二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Thinking about holidaying alone, but a bit concerned about the pitfalls? You needn’t worry if you consider these tips first.

    Safety

Unless you positively invite danger—i.e. hanging around a remote park at 4 a.m. with headphones on—travelling alone isn’t actually that risky. The biggest danger is being taken for a ride. Literally, in the case of taxi drivers: always ask for an estimated fare before setting off. Otherwise, try to never look like a tourist. Ensure that someone else knows your journey and commit to regular contact with them.

    Plan

Being alone means you can’t use your friends’ phones when yours runs out of juice, or rely on them should you lose your wallet. Put emergency systems in place: write down key numbers (friends, hotels, embassies, emergency services), have change for phone boxes and always keep some back-up money in your bag.

    Making friends

This is another common and very valid worry when travelling alone: what if no one likes me? Acquiring new companions is always easier than feared, but still a scary subject. It helps to look approachable—smile at people, have open body language and lose the sunglasses. Read something interesting to start a conversation, or ask strangers a question.

More hands-on methods include visiting expatriate bars, joining tours or using apps designed to help people make friends, such as Meetup.

1What can you do to ensure your safety when travelling alone?

    A.Behave as a traveler. B.Catch a lift when available.

C.Wander in a distant park in the early morning. D.Make your travel known by someone close to you.

2What preparations should be made in case of emergency?

A.Calling the police B.Contacting your friends.

C.Asking strangers for help. D.Setting aside some money in your bag.

3Where is this text most probably from?

A.A travel website. B.A health newspaper.

    C.A project handbook. D.A friend-making brochure.

  • 22、Reading with a child is a hugely important developmental activity as it helps youngsters learn new words, broadens their knowledge and provides time to bond with loved ones. So scientists wanted to see if parents and children acted differently when they read books together using traditional media compared with electronic device (电子设备).

To find out, the researchers carried out a study on 37 pairs of parents and healthy children between two and three years old. They asked them to read from three different types of media: electronic books with sound effects or animation; a basic electronic book; and a print book.

Researchers found parents and children spoke more when interacting with a paper book rather than a story on an electronic tablet (平板电脑). What’s more, parents used richer language when using print books compared with tablets. But parents were less responsive and children were less engaged with their parents when reading e-books, Munzer said. Dr Tiffany Munzer, coauthor of the study, told Newsweek: “One of the most surprising aspects is that these findings held true even when parents and children read tablet books with few distracting factors, suggesting it might be the actual tablet device that’s contributing to less conversation between parents and children.”

So should parents give up tablets when reading with their children, or is some reading better than none, regardless of the device?

“That isn’t to say there is no benefit to electronic book reading compared with doing nothing, just less compared with print books. Print books are just better for improving rich language from parents and more conversation between parents and children.” Munzer said that parents always know their children best. “So they should feel free to adjust (调整) the reading experience to what they know their children are interested in, even comics and magazines count as reading.”

【1】How many types of media were tested in the research?

    A.Two.

    B.Three.

    C.Four.

    D.Five.

【2】Which can best explain the underlined words “distracting factors” in paragraph 3?

    A.Things that affect reading.

    B.People who help reading.

    C.Tools that attract kids.

    D.Contents that fit kids.

【3】What does Munzer think of kids’ electronic book reading?

A.Kids can do it at times.

B.There is no benefit at all.

C.It will replace the print book reading.

D.It should be with more conversations.

【4】What should parents do to keep their children’s interest in reading?

    A.Buy more e-books.

    B.Talk less when reading.

    C.Sign up for reading clubs.

    D.Make reading experience interesting.

  • 23、Geoffrey Holt was a “nobody” in the public eye. He worked in his eighties as a caretaker at a mobile home park in Hinsdale, New Hampshire.

Holt collected hundreds of model cars and train sets that filled his rooms. He also collected books about history, with Henry Ford and World War II among his favorite topics. Holt had an extensive record collection too, including Handel and Mozart. Very often, he’d find a quiet place and study financial publications.

After retiring, Holt did various jobs for others. Despite having taught driver’s education course to high schoolers, he’d given up driving a car. He opted for a bicycle instead and finally the mower(除草机). His mobile home in the park was mostly empty of furniture—no TV and no computer, either. The legs of the bed went through the floor.

