Islands that could disappear in your lifetime

Island vacations are dreams for many tourists, but climate change has lifted ocean temperatures, raised sea levels and worsened storm severity. As a result, some islands are threatened and could disappear in the coming decades.

    Federal States of Micronesia

    2019 Population: 112,640

The average rate of sea-level rise worldwide has been 3.1 mm per year since 1993. But the rate around Federated States of Micronesia is three times faster. The country is at risk of disappearing because of coastal flooding, erosion, and frequent storms.

    Tuvalu

    2019 Population: 11,508.

Tuvalu is a small chain of islands in the Pacific Ocean. For more than 25 years, its representatives have raised alarms that climate change could raise sea levels enough to flood the islands. Even if waters never get that high, Tuvalu could still become uninhabitable as rising sea levels have polluted the nation’s groundwater resources with salt.

    Marshall Islands

    2019 Population: 58413

Residents of Marshall Islands, a chain of volcanic islands and coral atolls in the central Pacific Ocean, have known for years that they have to either build new artificial islands to relocate or raise the existing ones.

    Shishmaref Alaska

    2019 Population: 617

In 2016, people living in Shishmaref, Alaska, located near the Bering Strait, voted to relocate before melting ice and land erosion would forced them to. Alaska had granted the city $8 million toward the move, but officials say it will cost $200 million.

1The sea level around Federal States of Micronesia is rising as much as ______ or so a year.

    A.1.1 mm B.3.1 mm C.6.6 mm D.9.3 mm

2Which island has been granted some funds to relocate by the state government?

  • 22、For many years, I was convinced that my suffering was due to my size. I believed that when the weight disappeared, it would take old wounds, hurts and rejections with it.

Many weight-conscious people also mistakenly believe that changing our bodies will fix everything. Perhaps our mistake is believing that being thin equals being loved, being special, and being cherished. We fantasize (幻想) about what it will be like when we reach the long-awaited goal .We work very hard to realize this dream. Then, at last, we find ourselves there.

But we often gain back what we have lost. Even so, we continue to believe that next time it will be different. Next time, we will keep it off. Next time, being thin will finally fulfill its promise of everlasting happiness, self-worth, and, of course, love.

It took me a long time to realize that there was something more for me to learn about beauty. Beauty standards vary with culture. In Samoa a woman is not considered attractive unless she weighs more than 200 pounds. More importantly, if it’s happiness that we want, why not put our energy there rather than on the size of our body? Why not look inside? Many of us strive hard to change our body, but in vain. We have to find a way to live comfortably inside our body and make friends with and cherish ourselves. When we change our attitudes towards ourselves, the whole world changes.

【1】The passage tries to stress the importance of ____________.

    A.body size

    B.different beauty standards

    C.culture difference

    D.attitudes towards life

【2】What does the word “everything” in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.The whole world

    B.All the problems.

    C.All the properties.

    D.The absolute truth.

【3】What can be inferred about the author?

    A.The author is a Samoan.

B.The author succeeded in losing weight.

C.The author probably got wounded in wars or accidents.

D.The author has been troubled by her/his weight.

【4】According to the author , what is the common view of those who have lost some weight first and gained it back later ?

A.They feel optimistic about future plans on weight control.

B.They are indifferent to the regained weight.

C.The feel angry about the regained weight.

D.They think they should give up their future plans on weight control.

  • 23、You Need to Start Strength Training Today

The aging process affects the human body in many ways. One thing that happens to all of us as we age is muscle loss. 【1】 But others say it can start as early as age 30. The Harvard Health Publishing website notes that after age 30, you begin to lose muscle faster during your lifetime.

Experts show that we do know this: Being inactive can speed up the process. Now, the good news! Lost muscle is not gone forever. It is never too late to start strength training. But what exactly is strength training? 【2】

Here are a few things to note about this kind of training.

No equipment strength training. You do not have to use special exercise equipment or go to a gym to do strength training. 【3】 Exercises that use body weight as resistance are usually safer for beginners. They can also be easier on the body, and you can do them anywhere. Push-ups, plank poses, jumping jacks, side jumps and deep knee bends are great exercises for making muscle stronger.

