  • 21、2018 FIRST Robotics Competition Game—FIRST POWER UPSM

The adventure begins on January 6, 2018. Play for real! Combining the excitement of sport with the rigors(严酷)of science and technology. We call FIRST Robotics Competition the ultimate Sport for the Mind. High-school student participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have”.

    Team Basics

The really cool thing about FIRST Robotics Competition is that all skill levels are welcomed and needed, technical or non-technical. Read more about team basics, time frame, commitment, and skills required.

    Cost & Registration

What does it cost to participate? There are costs involved with forming a FIRST Robotics Competition team and they can vary from team to team and region to region depending on what level of participation the team chooses.

Here are some basic cost standards:

There are never any “per student” fees; all costs for individual team members are assumed by the team as a group.

The annual fees for team registration, a robot kit of parts, and event participation are $5,000—$6,000. Additional costs for travel, food, team shirts and other optional items will vary.

    Scholarships

A big advantage of participating in FIRST is gaining access to millions in college scholarships made available by colleges, universities, and corporations who support FIRST. This is exclusive financial help open only to FIRST team members, giving them a competitive leg up on other students seeking educational funds.

1What is really attractive about FIRST Robotics Competition?

    A. Competitors will ever have the hardest fun.

    B. Only high-level teams are welcomed.

    C. All skill levels are welcomed.

    D. It connects science with technology.

2How should the participants pay to attend FIRST Robotics Competition?

    A. All the participants should pay the same amount of money

    B. The fees depend on the participants team levels and regions.

    C. There are no additional fees besides the basic cost.

    D. The participants should pay no more than $5, 000.

3Who will get exclusive financial help?

    A. High school students.

    B. Students seeking educational funds.

    C. First team members.

    D. College students.

  • 22、   Public transport is declining in the rich world. To those who have to squeeze onto the number 25 bus in London, or the A train in New York, the change might not be noticeable. But public transport is becoming less busy in those places, and passenger numbers are flat or falling in almost every American city despite healthy growth in urban populations and employment.

Although transport agencies blame their unpopularity on things like roadworks and broken signals, it seems more likely that they are being outcompeted. App-based taxi services like Uber and Lyft are more comfortable and convenient than trains or buses. Cycling is nicer than it was, and rental bikes are more widely available. Cars are cheap to buy, thanks to cut-rate loans, and ever cheaper to run. Online shopping, home working and office-sharing mean more people can avoid travelling altogether.

The competition is only likely to grow. More than one laboratory is developing new transport technologies and applications. Silicon Valley invented Uber and, more recently, apps that let people rent electric scooters(滑板车) and then abandon them on the pavement. China created sharing-bicycles and battery-powered "e-bikes", both of which are spreading.

Transport agencies should accept the upstarts(新兴方式), and copy them. Cities tend either to ignore app-based services or to try to push them off the streets. That is understandable, given the rules-are-for-losers attitude of firms like Uber. But it is an error.

It is doubtful that most people make hard distinctions between public and private transport. They just want to get somewhere, and there is a cost in time, money and comfort. An ideal system would let them move across a city for a single payment, transferring from trains to taxis to bicycles as needed. Building a platform to allow that is hard, and requires much effort of traditional networks as well as technology firms. It is probably the secret to keeping cities moving.

1What is the change in public transport in big cities?

    A.It is becoming busier.

    B.It is getting less popular.

    C.There are fewer traffic delays.

    D.There is more new transport.

2In the author’s opinion, the reason for the decline of public transport is that ______.

A.there are roadworks and broken signals.

B.people are becoming healthier and employed.

C.cars and bikes are more and more available.

D.transport agencies are seemingly less competitive.

3How does the author develop his idea in Paragraph 3?

    A.By giving examples

    B.By providing research results

    C.By stating arguments

    D.By comparing different approaches

4According to the text, the key to keeping cities moving is ____________.

A.to develop an ideal system that satisfies everyone.

B.to provide people with more means of transportation.

C.to build a good platform that appeals to transport agencies.

D.to make traditional networks and technology firms cooperate.

  • 24、Scientist, conservation organizations and government trying to stop the trend of extinction (灭绝) often focus on protected areas such as national parks and wildlife preserves. But with as many as million species(物种) at risk, this plan of action may not be enough to conserve wildlife.

Slowing the mass extinction that now appears to be underway will require more creative means of coexisting alongside wild plants and animals. A new study indicates the effectiveness of some such approaches by examining some lands managed by indigenous groups.

“ We show really strongly that, from a biodiversity standpoint in terms of species richness, indigenous - managed lands are at least comparable to protected areas, ” says biologist Richard Schuster of Carleton University. And in some places, they are better than parks and preserves -even though indigenous communities may use their lands’ resources by hunting or searching for food.

Schuster and his team analyzed more than 15,000 areas in Australia, Brazil and Canada. They found that the total diversity of wildlife was highest on lands either managed or co - managed by indigenous groups, while randomly selected areas with no formal protection were the least bio-diverse. For threatened species in particular, indigenous lands scored slightly higher than protected lands on overall species richness in Brazil and Canada, as well as higher for threatened animals in Australia.

Each country has a different geography, climate and history. Yet remarkably, Schuster says, the best indicator for species diversity is whether a given area was managed by an indigenous community. He pointed out that practices such as sustainable(可持续的) hunting, fishing and searching, as well as burning, are more likely to occur in such areas. Don Hankins, an ecologist at California State University, agrees. “ there’ s probably going to be more of a connection to the land, ” he says, “ and a use of the land for the things that are there, compared to a national park. ”

“ It’ s really important to listen to the people who live on the land and have them drive the stewardship efforts going forward, ” Schuster says, adding that partnering with indigenous communities may enable the world’ s countries to better meet a wide range of conservation goals: “ We really need all the help we can get as a global community to prevent species extinction that we’ re facing right now. ”

【1】What does the underlined word “ indigenous” probably mean in Paragraph 2?

    A.Social.

    B.Native.

    C.Protected.

    D.Threatened.

【2】What did Richard Schuster find in his study?

A.National parks are even higher in species diversity.

B.Indigenous communities overhunted on their lands.

C.Some preserves almost have no formal protection.

D.Indigenous lands do better in keeping bio-diversity.

【3】Which of the following statements may Don Hankins agree with?

A.Species diversity depends on geographical positions.

B.Humans’ everyday activities are no longer sustainable.

C.Indigenous groups have a close bond with their lands.