But Holt did have two things. He had a big secret and an even bigger heart. He passed away in early 2023. In a move that surprised the tiny town of 4,200 people, he left all his worldly goods to the people of Hinsdale.

With his casual lifestyle, no one would have guessed that Holt had a wealth worth up to $3.8million! Holt, who earlier in life had worked as a production manager at a grain factory that closed down in nearby Brattleboro, Vermont, spent his money on communications, hoping to earn more out of it. In the end, it was doing better than he’d ever expected.

Holt grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts. His father, Lee Holt, was a professor who taught English and world literature in a college. His mother, Margaret Holt, was an artist. Holt went to boarding schools and attended the former Marlboro College in Vermont, where students had self-designed degree plans. He graduated in 1963 and earned a master’s degree from the college where his father taught in 1968.

Undoubtedly, Holt will be remembered forever.

【1】What can we learn about Holt?

A.He had a wide range of interests.

B.He had always longed to be a driver.

C.He possessed a mobile home park.

D.He was often out of job while young.

【2】How did Holt accumulate his wealth?

    A.By gaining his parents’ help.

B.By doing business in a field.

C.By setting up a grain factory.

    D.By working hard after retiring.

【3】What does the last but one paragraph focus on about Holt?

    A.His father’s education concept.

    B.His educational experiences.

    C.His parents’ love for him.

    D.His early work dreams.

    【4】Which best describes Holt?

    A.Simple but other-centered.

    B.Serious but straightforward.

    C.Daring and demanding.

    D.Easygoing and ambitious.

The kindly “Chinese Fortune Grandpa” wearing Han Chinese clothing and holding a fortune bag debuted (亮相) at the Imperial Ancestral Shrine in Beijing on the day after Christmas. The final image of the Chinese gift-giver was selected through a global design competition against “Santa Claus”, according to a report by Guangming Daily.

Many Chinese cities have been filled with Christmas neon lights, Christmas songs, Christmas trees, and the images of “Santa Claus”in recent days. As a matter of fact, foreign festivals are becoming more popular than certain traditional Chinese festivals among the Chinese people, particularly the youth. “Certain traditional festivals have died out because people have forgotten their spiritual meanings, ”said noted writer Feng Jicai. More and more Chinese people are beginning to exchange gifts on Valentine's Day and Christmas. However, many of them know nothing about Chinese New Year pictures or sugarcoated figurines(小糖人), and have never heard suona music. Certain folk customs on the Dragon Boat Festival, Tomb Sweeping Day, and other traditional festivals have gradually disappeared. Under such circumstances, even the “Chinese Fortune Grandpa” is unlikely to defeat “Santa Claus”.

However, it is not a bad thing to some extent. It constantly reminds people to restore the “true face” of traditional festivals. China has listed traditional Tomb Sweeping Day, Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival as legal holidays, which brings more paid leaves to the public, and helps to awake the public awareness of traditional festivals.

In modern society, festival is a carrier of culture and its meaning largely depends on their understandings and usages by people. Compared with foreign festivals, traditional Chinese festivals are not inferior (次于) in cultural meanings, but lack of fashion sought by modern people. If people do not appreciate the historical culture contained by traditional festivals, and only take pleasure-seeking as the most important, the significance of traditional festivals will fade away and the inheritance (继承) of fine traditional culture will be cut off.

【1】The second paragraph implies that ________.

    A. traditional festivals should co-exist with foreign festivals

    B. all the Chinese festivals are disappearing in the near future

    C. western festivals are constantly impacting on our festivals

    D. the Chinese people have the public awareness of traditional festivals

【2】We can learn from the passage that ________.

    A. an image designed by the Chinese people will be displayed

    B. the Chinese gift-giver was intended to symbolize traditional culture

    C. many foreigners know nothing about Chinese festivals

    D. the Chinese are beginning to exchange gifts on the Mid-Autumn Festival

【3】Many Chinese youth dislike traditional festivals because they think ________.

    A. traditional festivals are out of fashion now

    B. the historical culture is more difficult to understand

    C. western festivals contain more cultural meanings

    D. the inheritance will cut off their contact with western festivals

【4】What would be the best title of the passage?

    A. Gone are Chinese Traditional Festivals

    B. True Face of Chinese Traditional Culture

    C. Foreign Festivals Popular with Chinese

    D. Chinese Fortune Grandpa VS. Santa Claus
