  • 21、   We all know that regular exercise is vitally important for both a healthy mind and body. Research has shown that just five minutes of exercise in a “green space” can help people to keep mentally healthy.

Let’s take a look at some ways to get close to nature and make them a part of your regular exercise routine.

    Get on your bike

Cycling is a cheap, easy and fun way to get some good exercise in the outdoors. Try leaving your car at home and cycling to work one day, if that’s possible. Or get the family together and go on a weekend bike ride. Check out the local cycle paths before you go, and plan a safe route. Make sure you take some healthy snacks with you to keep your energy levels up.

    Try some outdoor yoga

Practising yoga can be great for reducing anxiety and aiding relaxation, so why not take your yoga mat and try out some asanas (yoga postures) in the open air? Yoga is great for stretching tight muscles and increasing flexibility as well as improving mobility, control and breathing. Why not finish your practice with some quiet meditation to further calm the mind?

    Go running

Instead of spending hours on the treadmill(跑步机), grab a friend and go off for a jog around your local park, or some nature trails. If you are used to running on a treadmill, you may find it harder at first, so make sure you have some good, supportive running shoes. You could also find out where your nearest Parkrun is. They are open to everyone, free, and are safe and easy to take part in.

    Join a conservation(保护) group

Joining a conservation group is a great way of keeping fit while helping the world around you. Do some research into what’s going on in your local area and you could find yourself helping to plant trees, clear up rivers and so on. You never know it could lead to new friendships, as well as the knowledge that you are doing something productive for your local area!

【1】If you want to cycle with your family, you’d better __________.

    A.have a healthy body

    B.check the bikes carefully

    C.learn some survival skills

    D.make good preparations for it

【2】What’s the advantage of outdoor yoga according to the text?

    A.Getting closer to nature.

    B.Feeling relaxed or peaceful.

    C.Keeping active and energetic.

    D.Building up people’s bodies.

【3】What problem do some people have if they want to run around their local park?

A.It takes them some time to get used to it.

B.It needs some patience to continue.

C.It makes them lose interest in running.

D.It leads them to fall behind their friends.

  • 22、When I was a young postdoctoral researcher at Cambridge, I met a bearded professor at a fancy dinner. He asked me, “So young man, what do you do?” I told him I was working on the genetics (遗传学) of childhood obesity (肥胖症). “Ha! Do you know what your problem is?” he replied. “You give fat people an excuse.”

The professor’s reply threw me. I was about to push back, when it occurred to me that this view was shared by much of society. Obesity is seen as a problem of physics; people just need to eat less and move more. But although how we get to our body weight is reliant on physics, the real question is why? Why do some people love food, while for others it’s simply fuel? Besides powerful societal and cultural influences, there are equally powerful genetic factors that influence our eating, and hence our body weight.

Large population-based studies, such as UK Biobank, a survey of nearly half a million adults, have helped to reveal the genetic architecture underlying differences in body size. Butthe childhood obesity data do not exist. And that’s a problem, because we know that children with obesity probably will grow into adults with obesity. Thus, understanding the genetics and natural history of childhood obesity will play a key role in its treatment and prevention.

Luckily, there is hope. D-CYPHR, a genetics research programme, is open to every child. It aims to create a truly inclusive research sample and investigate a range of conditions, for which obesity is a major contributing factor. D-CYPHR is ambitious and will face challenges in creating a truly inclusive research sample. But if it does, it will circumvent many of the problems in adult health research by building inclusivity in from the beginning.

You can help pioneer new treatments for millions of people by helping unlock the power hiding in your DNA. Now, a nationwide movement for ages 0—15 is being held and all you need to do is spit (吐) in a tube and complete a short health and lifestyle questionnaire.

【1】What’s the tone carried in the professor’s reply?

    A.Dismissive.

    B.Sympathetic.

    C.Delighted.

    D.Admiring

【2】What is a limitation of the previous studies on obesity?

    A.Limited size of participants.

    B.Inaccurate sample analysis.

C.Lack of data on childhood obesity.

D.Failure to map adults’ genetic code.

【3】Which is closest in meaning to “circumvent” in paragraph 4?

    A.Discuss.

    B.Face.

    C.Avoid.

    D.Create.

【4】What does the author want to do in the last paragraph?

    A.To call for action.

    B.To draw a conclusion.

    C.To sum up the text.

    D.To criticize misconduct.

  • 23、People with bigger brains tend to score higher on standardized tests of intelligence, according to new study findings.

However, the study author Dr. Michael A.McDaniel of the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond emphasized that these findings represent a general trend, and people with small heads should not automatically believe they are less intelligent. For instance, Albert Einstein's brain was "not particularly large", McDaniel noted." There's some relationship between brain size and intelligence on the average, but there's plenty of room for exceptions," he said.

Interest in the relationship between brain size and intelligence grew in the1830s, when German anatomist(解剖学家) Frederich Tiedmann wrote that he believed there was "an unquestionable connection between the size of the brain and the mental energy displayed by the individual man". Since that statement, scientists have conducted numerous studies to determine if Tiedmann's assertion was correct. Most studies have looked into the link between head size and intelligence. More recently, however, researchers have published additional studies on brain size and intelligence, measured using MRI scan(核磁共振成像扫描).

