  • 27、Laptop computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.

Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to “peak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees—anywhere at all!

Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher-education officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too.

At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, “Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we’re giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything.”

【1】The main purpose of the laptop program is to give each student a laptop to ________.

    A.use for their schoolwork

    B.access the Internet

    C.work at home

    D.connect them to libraries

【2】Which of the following is true about Westlake College?

    A.All teachers use computers.

    B.1500 students have laptops.

C.It is an old college in America.

    D.Students there can do everything.

【3】A window on the world in the last paragraph means that students can ________.

    A.attend lectures on information technology

    B.travel around the world

C.get information from around the world

    D.have free laptops

【4】What can we infer from the passage?

    A.The program is successful.

    B.The program is not workable.

    C.The program is too expensive.

D.We don’t know the result of the program yet.

  • 28、   When a storm is coming, most people leave the area as quickly as possible and head for safety. But there are a few people who will get into cars and go straight for the center of the storm. These people are willing to risk being killed by floods or 100-kilometer-an-hour winds for the excitement of watching the storm close up.

“Storm chasing (追逐)” is becoming an increasingly popular hobby, especially in the Midwest of the United States, where there are frequent storms between March and July. A storm chaser begins the day by checking the Internet for the latest weather reports, and then drives up to 1,000 kilometers to where the storm will be and waits for it to develop.

Although anyone can do it, storm chasing is extremely dangerous. The power of a big storm can throw a cow into the air or destroy a whole house in seconds. Storm chasers are also often hurt in accidents caused by driving in a heavy rain. If you are a beginner, it is much safer to join a group for storm-chasing vacations during the storm seasons.

Even then, storm chasing is not all adventure and excitement. “Storm chasing is 95% driving,” says Daniel Lynch, who spends most of his summer storm-chasing. “Sometimes you can sit around for hours waiting for something to happen, and all you get is blue sky and a few light showers.”

However, for storm chasers, it is all worth it. “When you get close to a storm, it is the most exciting sight you will ever see in your life,” says Jasper Morley. “Every storm is an example of the power of nature. It is the greatest show on Earth.”

1For storm chasing, the first thing storm chasers do is to ____.

A.get quickly into their cars for safety

B.wait patiently for the storm to develop

C.head straight for the center of the storm

D.collect information about a coming storm

2Beginners of storm chasing are advised ____.

A.to do it in an organized way B.to spend much more time on it

C.not to get too close to a storm D.not to drive in a heavy rain

3By saying “it is all worth it” in the last paragraph, the author means that ___.

A.storm chasing costs a lot of money B.efforts in storm chasing are well paid

C.storm chasing is worth hours of waiting D.a storm presents the greatest show on Earth

4What can we learn from the text?

A.Storm chasing is only fit for young people.

B.Some storm chasers were killed during the storms.

C.Storm chasing is becoming popular around the world.

D.Sometimes storm chasers get nothing but disappointment.
