amy have when she began making Comfort Capes for sick children?

    A. To make them feel warm.

    B. To find friends for her daughter.

    C. To make them happy and fearless.

    D. To raise the awareness of children’s illness.

【3】According to the passage, we can get that the author’s attitude toward Amy’s behaviour is ________.

    A. indifferent   B. neutral

    C. negative D. supportive

【4】Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It had been some time since Jack had seen the old man. College, carrier, and life itself got in the way. In fact, Jack moved clear across the country in pursuit(追寻)of the dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life. Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was working on his future, and nothing could stop him.

Over the phone, his mother told him, “Mr. Belser died last night The funeral(葬礼)is Wednesday.” Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel(新闻短片)as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days.

    “Jack, did you hear me?”

“Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It’s been so long since I thought of him. I’m sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago,” Jack said.

“Well, he didn’t forget you. Every time I saw him he’d ask how you were doing. He’d reminisce(回忆)about the many days you spent over ‘his side of the fence’ as he put it,” Mom told him.

“I loved that old house he lived in,” Jack said.

“You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man’s influence in your life," she said.

“He’s the one who taught me carpentry. I wouldn’t be in this business if it weren’t for him. He spent a lot of time teaching me things that he thought were important Mom, I’ll be there for the funeral.” Jack said.

Busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown. Mr. Belser’s funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.

The night before he had to return home. Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time, which was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture... Jack stopped suddenly.

“What’s wrong, Jack?” his Mom asked.

“The box is gone,” he said.

    “What box?” Mom asked.

“There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he’d ever tell me was ‘the thing I value most’,” Jack said.

It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box. He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it.

“Now I’ll never know what was so valuable to him,” Jack said sadly.
