二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   The Curiosity Detector was never fully sterilized before it landed on Mar. And there's been debate whether the rover drill might pollute certain subsurface areas thought to potentially give birth to life. But it turns out the detector may not need to drive somewhere to pollute that spot with Earth's micro-livings. Because if there are any tiny earth livings on the detector, the strong winds on Mars might be able to spread them around the Red Planet instead.

“Wind storms are very common on Mars. So you have one point of pollution, and given the proper conditions, you could spread whatever you were carrying there to distant places." Said Armando Azua-Bustos, a research scientist at the Center for Astrobiology at the Superior Council of Scientific Research in Spain.

Azua-Bustos is now more certain that such spread might be possible because of an experiment his team carried out in Chile's Atacama Desert-the conditions of which are greatly similar to the Mars'. There, his team placed containers along two paths cutting from the coast into the driest parts of the Atacama. One path was 30 miles long; the other 40 miles long. They waited for winds to deliver coastal dust to the containers. Then they grew whatever landed.

On both paths, they found amounts of bacteria species, which suggests that micro-livings are indeed able to fly over the driest and most sun-shined desert on Earth in just a few hours—and arrive unharmed. The details are in the journal Scientific Reports.

The researchers say wind could therefore be a way to easily pollute another planet with Earth micro-livings if spacecraft aren't sterilized—or a way for Martian life in once-fertile areas to give birth to others by lying on dust in the wind.

【1】Why is there debate over the Curiosity Rover?

A.Because it can't drive anywhere by itself without wind.

B.Because its drill may damage the surface of Mars.

C.Because it has been polluted before it landed on Mars.

D.Because it may destroy the potential environment of life on Mars with Earth's micro-livings.

【2】How did Azua-Bustos' team find supportive evidence for his opinion?

A.They studied the data of wind storms about Mars.

B.They did an experiment under the similar conditions of Mars.

C.They found a large quantity of bacteria on Mars.

D.They used the details in the journal Scientific Reports.

【3】According to Azua-Bustos, Earth's micro-livings on Mars may be spread mainly by________.

    A.the detector's drill

    B.two paths

    C.strong wind

    D.driving around

【4】Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A.The conditions on Mars are similar to those on Earth.

B.The strong wind on Mars can pollute the micro-livings in the subsurface area.

C.All spacecrafts must be sterilized before they are launched into space.

D.Chile's Atacana Desert is one of the driest and most sun-shined desert on Earth.

  • 27、Genetic testing offers people insight into the types of diseases they are most likely to develop — but a new study suggests most people do not alter their lifestyles based on this information. These tests — known as genome sequencing — analyze a person's DNA, telling patients about their known risk for diseases like cancer or diabetes. But being told you’re at a higher risk for lung cancer doesn’t seem to motivate anyone to quit smoking or alcohol, this study suggests. Because of this, the scholars argue that genetic testing should be banned as a tool for improving people's health.

Today’s finding came from pulling data from 18 other studies that followed people after they received the results of genetic tests. Receiving information about genetic risks didn’t inspire people to eat differently, exercise more, or stop smoking, "Expectations have been high that giving people information about their genetic risk will empower them to change their behavior, but we have found no evidence that this is the case," study author Theresa Marteau, director of behavior and health research said in a press release.

Genetic testing, which the National Institutes of Health says costs anywhere from $100 to $2,000, has become much more accessible as commercial testing companies such as 23andMe and Sure Genomics have sprung up. These companies are not allowed to share disease risk estimates with consumers thanks to the Food and Drug Administration. However, today’s study didn’t specify whether the genetic testing were purely from academic sequencing, or if any of these companies had had a role in supplying the data.

Genetic testing doesn’t get people to change their behavior for the better, but it doesn't have any known negative effects either. Knowing the results of these tests didn't change people's depression or anxiety levels. And there's no indication that testing inspires people to pick up risky or dangerous health habits either, the study found.

Actually a genetic predisposition to a certain disease is common among people.   Some people are born weak in heart. Some are innately vulnerable in digestive system. But these most common risk factors usually don't raise a person's chances of getting the disease by a significant amount. It's possible that some of the patients in the study had substantially high disease risks based on their DNA profile, but those patients tend to be rather rare. "It’s still likely that communicating this type of information is very valuable to some people, but it’s just that there aren’t that many of those people," Zikmund-Fisher from the University of Michigan said. "The idea that providing genetic risk information is going to be transformative to everyone seems unlikely."

