二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Hanukkah (光明节) is a Jewish festival. It is celebrated on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev (犹太教历), which is usually sometime in December. It is often called the festival of lights. The festival celebrates the time, over 2,000 years ago, when the Jewish people fought against an emperor who would not let them follow their own traditions and religion. When the Jewish people won back their temple in Jerusalem, they found there was only little holy oil to keep the sacred light burning for one day. However, to their surprise, this small amount of oil kept the light burning for eight days and nights until the people had time to make more oil.

At the center of the Hanukkah celebrations is a candlestick (called a Menorah) that holds nine candles. On the first night of Hanukkah the first candle is lit, and each day this candle is used to light another candle, until on the eighth day, the last day, all the candles are lit. During Hanukkah, people go to the synagogue (犹太教堂) to pray and to remember the miracle (奇迹) of the holy oil. Hanukkah is a time for family and friends to come together. People exchange gifts and greeting cards, and children go to parties. Parents often give their children money at Hanukkah. Potato cakes, called latkes, are a traditional Hanukkah food.

A.The war that they fought 2,000 years ago.

B.The God that they honored best.

C.The miracle of the holy oil that happened 2,000 years ago.

D.The church they built 2,000 years ago.

【4】The passage mainly tells us about ________.

A.the history of Hanukkah and how it is celebrated

    B.why Jewish people celebrate Hanukkah

C.why Jewish people protect their traditions

D.the miracle of the holy oil in the Jewish temple

  • 22、Many people think that hippos (河马) are cute and funny-looking. They are really fat and they have short, thick legs. They also have little round ears that wiggle (摆动) sometimes.

Hippos look funny, but you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Hippos are extremely violent and dangerous. In fact, they kill more people than any other animal in Africa. Think of how many dangerous animals that Africa has. It has got crocodiles, snakes, lions, elephants and many more. Hippos are more dangerous than all of them.

Hippos are naturally very dangerous animals, but there are some situations that make them even more dangerous than normal. They are very territorial. That means that they stay in one area which they consider to be their private area. If a person or animal enter a hippo’s area, the hippo will attack. Hippos also often attack when they are returning to the water. Hippos eat on land and return to water at dusk. If a hippo sees an animal when it’s returning to the water, it will become violent.

Hippos are so strong that they often kill crocodiles. There are two reasons that explain why hippos and crocodiles often fight. First of all, hippos and crocodiles live in the same areas. Since hippos are territorial, they don’t like having crocodiles nearby. Also, crocodiles often eat young hippos. For that reason, adult hippos frequently kill crocodiles.

Mother and daughter hippos have close relationships. However, hippos don’t have any other close relationship with each other. Hippos often live together in large groups, but scientists don’t know why. It’s hard to study the behaviour of male and female hippos, because males and females look the same.

Hippos are violent, but they are herbivores. A herbivore is an animal that eat only plants. An adult hippo eats about 50 kilograms of plants every day. Hippos are much more comfortable in the water, but they can run fast on land. Their top speed is about 19 kilometers per hour. That’s much faster than humans can run.

【1】What is the text mainly about?

A.The fight between hippos and crocodiles.

B.How to tell male hippos and female ones.

C.Africa’s most dangerous animal — hippos.

    D.Why hippos get violent.

【2】If an animal is territorial, what does that mean?

A.It is afraid of other animals.

B.It stays within a limited area.

C.It does not like to live in large groups.

D.It does not want other animals to enter its area.

【3】What can we learn from the text?

    A.Hippos swim faster than crocodiles.

B.It is hard to explain why hippos live in groups.

C.Male and female hippos look different.

    D.Violent animals usually eat plants.

【4】What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

    A.To inform.

    B.To entertain.

    C.To instruct.

    D.To persuade.

  • 23、There are some sounds most of us acknowledge are annoying — the chewing of chips, the low noise of air conditioning or a screaming baby. These noises, for many people, act as a mere inconvenience that can distract them from the task at hand. However, there are some amongst us who have a much more severe response to these noises. Has a noise ever made you feel so angry that you could explode with rage? If the answer is yes, you may be suffering from misophonia (恐音症).