For his study, McDaniel analyzed more than 20 studies that looked into the relationship between brain size and intelligence in a total of 1,530 people. The studies showed that on the average, people with larger brain volume tended to be more intelligent. The relationship between brain volume and intelligence was stronger in women than men, and in adults than in children. McDaniel notes in the journal Intelligence.

McDaniel is not sure why the relationship was stronger for adults and women. "Other research has shown that women, on the average, tend to have smaller brains than men, but score just as well—if not higher—in tests of intelligence," he said.

McDaniel insisted that the relationship between brain size and intelligence is not a "perfect" one. "One can certainly find lots of examples of smaller-sized people who are highly intelligent," he said, "But, on the average, the relationship holds."

1What does the text mainly talk about?

    A. MRI scans are applied to intelligence.

    B. On the average, a bigger brain means higher IQ.

    C. Dr McDaniel did well in his intelligence study.

    D. Scientists are interested in Tiedmann's idea.

2By mentioning Albert Einstein, the writer wants to show ________.

    A. Albert Einstein was intelligent

    B. the result of intelligence test was false

    C. being hard working is more important than intelligence

    D. brain size doesn't necessarily decide the level of intelligence

3After Frederich Tiedmann wrote his article, ________ .

    A. many scientists agreed with him

    B. numerous studies have failed to prove his idea

    C. MRI scan became popularly used

    D. lots of researchers were interested in the connections between head size and intelligence

  • 24、Like many children, young Lotte Reiniger was crazy about movies, which at the time were a completely new invention. She taught herself how to cut paper silhouettes (剪影), of people, animals, and objects. I could cut silhouettes almost as soon as I could manage to hold a pair of scissors,” Reiniger said. “I could paint, too, and read...But everybody was surprised at the scissor cuts”

At first, Reiniger wanted to be an actress, but her skill at making silhouettes drew the attention of the German film industry. Before 1927, films were silent. To help the audience understand the film, title cards with printed text appeared during the film between scenes. Reiniger helped create title cards for films, using her silhouettes. In 1918, she was asked to provide stop-motion animation (定格动面), in which objects are photographed (拍摄)in a series of slightly different positions and then replayed at high speed so that the objects appear to move on their own, for wooden rats (老鼠)in the movie The Pied Piper of Hamelin. It was a breakthrough that led to her own films, first short films and then, in 1926, The Adventures of Prince Achmed, the first full-length animated film.

Although Reiniger once described herself as “a primitive (原始的)caveman artist”, her work is not simple. She carefully cut bits of card, paper, and wire, creating wonderful shapes, and then made them move and dance by hand. The black shapes were then placed on colorful backgrounds. She made more than 60 films, around 40 of which survive, all cut by her own hands. Most were based on timeless fairy tales, like Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty.

Reiniger was truly a pioneer both in animation and for women in film-making. Though her last film came out in 1980, her style is still influential and can often be seen in today’s films.

【1】What do we know about Reiniger’s cuts?

    A.People silhouettes were her favorite.

B.Painting and reading helped her cuts.

C.She had a gift for cutting silhouettes.

D.Movies excited her interest in silhouettes.

【2】What did Reiniger do to help the audience understand the silent films?

A.She replayed the film between scenes.

B.She cut silhouettes for title cards in films.

C.She broke up long films into shorter ones.

D.She made photos of the objects in the film.

【3】What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Creating title cards for films.

B.Making wooden rats for a film.

C.Producing The Adventures of Prince Achmed.

    D.Bringing stop-motion animation into a film.

    A.Gifted and generous.

    B.Creative and productive.

    C.Honest and self-confident.

    D.Traditional and hard-working.

One hot afternoon, my brother Mat, a skateboarder, and I were out in front of my grandparents’ house. Mat was determined (下决心) to jump on his skateboard over a chair that he had placed in the street. I was watching him try again and again. He treated this sport, skateboarding, an important and popular sport in my country, with great love and determination. Anytime he fell down, he got right back up and tried it again.

That hot afternoon,I could see him sweating. I was worried that he’d get heatstroke (中暑). I had heard grown-ups talk about people dying of heatstroke, and I kind of understood what it was. I really didn’t want my brother to get it.

So sitting on the porch (门廊) of my grandparents’ house, I was thinking of ways to keep him cool. Just then, Mat called me, “Hey Betty, could you get me my iced tea?” I replied to his request with a nod and stood up to go get the tea. I quickly went inside the house and headed through the hallway toward Grandma’s kitchen. My grandma was making toast. When walking toward her, I heard the most shocking sound I had ever heard in my short life.

“What was that?” Grandma asked. “Did Mat scream?” As I ran through the house toward the front door, I had one thing on my mind heatstroke. When I saw Mat, my image of Mat, my big brother and protector, was destroyed. He lay still on the ground. My grandma came up, told me to go and wait inside for her. Later, neighbors took my brother to the hospital. It turned out that the heatstroke had caused him to fall and break his bones.

I didn’t get to see Mat for at least a month. Finally, I could get to see my brother together with my family. In the hospital, I found bandages around his legs. Weeks later, on the day of his leaving the hospital, the doctors said Mat probably wouldn’t walk again for the rest of his life.
