26、 If you are invited to a wedding, baby shower or other celebrations, you will be expected to bring a gift. Unless you know the host very well, the gift should be modest in value, about $25 or so.
For a wedding , the bride will have "registered ( 登 记 )" at one or two local department stores, indicating the items she prefers. You can buy the couple a gift that isn’t listed , but most people buy something listed on the registry (记录簿). If you buy an item listed on the registry, be sure to tell the store that you are doing this, so that the couple doesn’t receive duplicate (重复的) gifts. For a baby shower, bring a gift appropriate for a new born baby.
If you wish to give a gift when you leave to return to your country, the best gift is something unique to your country. It does not need to be especially valuable or rare. Possibilities include a book about your country, an inexpensive piece of handicraft( 手工艺品)or art, or something else that reflects your culture. If the children collect coins and stamps, they would be very pleased with a set of your country’s coins or a selection of stamps from your country.
If you owe a debt of deep gratitude to an American host family, a common way of repaying it is to take the family to a form of entertainment, such as a baseball, basketball, or a good restaurant.
Gift giving is not as important in America as it is in other countries, so there is nothing wrong with not giving a gift. If you need help, talk to a salesperson at a department store. Tell them about the person who will be receiving the gift and the reason for the gift, and they will help you find something appropriate.

★Go to a Youtheater. Look for one in your area offering plays for child and family visitors.
Pre-show play shops are conducted by area artists and educators where kids can discover the secret about performing arts. Puppet( 木 偶 )making and stage make-up are just a couple of the special offerings you might find.
★Try hands-on science. Visit one of the many hands-on science museums around the country.

28、 Siblings refer to one's brothers and sisters. We're attached to siblings as adults far longer than we are as children. Our sibling relationships, in fact, are the longest-lasting family ties we have.
“Paul, my younger brother, and I, kind of annoyed each other when we were kids,” said Anna, an interviewee, “But as adults, we've always had each other's back, especially when dealing with our mother's health crisis. Paul is the first person I want to talk to when something worries me.”
There's probably a biological explanation for the close bond of the sibling relationship. Siblings share half their genes, which biologists say should be motivation enough for each other's devotion.
One thing that can weaken closeness in adulthood is a parent who played favorites in childhood; this sense of hatred can last a lifetime. The simple concept of parental favoritism was enough to shake their relationship.
“What Paul and I are pretty sure is our parents treated us the same when we were growing up. Yet we're very different people,” Anna said, “Paul is outgoing while I'm shy. Paul is an amateur pianist while I can't read music or carry a tune. In families with more than one child, every sibling seems to get a label in contrast to every other sibling.”
The very presence of siblings in the household can be an education. When a new baby is born, the older sibling gains social skills by interacting with the younger, and the younger gains cognitive (认知) skills by imitating the older. They learn from the friction between them, too, as they fight for their parents' attention, Mild conflict between brothers and sisters teaches them how to interact with friends and co-workers for the rest of their lives.
It's so sad when things between siblings fall apart, which happens when aging parents need care or die—old feelings of contradiction and jealousy erupt all over again. Many families get through their parents' illnesses just fine, establishing networks where the workload is divided pretty much equally. But about 40 percent of the time there is a single primary caregiver who feels like she is not getting any help from her brothers and sisters, which can lead to serious conflicts.
Throughout adulthood, the sibling relationship “is powerful and unchanged”, said Jane Mersky Leder, author of the new e-book The Sibling Connection. Whether we are close to our siblings or distant, she writes, they remain our brothers and sisters for better or for worse.
So remember the immortal (永恒的) words of folksinger Loudon Wainwright Ⅲ, in a song called Thanksgiving. “On this brilliant occasion, this special family dinner, if I argue with a loved one, please make me...”
【1】What can probably encourage hatred among siblings?
A.The aging of their Mom and Dad. B.The difference between their hobbies.
C.The conflict in their daily lives. D.The unequal treatment from their parents.
【2】The underlined word “friction” in Para. 6 is closest in meaning to ___________.
A.mild conflict B.close relationship C.active interaction D.cognitive imitation

29、Almost everyone has heard the expression “the calm before the storm.” It is usually used to describe a peaceful period just before a very stressful situation or a tense argument.
British sailors coined the phrase in the late 1600s; they noted that before certain storms the seas would seem to become still and the winds would drop.
Science has given us the reason. According to US website HowStuffWorks, a calm period occurs because many storms, tornadoes and hurricanes draw in all the warm and humid(湿热的) air from the surrounding area. As this air rises into the storm clouds, it cools and acts as “fuel for the storm, like petrol in a car”. Once the storm has taken all the energy it can from the air, it is pushed out from the top of the storm clouds and falls back down to ground level. As the air goes down, it becomes warm and dry. Warm and dry air is stable, so once it covers an area, it causes a calm period before the storm. This same process also causes the “eye of the storm” in hurricanes and tornadoes. In these conditions, the calm occurs in the center of the storm because of the strong rotating (旋转的) winds.
The Weather Network has a tip for working out how far away a storm is. First count how many seconds there are between a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder, roughly three seconds equal one kilometer. So, for example, if you count nine seconds, the storm is about three kilometers away. A good method is that if your count is below 30 seconds, you should seek shelter straight away.
However, due to the complexity of storm system, not all storms take place after calm. Given the right conditions, some storms announce themselves with heavy rain and fierce winds.
So, your best bet is to keep yourself updated with weather reports for any predictions regarding a coming storm in your area. That's the most reliable way to predict the next display(展示) of nature's temper (脾气).
【1】What is the function of Paragraph 3?
A.To describe how the eye of the storm comes into being.
