26、Back in the distant past, job candidates had interests or hobbies. For example, reading a book was a perfectly acceptable way of spending your spare time. No longer. Today you will probably be asked if you have a “personal passion project”, and the more exhausting your answer sounds, the better.
Passion is becoming basic for workplace success. A new piece of research from Jon Jachimowicz and Hannah Weisman of Harvard Business School includes an analysis of 200 million job postings in America. It finds that the number which mentions “passion” rose over time, from 2% in 2007 to 16% in 2019.
On the surface this makes sense. Better, surely, for an employee to be enthusiastic than not. Most workers want to do a job they love; most companies want a workforce that is committed and motivated.
But passion can affect judgment. For firms, the obvious danger is rewarding commitment over competence. The super-keen employee who volunteers for everything may not be that great at their job. Some research finds that passion may indeed be blinding managers to reality: it finds that even when the performance of passionate employees is on the downward slope, they are still more likely to be given promotions than peers who tend not to say much.
There are only so many ways to communicate passion. Widening your eyes and nodding wildly: too weird. Jumping, cheering and sweating: even weirder. Working ever longer hours, on the other hand, is a fairly simple way to show that your commitment is beyond question.
It is great to feel passion for your job. But if you are up at 4 am for a meeting with Asia, constantly working on your holiday or have just been handed a mop (抹布) and a bucket by your boss, you are in the grasp of something that is not entirely healthy.

28、How might architecture aid in solving the housing crisis and help build a more sustainable future? In 2019, 3D printing company WASP and Mario Cucinella Architects (MCA) revealed their concept to design the first 3D printed house made entirely from clay. Today, the joint project, known as TECLA, is finally complete and on display near Bologna, Italy.
Over the past few years, a number of 3D printed homes and communities have been conceptualized. While previous structures were made from concrete or plastic, TECLA was built from soil found at the site mixed with water, fibers from rice husks (壳) and a binder (粘合剂), the last of which is less than 5% of the total volume. Printing with clay does have its weaknesses. It’s a much slower process than quick-drying concrete — the design can be printed in 200 hours but the clay mixture can take weeks to dry, depending on climate, and it also has height limitations.
Building homes from earth, Cucinella pointed out, is not new. “The challenge was really using an old material in the history of architecture with new technology to find a new shape of a house,” Cucinella said. To that end, the Crane WASP printers mixed water with the local earth, and then printed the 60-square-meter TECLA model layer by layer. The design features two circular spaces joined together with skylights, inviting full natural light inside. The residence includes a living area, a bedroom and bathroom. Its furniture, including tables and chairs, can also be printed using WASP’s machinery, while components like doors and windows were fixed post-printing.
The idea behind TECLA isn’t necessarily to copy the same home for any environment, but to adjust the design based on the location. “We are not producing one type of house that you can print and use everywhere, because it’s different if you design a house in the north of Italy, or in the middle of Africa,” Cucinella explained. “The house responds to different climates.” Additionally, the building process can be easily taught and widely used.
【1】What is the disadvantage of printing with clay?
A.3D printers are costly.
B.Clay is not strong enough.
C.It’s not easy to mix rice husks with clay.
D.It takes a long time to dry the mixture.
【2】Which of the following best describes TECLA?
A.It is air-conditioned.
B.It is the first 3D printed house.
C.It is fully equipped.
D.It adopts a solar heating system.
【3】What is the significance of TECLA?
A.It adapts to different climates.
B.It limits the height of buildings.
C.It uses few binders in printing.
D.It can be moved without effort.
【4】What is the best title for the text?
A.The challenges for 3D printing
B.Is this 3D printed home the future of housing?
C.The ways to renew 3D printing machinery
D.Can we simplify the instructions on 3D printing?
29、 Most of my friends are moving outside the city to avoid the noise, smog, traffic, and crime of the city. One friend says, "The air is heavily polluted in the city, so I prefer to live outside, where the air is clean.” Another friend is unpleased with the traffic. Downtown is crowded with cars! You can’t find a parking place, and the traffic jams are terrible.” Everyone is worried about crime. “The city is full of criminals -- it's too dangerous.”
For them, the rural(乡村的) life is a cure for all problems, green grass, flowers, swimming pools, barbecues, and so on. Yet after they have lived there for a year or so, they realize that rural life is not so pleasant as they were expecting. Why? Their gardens! They soon learn that the main part of rural life is yard work. After they work all weekend in their gardens, they are too tired to swim in their pools or cook some meat on their barbecues. And they can’t live in the countryside without a car. Most of them moved to the countryside to avoid traffic, but now they are blocked on a busy freeway two hours every day to drive to work downtown.
My opinions about urban life are different-I love to live downtown! Why? First, in the city, I can enjoy nature. I can walk through the park. Smell the flowers, sit on the grass and visit the animals in the zoo. Yet I don 't have to do yard work or feed the animals. Also, I can get everywhere by bus; if there is a traffic jam, I can walk home. I think the criminal life will reflect changes in society too; if people are buying homes outside the city, the criminals will soon follow. Criminals want to avoid noise, smog, and pollution, too. Then, overcrowding and crime will be problems of the suburbs instead of the city!
【1】The first paragraph is used to _______.

【2】What did those moving outside think of their life in the city?

B. Having gardens to take care of.
C. Failing to find parking lots.
D. Suffering heavy traffic on the road.

She was doing well, but then gave it up. She probably found it boring. Then she took up social work, and finally went to work 【6】a designer and he became her husband. We have such similar tastes in books and music 【7】 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.
I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 【8】 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.
We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.

But if those same electric cars were recharged 【6】 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.
Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often 【7】 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 【8】. Diesel cars are also more 【9】 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.
Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 【10】 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

40、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成-一个完整的故事。
I walked to Mrs. Windsor's house and waited outside. She was working with another student, and I was not supposed to bother them by ringing the bell. 1 stood against the wall and daydreamed what I'd rather be doing. I had been tutored enough to read, understand, and even write some musical compositions, but I just didn't have a gift for it. Mrs. Windsor had offered to give me the lessons for free, so I felt my duty to try.
The door opened and Wendy Barton came out. 1 walked in, sat down on the piano bench and began to sort through my sheet music. Today Mrs. Windsor introduced her niece Pasha to teach me.
With a smile, Pasha sat beside me on the piano bench, opened my sheet music to the beginning page and asked me to play. I arranged my fingers on the keys. Then I frowned(皱眉) and concentrated to make the notes on the page match the finger movements. I had to admit I was a rather mechanical (呆板的) pianist.
After about a page or two, Pasha gently put her hand on top of mine as if to calm my fingers. There was a long pause. “What are you hearing in the music?" 1 looked at her rather strangely and admitted I didn't know what she meant. “Like a story. Here, let me try and you listen," Pasha advised.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting her fingers dance lightly over the keys. Then, she began to play. “See, it begins here beside some kind of river. Hear the water flowing beside you?" Her fingers rose and fell gently on the keys. “Now a princess appears and she's picking flowers from the water's edge." A happy piece of music filled the air in time to Pasha's dancing fingers.
