二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、If you thought pilots dimmed(调暗)the lights before takeoff to give you some shuteye, think again. Believe it or not, the dim lighting could actually help save your life in case of a plane emergency.

The dimmed lights before taking off the runway and landing are a flight precaution used to help passengers’ eyes adjust quicker during an emergency escape. “Going from a brightly lit environment to one that’s completely dark would require some time for our eyes to focus and see the escape slide,” Alice Theriault, service director for Air Canada wrote in a press statement. “Since we need to have all the seconds on our side in the event of an emergency, dimming the lights is one of many steps we take to ensure the safety of our customers.”

The phenomenon that your eyes see those strange speckles (小斑点) as your sight adjusts to a dark place after being in a light place is called dark adaptation. It normally takes our eyes about 20 to 30 seconds to see best in a dark room. The brighter the lights, the longer it takes for our eyes to adjust, which is why dimming the plane lights could shorten your “dark adaptation” time since you haven’t been sitting under fluorescent bulbs (荧光灯) all flight.

Not only does dimming lights add valuable time to the escape process, but it reduces the tension on your eyes if you need to look outside, or see the emergency lighting along the passage. “It helps keep you in the right direction.” Patrick Smith, an airline pilot and author of Cockpit Confidential told The Telegraph. “It also makes it easier for flight attendants to assess any outside risks, such as fire or debris, that might affect an escape.” So next time a pilot dims the lights, just know it’s for your safety, even though it creates a gentle atmosphere for your takeoff into the sky.

1The lights are turned down before takeoff to help passengers_______.

    A. escape in time of emergency

    B. take a short break

    C. create a comfortable atmosphere

    D. enjoy themselves

2Which of the following is True according to Paragragh 2 and 3?

    A. Dimming lights is required when accidents happen.

    B. Our eyes need some time to adapt to the change of light.

    C. Speckles are caused by the use of dimmed lights.

    D. It is required for pilots to turn off lights during the flight.

3What is the function of shortening “dark adaptation” time?

    A. Slowing down the landing.

    B. Adjusting the plane lights.

    C. Keeping passengers calm.

    D. Helping the crew judge outside risks.

4What is the text mainly about?

    A. A tip to make air travel safer.

    B. An emergency event happening on a plane.

    C. An explanation of an airline safety measure.

    D. A warning message from the pilot.

  • 28、We talk a lot in the U.S. about success. Success is the dream and the end point. And not by coincidence the idea that hard work leads to personal success is as American as apple pie.

But the reality is that sometimes we fail. And sometimes things, through no fault of our own, don’t go our way. We’re faced with a life-changing diagnosis(诊断), the passing of a loved one or job loss. We don’t, as a society, have as much to say here.

I think uncertainty does us all harm. We’d feel better equipped to deal with uncertainty if we talked about it more. I had so fully bought into the belief that with enough effort, I could control what happened in my life. I actually caught myself thinking I could “work my way out” of my cancer. As it turns out, cancer doesn’t really care about one’s work.

We might also make wiser decisions--this isn’t just a feel-good exercise. For example, technology and medicine have progressed to the point that many patients are living longer than they would have even a decade ago. These are achievements worth celebrating. And yet I wonder if the focus on success is sometimes misguided here as well. If it is one reason why we tend to pursue expensive end-of-life treatments, they often accomplish little other than to make a patient’s final days painful and frightening. The fact is that, when asked, many patients would rather focus on living meaningfully in their final days.

My hope here is to make a case for thinking about meaning, in the same way we think about pursuing success. In that spirit, I’ve asked several people, each of whom has met misfortune, how they find meaning in their lives. The diversity in their responses reflects the fact that there are no right or wrong answers here. We each can find meaning in different things.

【1】What is the typical American idea?

    A.Success is the dream.

    B.Success lies in hard work.

C.Apple pie is the best food.

    D.Failure is always avoidable.

【2】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 probably refer to?

    A.Equipment.

    B.Culture.

    C.Uncertainty.

    D.Belief.

【3】In their final days many patients actually want to______.

    A.live as long as possible.

    B.live a more meaningful life.