【1】Why did some experts suggest stopping genetic testing?

A.Genome sequencing aren’t accurate in detecting certain disease risks.

B.Genetic testing results fail to encourage people to remove bad habits.

C.Genetic testing does neither good nor harm to people’s behaviorial improvement.

D.Genetic testing results are offered by commercial testing companies.

【2】The underlined word predisposition to in the passage is closest in meaning to _____.

    A.testing on

    B.prediction about

    C.sensitivity to

    D.insight into

【3】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Theresa Marteau believes genetic testing helps to change people’s behaviors.

B.Sure Genomics is forbidden to deliver illness risk expectations to patients.

C.Genetic testing results are totally coming from academic sequencing.

D.Genetic testing results in a way worsen the patients’ moods and emotions.

【4】It’s said that people’s unconcerned response to genetic testing doesn’t cause much harm because ______.

A.getting rid of bad life habits doesn’t do much good to people’s health

B.almost all people have certain disease risks based on genetic testing

C.providing genetic risk information interferes with the medical treatment

D.genetic testing shows few people are at a high risk of getting certain diseases

  • 28、   Last fall,my dad and I visited Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary, which is located in the mountains of Northern Thailand. Although our stay was short, it turned out to be the most memorable part of our holiday.

Upon arrival,we headed to the base to learn about the elephants that were in the care. The eldest,Too Meh, had spent much of her life giving tourists rides with a heavy iron seat tied to her back. Her daughter,Mae Doom, and grandsons,Dodo and Gen Thong, had also spent years in chains doing hard work to entertain tourists. It broke our hearts to hear their sad stories.

Early the next morning, we saw Too Meh and Mae Doom exploring the forest and Dodo playing by the river. Seeing them free was a heartwarming experience. Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary was founded with the goal of protecting the welfare of elephants, and that is why this place does not offer elephant rides or elephant performances of any kind. Instead, it tries to educate visitors about these amazing animals.

But we did more than just get to know the elephants. We also cooked and ate together with our host family, learned about the language of the local people, and helped teach English to the children in the village. In doing these activities, we were able to experience the local customs and culture firsthand.By providing such opportunities for visitors, the place gives back to the village by helping the villagers make more money and learn English. It's a win-win situation.

If you want to see elephants in their natural environment,Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary is the nice place to go. It's an experience you won't forget.

  • 29、   Yesterday was my final day as an English language assistant in Paris. I have loved every single moment of my time teaching, and could not have asked for a better school, with the most wonderful students. When applying to be a language assistant. I was a little worried about what the students would be like.

Upon arrival, I found the easiest approach to creating lesson plans was to focus on what was happening right here and now. For example, when it was Halloween in the UK, I found plenty of brainchildren to help me teach my students all about the different cultures and traditions they do not have in France. They loved it! And now, seven months later, it's all over!

The whole experience has been amazing. I highly recommend being a language assistant. I don't want to become a teacherand I didn't before I arrived, but the skills and experience I have gained from these entire seven months of working is indescribable. Now, I'm finding myself still walking down the street and having ideas pop into my mind and saying, “Oh! 1 can teach mv class about that next week!” It's very bizarre(异乎寻常的).

I think this first week of having no work and not needing to think of potential lesson plans will be the hardestand it was surprisingly difficult to say goodbye to most of my classes. But deep downI know that my time teaching in Paris has given me so much experience and a completely new outlook on how to communicate with younger people with different needs and learning styles.

1Where did the author work as a teaching assistant?

    A.In America. B.In England. C.In France. D.In Canada.

2What does the underlined word “brainchildren” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Clever children. B.Different assistants.

    C.Successful experience. D.Sudden good ideas.

3What did the author think of her teaching experience?

A.The writer thought it useless. B.The writer liked it very much.

C.The writer found it very strange. D.The writer had no idea about it.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.My Teaching Experience in Paris

B.An English Language Assistant in Paris

C.How to Communicate with Younger People

D.How to Become an Amazing Language Teacher