The word “misophonia” literally means “a hatred of sound” and is sometimes called Selective Sound Sensitivity Syndrome. There are some experts who doubt the existence of the condition. However, for those who claim to suffer from it, the experience can be painful. Certain sounds could set off intense emotional or psychological responses that may seem over the top compared with a non-sufferer’s complaints.

The sound of people chewing their food could trigger sufferers’ anxiety, or make them feel panic. It may even activate their fight-or-flight response, making them want to run away. In extreme cases, that feeling of panic may result in intense anger and even end up expressing rage physically.

Sadly, there’s no known cure. But tinnitus retraining therapy, cognitive (认知的) behavioural therapy and counselling could help sufferers tolerate noises and manage the condition. According to James Cartreine, a clinical psychiatrist, the condition can lead to separation. Sufferers use coping strategies that include avoiding places with lots of noises, like restaurants, or moving away when they feel like raging against someone due to their breathing.

So, the next time you see someone fly into a rage because of a sound that is driving them crazy, it may be due to a difficult condition they are trying to manage, and not just because they hate a certain sound.

【1】What is the purpose of paragraph 1?

A.To lead in the topic of misophonia.

    B.To introduce different annoying sounds.

C.To show ways of preventing a severe disease.

D.To present the harm of noises to human health.

【2】Who is most likely to suffer from misophonia?

A.Jane who usually has lunch alone.

B.Nancy who often screams at her baby.

C.Peter who is always worried about his studies.

D.Henry who is annoyed at the sound of book pages turning.

【3】What does the underlined word “trigger” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Control.

    B.Cause.

    C.Predict.

    D.Relieve.

【4】What can be inferred about misophonia from the last two paragraphs?

    A.It happens mostly in restaurants.

B.Any sound around can drive sufferers crazy.

C.Staying away from noises is a potential solution.

D.It may greatly influence sufferers’ cognitive ability.

  • 24、China’s Scariest Outdoor Attractions

As the world’s most populous nation with the world’s second-biggest economy, China is finding new and increasingly adventurous ways to attract and entertain tourists.

    Fuxi Mountain, Henan

Guinness World Records receives 2,000 applications from China a year -- more than any other country. And the latest potential record-breaker is the 3,000-ton glass-and-steel skywalk at Fuxi Mountain in Henan province, central China. Visitors who dare walk on this U-shaped bridge can look straight through the glass to the valley floor about 360 meters below. The new bridge extends 30 meters beyond the cliff edge, trumping other U-shaped wonders such as Arizona’s Grand Canyon Skywalk over the epic US gorge.

    Shilinxia, Beijing

32.8 meters over the edge of a 396-meter valley, the Shilinxia Viewing Platform stretches a whole 11 meters farther than Grand Canyon Skywalk. It’s constructed with titanium alloy, the material used in airplanes and space shuttles, so it can apparently hold a maximum load of 150 tons and 2,000 people. It’s a hefty 1.5-hour hike from the valley floor to the platform. Or taking the cable car up is an option.

    East Taihang, Hebei

The glass walkway at the East Taihang Scenic Area in northern Hebei Province gained popularity last year when video emerged showing a terrified tour guide falling to his hands and knees as the glass apparently started cracking under his weight. Shattered glass fragments were placed underneath solid panels to make the walkway look and sound as though it’s cracking when trodden upon. While the unique walkway of Taihang Mountain is therefore safe to traverse, tourists were quick to point out that at 1,180 meters above sea level, it could still induce thrill.

1To arrive at the platform in Shilinxia, you can .

    A.walk B.take cars

    C.take cable cars D.both A and C

2Which of the following attractions is likely to break the world record?

    A.Grand Canyon Skywalk

    B.Walkway at East Taihang

    C.U-shaped bridge at Fuxi Mountain

    D.Viewing platform at Shilinxia

3What do we know about the tourist attractions mentioned in the passage?

A.Travelers won’t feel frightened since the glass walkway at Taihang isn’t cracking.

B.Both attractions at Fuxi Mountain and Shilinxia extend farther than Grand Canyon skywalk.

C.The viewing platform at Shilinxia can hold more than 2000 people.

D.The material used in airplanes is applied to the glass walkway at East Taihang.