    C.make great progress in medicine.

    D.get expensive end-of-life treatments.

【4】What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.The author thinks pursuing success is wrong.

B.We can benefit from some unlucky things.

C.We can find the same meaning in our life.

D.Personally there are different meanings in life

  • 29、   She turned up at the doorstep of my house in Cornwall. No way could I have sent her away. No way, not me anyway. Maybe someone had kicked her out of their car the night before. “We’re moving house.” “No space for her any more with the baby coming.” “We never really wanted her, but what could we have done? She was a present.” People find all sorts of excuses for abandoning an animal. And she was one of the most beautiful dogs I had ever seen.

I called her Goldie. If I had known what was going to happen, I would have given her a more creative name. She was so unsettled during those first few days. She hardly ate anything and had such an air of sadness about her. There was nothing I could do to make her happy, it seemed. Heaven knows what had happened to her at her previous owner’s. But eventually at the end of the first week she calmed down. Always by my side, whether we were out on one of our long walks or sitting by the fire.

That’s why it was such a shock when she pulled away from me one day when we were out for a walk. We were a long way from home, when she started barking and getting very restless. Eventually I couldn’t hold her any longer and she raced off down the road towards a farmhouse in the distance as fast as she could.

By the time I reached the farm I was very tired and upset with Goldie. But when I saw her licking the four puppies, I started to feel sympathy towards them. “We didn’t know what had happened to her,” said the woman at the door. “I took her for a walk one day soon after the puppies were born, and she just disappeared. She must have tried to come back to them and got lost,” added a boy from behind her.

I must admit I do miss Goldie, but I’ve got Nugget now, and she looks just like her mother. And I’ve learnt a good lesson: not to judge people.

1How did the author feel about Goldie when Goldie came to the house?

    A.Shocked. B.Annoyed. C.Sympathetic. D.Upset.

2Goldie rushed off to a farmhouse one day because she _______ .

A.saw her puppies B.heard familiar barkings

C.found her way to her old home D.wanted to leave the author

3Which could be the best title of the text?

    A.Goldie’s secret B.Goldie and me

C.My unforgettable pet D.A poor lost dog

For many years large supermarkets have been encouraging us to spend money by pumping the smell of freshly-baked bread into their stories. • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

    Goal!

Seconds later, the referee blew the whistle. Came over.

“We won!” Jordan shouted out, leaping into the air.

“Championship game, here we come!” said Tara, slapping hands with Devin. “Can't wait till Thursday.”

Devin grinned. Thursday would be huge-the big soccer game in the afternoon, and the school's autumn concert in the evening. Ms. Poltis had chosen Devin to sing brief solo (独唱).

“Great work,” Coach said as the team gathered. “Be here by 6: 30 on Thursday to warm up.”

“Six thirty?” Devin said. That didn't sound right.

“It's a night game,” Coach explained. “Under the lights.”

“Playing at night will be so cool,” Tara said. “Under the bright stadium lights.”

Devin's heart sank. The concert was at 7: 00. Same time as the game. He couldn't possibly do both.

Devin's teammates were super excited. They were on the edge of a title, and Devin was a big reason why. He led the league in scoring, and his soccer knowledge made him like a coach on the field. He couldn't let his team down by skipping the game.

That night, Devin lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. Finally, he turned on his light. He picked up a sheet of paper from his desk. After reading the words, he shut his eyes and sang them:

“No matter how hard the struggle, I will never let you down...”

The solo was only four lines in the middle of a song the entire choir(合唱团) would sing. Devin knew the words by heart, but the thought of singing alone made him shivers(颤抖). Sometimes he was nervous about taking part in sports, too, but that always went away as soon as a game started. He'd never sung a solo before. It was a relief to know he didn't have to now. The soccer game was perfect excuse. His team was perfect excuse. His team was counting on him.

    But so was Ms. Poltis.

Devin crawled back into bed. It was a long time before he fell asleep.

In the morning, Devin hardly ate any breakfast.

At school, he went straight to the music room.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

He felt sorry to tell Ms. Poltis that he'd miss the concert.
