21、An 8-year-old Nigerian, Tani Adewumis, whose family is homeless, won first place at the New York State chess championship without a single defeat at the beginning of 2019 and he says he is not done yet.
“I want to be the youngest grandmaster,” Tani told The New York Times. Tani placed first in the tournament for kindergarten through third grade — an outstanding win for anyone. “It’s unheard of for any kid, let alone one in a homeless shelter,” said Russell Makofsky, who is in charge of the chess program.
Tani hasn’t had an easy life. His family left northern Nigeria in 2017 fearing attacks on Christians, and moved to New York City over a year ago where the boy learned how to play chess at school. School chess coach Shawn Martinez saw Tani’s potential after observing him stand out in the game a few weeks after first learning it early last year. He reached out to Tani’s family about joining in the school’s chess program, and learned they were unable to pay costs associated with membership. Shawn decided to abandon Tani’s fees, which can easily reach thousands with travel and chess camp admissions.
Seven victories later, the elementary school boy is one of the top players in the country for his age group. “He works very hard at his game,” Martinez said, believing Tani could achieve master status in the next year or two. The world’s youngest grandmaster qualified at the age of 12.
As Tani’s story hits national headlines, more people want to help. Makofsky, who set up a GoFundMe for Tani, said the family has received offers for a car, legal services, jobs and even housing. “My hope is that he’ll be in a home tonight,” Makofsky said.

22、In a time when ivory poaching (偷猎) has gotten so bad that it threatens to wipe out several animal species, a young Dutch designer is creating “egalitarian (平等主义) jewelry^ made of our very own ivory—teeth.
Lucie Majerus got the idea for her “human ivory” collection after having her wisdom teeth removed. She kept them and soon realized they would make great material for a jewelry collection. “Why wouldn’t we value our own material instead of the precious material from other species? And what if we mine our own ivory and turn it into pearls?” she asks.
Her own teeth became a ring, but in order to create a whole collection, she needed more material, and since having more of her teeth removed wasn’t a very pleasant choice, she asked her dentist to save his patient’s unwanted teeth. Most people choose not to keep their pulled teeth, so they are usually donated to dentistry schools. Majerus also received the lost teeth of two of her teachers at Design Academy Eindhoven, so she had a nice supply of human ivory to experiment with.
To turn human teeth into attractive pieces of jewelry, Lucie Majerus first bleaches (漂白) them, and then uses a stone polishing machine to shape the teeth into various shapes.
Majerus displayed her human ivory jewelry collection at this year’s Dutch Design Week, and claims that people’s reaction was mostly positive. “Surprisingly, most people aren’t frightened at the sight of the jewelry, but really like the idea,” Majerus told Fast Co Design. “Some regret that they didn’t keep their tooth at the dentist and some, who will have teeth taken out soon, are now looking forward to it.”

23、 As I was growing up, my life revolved (围绕)around soccer. I played on the national youth soccer teams, traveled to Europe, and at age fifteen, spent time training with a professional team in England. I always knew I was going to be a professional soccer player.
I had a full soccer scholarship to a top Midwest university, but when I got to college, things began to change. I started to see everything I had missed along the way. My high school years had been filled with practices and games and I didn't get to do a lot of the other things my friends were doing. I got to college and wanted to be “normal”. I was feeling burned out, so I just walked away from soccer and my scholarship. But I felt bad because soccer was the only thing in my life in which I ever had a deep interest. After graduation I did a few jobs. I worked in the financial industry, and then for several tech companies. I was still distressed.
Looking back, I can see that these jobs weren't based on the values that were important to me : honesty, stability (稳定),and family. Then an old soccer coach of mine called and presented an offer — teaching soccer and other sports to little kids. I thought, Could this be it, my calling(职业)?" I've been teaching now for a couple of years and really love it. I'm working with kids, which I enjoy, and I'm playing soccer again only with shorter players.

24、I believe that one of the best ways to connect with people and build quality relationships is through making conversation. Although most people can hold a conversation, only a few are smooth when they talk. I have discovered five simple and effective ways to be a smooth talker. Here they are:
Talk slowly
Generally, good talkers don’t rush into a conversation. 【1】They act as if they have all the time in the world. This makes them come off as centered and collected. Model this way of talking and you will create the same effect.
Hold more eye contact
Most people keep eye contact about 2/3 of the time or less when they talk. 【2】 This will convey confidence and interest in interacting with them.
【3】
People with good conversation skills tend to notice the kind of things that the average person doesn’t notice, and to bring such details into the conversation. They may notice and point out an interesting ring on the other person’s hand, a certain foreign accent, or a certain voice tone they use when saying a name. Thus, such individuals impress people in a very elegant manner.
Express Your emotions
【4】 Express your feelings about those facts. Keep in mind that it is at the emotional level that people connect best.
Use the best words
The ability to talk smoothly has a lot to do with choosing the precise words to convey your precise feelings or thoughts. 【5】 It will help you develop a way with words and allow you to express yourself more easily.
Conversational skills don’t improve just like that. It takes time, practice and the ability to learn at a rapid rate from your own experiences.
A.Don’t just present the facts, you’re not a newspaper.
B.It’s a very good idea to hold eye contact just a bit more than that.
C.Notice the details.
D.It is important to improve conversational skills.
E.Offer interesting news.
F.They take their time when they reflect on something and when they say it out loud.
G.Develop your vocabulary and practice communicating as accurately as possible.
