24、 The term “multitasking” was firstly used to describe a computer’s ability to do several tasks at one time. For many people, multitasking has become a way of life and even a key to success. Although checking e-mails while talking on a phone and reading the newspaper may be second nature for some people, multitasking can sometimes make us less productive(富有成效的), rather than more. Studies show that too much multitasking may bring anxiety and memory loss.
In order to multitask, the brain uses an area known as the prefrontal cortex(前额叶脑皮层). A research from volunteers performing multiple tasks shows that as they move from task to task, this front part of the brain actually takes a moment of rest between tasks. You may have experienced a prefrontal cortex “moment of rest” yourself if you’ve ever dialed(拨电话) a phone number and suddenly forgotten who you dialed when the line is answered. What probably happened is that between the dialing and the answering, your mind moved to another thought or task, and then took that “moment” to come back. The research has also shown that for many volunteers, job efficiency(效率) drops while multitasking, compared to when they perform only one task at a time.
Multitasking is easy when at least one of the tasks requires little thought. Most people don’t find it difficult to eat and read the newspaper at the same time. However, when two or more attention-requiring tasks are tried at the same time, people sometimes make mistakes.
We often don’t remember things as well when we’re trying to manage several details at the same time. We may not notice new information coming in, so it never makes it into our memory. That is one of the main reasons we forget people’s names – even sometimes right after they have introduced themselves. Multitasking can also affect(影响) our relationships. If someone checks their e-mail while on the phone with a friend, they may appear absent-minded or disinterested. It can also cause that person to miss key information being passed on to them.

A.Multitasking helps people remember things better.
B.More mistakes are made when tasks require little thought.
C.People get low job efficiency while managing several details at the same time.
D.People forgetting who to dial need to have a good rest.
25、 When Randy Heiss went hiking behind his Patagonia, Ariz farm, the last thing he expected to find was a Christmas list from a little girl across the US-Mexico border( 边境). “I found this balloon on my morning walk near Patagonia on Sunday.
Attached(系上) to it was a piece of paper with the Christmas wishes from a little girl,” Heiss wrote on his Facebook page.
When he brought the list home to his wife, who speaks Spanish well, they discovered that the little girl had asked for toys, clothes, art supplies(美术用品) and many other gifts. That's when Heiss set out to make the little girl’s Christmas dreams come true. Heiss said he had tried to send Christmas letters to Santa Claus by balloon when he was a kid, but never received a reply.
Heiss sent a Facebook message on Wednesday to XENY, a radio station in Nogales, to see if it could help him find out the girl or her family. He later received a reply from the station, which was sure that the writer of the letter was an 8-year-old girl named Dayami. And the station wanted to set up a meeting between the two on Thursday. "It just changed my whole day, " Heiss told the ashington Post. " Instead of going back to my office in Bisbee, I went with my wife to Walmart."The couple bought almost everything on Dayami's list. 26、A boy called Mario had many friends, and he was proud of it. Whoever he met, he would like to show off how popular he was at school.
One day, his grandpa said to him, “Mario, I know that you don’t have as many friends as you think. Many of them are not true to you.”
Mario thought maybe his grandpa was right. However, he wasn’t sure how he could test whether his schoolmates were real friends or not, so he asked his grandpa. The old man answered, “I have just exactly what you need. It’s in my room. Wait a minute.” The old man left, soon returning as if carrying something in his hand, but Mario could see nothing there.
“Take it. It’s a very special chair. Because it’s invisible, it will be hard for you to sit on it. However, if you manage to sit on it, you can use the chair’s magic power to tell who your real friends are.”
Mario took the strange invisible chair to school. At break time he asked everyone to form a circle, and he put himself in the middle, with his chair.
“Nobody move. You’re about to see something amazing,” said Mario. Then he tried sitting on the chair. Unable to see it, he missed and fell to the ground. Everyone had a pretty good laugh. “Wait, wait,” said Mario, making another try. But again he missed the seat.
Mario didn’t give up. He kept trying to sit on the magic chair. Finally, he did it. This time he felt himself in mid-air.
Then he experienced the magic that his grandpa had been talking about. Looking around, Mario saw George, Lucas and Diana holding him up, so he wouldn’t fall.