【4】 The experts also suggest a short practice before strength training. Cold muscle is more likely to be injured than warm muscle. Walking for five to ten minutes is enough to warm up your muscle. They say it can activate your muscle.

Food. 【5】 The body breaks down protein into amino acids, which it uses to build muscle. So, experts say eat a little healthy protein with each meal—foods such as chicken, salmon, beans and yogurt.

    A.Warm-up.

    B.A muscle check.

C.You can just use your own body weight to do it.

D.Some experts say muscle loss begins around age 50.

E.Do not forget that proper diets help you build muscle.

F.Let us talk about the health benefits of strength training.

G.Simply put, it is any activity that makes one’s muscle stronger.

  • 24、   Since the Sydney Story Factory opened in Redfern, my colleagues and I have taken over 8,000 young people aged 7 to 17.

Back in 2011, it seemed a risky decision to leave my job as a journalist to run the Sydney Story Factory. But later every time I see that light go on in a child’s eyes when he understands the power and joy of words, I know I made the right decision.

All our programs end in a publication. This might be an animation ( )recorded on a DVD, or a beautiful book, but either way, it’s something the students can take home and proudly show to their family. There is nothing like the smile that spreads across the face of  an eight-year-old when he holds that publication in his hands.

There’s one boy called John, I remember-whose mum almost dragged him through the door when we opened. He hated writing. But our teachers didn’t treat him as a kid who was bad at writing; they were curious to find out how he was going to finish his story and what would happen next. And very slowly John’s ideas came. When he threw one out, our teachers would say, “Yes. And?” Then he’d have another idea. At the end of that first course, he’d worked with a small group to produce a short animated film. Gradually, John came back himself. Nearly four years later he’s still coming.

John is a very different boy from the one who first walked through our door. He’s doing better at school, and he’s far more confident. When younger kids come into the Sydney Story Factory, he welcomes them and shows them around. We don’t claim credit for all of that, of course, but some part of it is because he has become something he never thought would be: a writer.

1How does the author feel about running the Sydney Story Factory?

    A.Instructive. B.Incredible.

    C.Worthwhile. D.Unreasonable.

2What can kids get after learning in the Sydney Story Factory?

A.Different DVDs. B.An invitation to write a book.

C.Their published works. D.Qualification for animation creation.

3Which of the following best describes John’s teachers?

A.Caring and humorous. B.Patient and encouraging.

C.Sociable and demanding. D.Serious and responsible.

4What can we infer about John?

A.He is careful with his words.

    B.He enjoys creating short films.

C.He has made great progress in writing.

D.He encourages others to write themselves.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

In 1995 I broke my left foot on a bike ride. Luckily, I could still drive, so I continued my life with crutches (拐杖). One Sunday I drove to a picnic in a forest preserve an hour from my home, in my comfortable, but uncertain, white car.

The picnic was great, with good food, good friends and good weather. Late in the afternoon I left the party and began my drive home. I took the scenic route through West Chicago, a small town about 25 miles west of Chicago proper. Everything closed down on Sunday there, so it was hard to find someone driving on the road.

As I started up a bridge my car started to move with a short sudden action. The problem was that my car's alternator (交流发电机) went wrong, resulting in the car's battery dying. I thought, not now, not here! Finally, the car died. I rolled backwards onto a safer place, and pulled the emergency brake (紧急制动). Of course it was starting to get dark. I had to go out to walk, but where would I go? And on crutches? How long before a car would come by, and would they be kind enough to stop help? It would be very expensive to get my car to the auto mechanic shop (汽车修理店) of my hometown. Could I go home safely?

Then I saw a house right there at the bottom of the bridge, with a family outside having a picnic with their friends! Some of them were looking in my direction; some women were clearing away the completed picnic meal. I had great trouble walking with crutches, so I got out, leaned on the car and waved one crutch over my head. Their response was immediate. Three people ran up to the car to see what I needed. I told them my story and they took action at once.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式作答。

To my great joy, the family owned an auto mechanic shop.
