26、 Some dinosaurs grew slowly and steadily. Others experienced a growth spurt as they neared adulthood. A “growth spurt” is when something or someone grows very quickly. For example, children usually have a growth spurt between the ages of 12 and 18. The same appears to be true for some dinosaurs! To reach their findings, scientists cut through the fossilized bones of dinosaurs. They examined the yearly growth rings of the bones from 11 kinds of theropods collected from their legs. Theropods are a group of dinosaurs that mainly walked on two legs and include big meat-eating dinosaurs, like tyrannosaurus rex, commonly known as T. rex.
The research team looked at fossils from museums in the United States, Canada, China, and Argentina. They were able to cut into the fossilized bones of one of the world's most famous T. rexes, known as Sue. These bones showed that the T. rex and its relatives have a period of extreme growth during the years before adulthood. It also shows that they reached full adult size by around age 20. Sue is about 13 meters tall. She is believed to have lived to about 33 years. But not all the large theropods had more steady rates of growth over a longer period of time. The Argentinian dinosaur did not reach its full adult size until it reached about 40 years of age. It is believed to have lived to about age 50.
Big theropods share the same basic body design. They walked on two legs and had large skulls and strong jaws. And of course, they had threatening teeth.
The lead researcher on the study is Tom Cullen. He is a paleontologist with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and North Carolina State University. He said that before this study, “it was known that T. rex grew very quickly, but it was not clear if all theropod dinosaurs reached giant size in the same way, or if there were many ways they grew so big.”
【1】How did scientists know the dinosaurs’ ages?
A.By knowing the theropods’ height. B.By examining the conditions of the teeth.
C.By comparing the theropods’ bodies. D.By counting the growth rings of the bones.
【2】Which part of the bones do you think the scientists examined?
A.Fossilized legs. B.Fossilized teeth. C.Fossilized skulls. D.Fossilized jaws.
【3】Why did Tom Cullen lead the research?
A.To analyze why theropods grew very quickly.
B.To know the age of different theropods.
C.To know why theropods grew so big.
D.To prove the idea that theropods shared the same features.
【4】What does this passage mainly want to explore?
A.The reason why theropods dinosaurs had the same body design.
B.The Argentinian dinosaur was the longest-lived dinosaur.
C.Theropod dinosaurs had different rates of growth.
D.The way that some dinosaurs grew so big.

28、 Ten-year-old Laura and her mother, Lynn, were sitting in front of the family computer, checking out models and prices of bikes. “Let’s pick one out for Dad’s birthday,” Lynn suggested.
As Laura got to the home page of the Bike Rack, a video link to Project Mobility caught her eye. She watched it out of curiosity. The video told how Bike Rack co-owner Hal Honeyman had created an organization to provide specially engineered bikes for people with disabilities. It showed the happy faces of those who were riding them.
“I’m going to buy a bike for one of those kids,” Laura told her mother. Two days later, she showed Lynn a letter she had written asking for donations. “I think it’s amazing for a guy to make bikes for kids who can’t walk,” the letter said. “I saw how happy a boy was when he got one… I’m writing to ask for your help.”
Lynn was surprised by her daughter’s effort, but doubts quickly appeared. The cost of just one of those special bikes could be $4,000. “She could never raise the money,” Lynn thought. But Laura’s letter went out to 75 relatives and friends. Within three days, money began arriving. The girl finally raised more than $12,000.
Last Christmas Eve, Laura wore a Santa hat and delivered the bikes to three of the lucky kids: Ava, Jenny, and Rose. Ever since then she and Ava have ridden bikes together. “When I ride a bike, I like to go fast and feel the light wind,” Laura said. “So does Ava. She rides with her arms, not her feet, but she really flies.”
Laura is determined to keep her campaign going every holiday season. “I want kids to feel the wind on their faces,” she says.

29、Life Cycles
About 15 years ago, Andrew McLindon, whose favorite hobby is riding, was on his bike in Austin, Texas, when he thought about a friend’s son. The boy had never known the joy of biking because he suffered from the balance disturbances. When McLindon got home, he bought a three-wheel recumbent(可斜躺的)bike with a seat belt, perfect for a child with balance issues. Then the boy got the chance to seize the freedom coming with simply riding a bike and began interacting with friends. But there was more, as McLindon learned from his friend’s reaction after performing this small act of kindness. “I’ll never forget the smile on his face,” McLindon said.
The smile launched the McLindon Family Foundation. Funded by donations, the foundation finds disabled children who can benefit from owning adaptive bikes, and helps adapt each bike to the particular needs of the children.
When the foundation was just started, people thought a bike was not a pressing need for children with medical conditions. The feedback from the families, however, told the foundation that it was so much more. It strengthens muscles. It builds confidence. It is the joy and pride of owning a bike. And, most importantly, it’s inclusion. To the families and the children, the bike has changed their lives. Once children are fitted for their bikes and are able to ride around with families and friends, the real results come to light. The ability to move allows these children to truly become part of the group——that is priceless at any age.
Since the start of the foundation, they have helped to provide 450 bikes for happy children. These children and their families are not just one-time clients. They are involved. “I am part of the project because every day my family is blessed with the wonderful gift that is the fruit of this project. It is really incredible,” a mother said. “I could go on forever about all the things that this project has given back to me,” said McLindon. “It absolutely brings me the greatest happiness.”

When it comes to food coloring, why should we have to prove just exactly how and why the substance causes a negative effect on the people who consume it before we can 【1】 it ? If this were a necessary or meaningful food ingredient (材料) in any way, sure, that would be a reasonable standard. But food coloring has no nutritional value. Why are we 【2】 it?
Most likely because it helps companies sell products. Pretty food pays off because aesthetics (美学) in food does 【3】. We have relied on 【4】 cues (暗示) for thousands of years to help us determine what is edible, nutritious, and safe to eat. Man has adapted to appreciating natural colors, including a varity of green, red, pink, orange, yellow, and purple produce. Colors 【5】 that food is ripe (成熟的) or that it contains healthy compounds. Because of that 【6】 background, color is money for food manufacturers. Children are especially attracted to a variety of bright, vibrant colors and succumb to (屈从于) targeted marketing.
Food aesthetics can also affect how we look at taste. In one study, when subjects were given sugar water in different 【7】 of red, they reported that the deep red drinks tasted sweeter than the light red ones. We’ve been programmed to expected certain things from certain colors. Another study showed people had a harder time 【8】 drink flavors when the drinks did not have the expected colors. We expected what nature has taught us, and even though our food system has changed dramatically in the past several decades, our expectations have yet to 【9】 up. Food companies can instead use this knowledge to 【10】 us and make their processed products appear more delicious.
