24、 For 21 years, Georges Bwelle watched his ill father traveling to hospitals, which could not offer him all necessary help.
Jamef Bwelle suffered only a broken arm at first, but it finally developed into a hematoma. That would affect (影响) him for the rest of his life. Bwelle spent years taking his father to overcrowded (过于拥挤的) hospitals. It was not easy. They would leave home at 5 a.m. and ran to the hospital to be the first. There were a lot of patients. Some people could die because they were waiting.
The situation hasn’t changed much since Bwelle’s father died in 2002. In Cameroon, there is one doctor for every 5,000 people while in the United States there is one doctor for every 413 people. And even if they could see a doctor, many Cameroonians couldn’t afford it.
When he saw his father and so many of his countrymen suffer, Bwelle decided to do something about it. He became a doctor himself. And he started an organization, ASCOVIME. It travels into the countryside on weekends to provide free medical care. Since 2008, he and his group of volunteers have helped nearly 32,000 people.
Almost every Friday, his team jam into vans and travel to villages in need. In each trip they receive 500 people. Patients come on foot from 60 kilometers around the village for free treatment. The next morning, the team will do simple operations in a school house, town hall or home, and work into the early hours of Sunday morning.
On Sunday, the team heads back to the city, tired but proud of their work. They know that their help can make a world of difference to those they help.
For his devotion to his country and people, Georges Bwelle becomes one of the 2013 Heroes voted throughout the world.

25、 In American schools, there is something called Homecoming Day(校友返校日). Many high schools and colleges with a football team have a Homecoming game on that day. This can be the most important thing of the year except the graduation ceremony. Students plan for Homecoming Day many weeks in advance(预先).
Several days before Homecoming Day, students start to decorate the school. There are signs to wish luck to the team and many other signs to welcome all the graduates. Many people still come to Homecoming Day twenty or thirty years after their graduation.
The members of some school clubs build booths(摊位)and sell lemonade, apples and sandwiches. Some clubs help to welcome the visitors.
During the day, people like to look for teachers whom they still remember. They often see old friends and talk together about those happy years in school.
Everyone soon comes to watch the football game. When the game is half over, the band comes onto the field and plays school songs. Another important moment is when the Homecoming Queen or King appears. All the students vote a most popular student as Homecoming Queen or King. It is a great honor to be chosen.
Homecoming is a happy day, but it is not perfect unless the football team wins the game. However, if the team loses, the students still enjoy the Homecoming. Some stay at the school to dance, and others go to a party. For everyone it is a day worth remembering.

27、“There’s nothing to discuss,” barked my husband when told him that Rosie, our 17-year-old daughter, had asked whether she could go to Kavos, Greece, for a holiday with her friends. “Of course she can’t. She’s too young to travel without the presence of an adult. It’s completely out of the question.”
So how come found myself standing, two weeks later, at Gatwick Airport. Tearfully, I watched our eldest child disappear through the security checkpoint. In four hours’ time, she would be in Kavos. It’s 2, 500 kilometers away from England!
There comes a time when you have to let your baby go—for many parents, it’s around the age of 17. We know that there is likely to be something wilder than hanging around by the pool and building sandcastles, but the time has come to trust that they’ll look after themselves.
But still felt worried. Rosie tried to put my mind at rest. She said she and her friends would always look after one another and that it really, really was all going to be okay.
After we had waved our last goodbye at the airport, I looked back. She was, to my surprise, looking back at me, too. Teenagers want to cut free, but it’s a frightening business for them, too.
We made Rosie promise to text as soon as she had arrived in Kavos and at least once a day after that. Around 9 a. m. on the first morning, her first message came through. It was twelve hours since I had left her at Gatwick. And all I got was: “I’m here.”
I wish there were safer places than these so-called teen destinations. But like all the dangers that life can hold for them, at some stage, all you can do is warn them, warn them again, warn them once more, and then hope that some of your messages have gotten through.
My daughter got home safely. So did her friends. But Rosie is now talking about a similar journey next year. And my alarm bells have already started ringing.
