24、 “Keep calm and carry on” — You can see this message written on many T-shirts and other tourist souvenirs (纪念品) in London and the UK. It has become so famous that there are many versions (版本) of it: “keep calm and drink tea”; “keep calm and love dogs”; “keep calm and learn English”. As you can see, you can substitute (替换) the “carry on” part for anything you want, really!
But where does the original phrase come from? Well, it comes from World War Ⅱ. It was a message to calm people down and encourage them during the war when London was being attacked. The idea was to carry on with life as normal, as if there was no war.
Staying calm when you’re in trouble is known as a very British thing to do. British people are famous for keeping a “stiff upper lip”. This means your lips (嘴唇) don’t shake when you are excited or frightened: you stay calm and don’t show people how you are really feeling.
Are British people still like this today? Do they still keep a “stiff upper lip”? Modern Britain is very different from how it was 60 years ago and British people probably show their feelings more than they used to. But if “keep calm and carry on” is still so famous today, then it must be something that British people still think and care about, and something they are still famous for. So next time you are frightened or in danger, just keep calm and carry on!

27、 Agatha Christie is possibly the world’s most famous detective(侦探的) story writer. She wrote about 80 novels, and her sales (4 billion copies of her novels) was over those of William Shakespeare. However, behind her works was a shy woman whose life was often lonely and unhappy.
She was born in 1890 in Devon, the third child of Clarissa and Frederick Miller, and grew into a beautiful and sensitive(敏感的) girl. She didn’t go to school but was educated by her parents. Her father taught her maths through stories and games, and her mother encouraged her to write by her own stories. Unfortunately her father died in 1901 when she was 11, and both she and her mother were very sad.
When World War I came in 1914, she became a nurse in a hospital, which was very useful to her later work. Many of the murders(杀人犯) in her books were carried out by a clever use of medicine, showing how much she had learnt about them as a nurse.
She wrote her first detective novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, in 1916. And it was published in 1920. In this novel she introduced Hercule Poirot, the Belgian detective who appeared in many later novels. Her other main detective was Miss Marple, who was from Agatha’s grandmother and her circle of friends. Christie’s stories keep the reader guessing who the murderer is until the very end of the story.
In 1914, at the beginning of the war, she married Archibald Christie, but the marriage was unhappy. It didn’t last and they left each other in 1926. It was a very difficult time for her, as her much-loved mother had died earlier that year. Agatha suffered a lot and one night she drove her car and disappeared.
She went missing for eleven days and was finally found in a hotel in Harrogate, in the North of England. Agatha only wanted staying alone but the newspapers had given her a hard time over her driving the car and disappearing. She decided never to let them enter her private life again
She enjoyed a very happy second marriage to Max Mallowan who she met in Baghdad and married in 1930. Her detective skills were a help to him in his work in Syria and Iraq. By successfully staying out of the newspapers, she found happiness with her husband. Her best novels were written after 1930, and she continued writing until 1973. She died peacefully in 1976.

When Chinese people find out that someone comes from London, they often ask, "London is a foggy city, isn't it?" British people who visit China often say that London is not a foggy city at all! But if London is not foggy, do so many people in China think it is? In fact, London used to be a foggy city, it isn't any more.
In London lots of its pollution came factories, but a lot of it came from coal because people used it in their houses to keep warm during the winter. By the 1950s, London's air pollution had become so that the government decided to do something to clean up the air. A new rule was made. It said that was not allowed to burn coal in any British city. Just a few years the air became much cleaner.
Now many Chinese cities meet the same kind of with air pollution that London met forty or fifty years ago. However, this problem is more difficult for Chinese cities to . First, more of the pollution comes from big factories than from coal that people use in their houses. If these factories are suddenly closed, lots of people their jobs. Second, cleaner fuels(燃料) are quite expensive. However, the air in many cities is already slowly becoming cleaner, because the government and ordinary people are trying to make pollution less.
