26、 For months, their adventure through China’s south-western Yunnan province had gone almost unnoticed. But last week, when images of a group of 15 Asian elephants walking through a residential(居民的) area appeared on social media, it immediately seized the imagination of the nation, stirring up considerable media interest and questions as to what caused their unusual journey.
The movement was so unusual that authorities sent as many as 360 people with 76 cars and nine drones(无人机) to track it. State TV has spent days following their every footstep. Chinese wildlife authorities have been struggling to understand why the elephants left their natural habitat last year. According to Xinhua, a group of 16 wild elephants began the journey in March 2020 to the north. In November, they arrived in Pu’er in Yunnan, where a female elephant gave birth to a baby, and settled there for five months. They then continued the walk on 16 April. A week later, two left the group, leaving 15 to continue their odyssey.
The appearance of the animals has not been warmly received by residents in Yunnan. Along the way, they have caused much destruction, eating whole fields of corn and ruining farm buildings. State broadcaster CCTV has estimated the damage to be at least 6.8m yuan ($1.07m). Fortunately, no human death has been reported so far.
Chinese experts said there had been other reports of elephants wandering into villages and harming crops in recent years. “Large-scale human engineering developments have changed the ‘islanding’ of elephant habitats,” said Zhang Li, a professor from Beijing Normal University. “The traditional zones between humans and elephants are gradually disappearing, and the chances of elephants’ facing humans naturally increase greatly.”
The wild elephant population in Yunnan is about 300, up from 170 in 1980, but the habitat area has decreased from 2,084 square km in 1976 to less than 500 square km in recent years.

27、 India's capital New Delhi is trying something new to help clean up its air. A smartphone application that alws residents to report the presence of construction dust or the burning of leaves and garbage in New Delhi's publie parks to autorities was released Friday. One of the versions of the app allows users to upload the pictures of likely pollutants. The other allows authorities to check and act on complaints. The phone app was released by the Environmental Pollution Authority, a monitoring group set up on the order of India's Supreme Court inApril.
Over the last few years, New Delhi, which is under the label of being the world's most polluted city, has struggled with ways to handle serious pollution, which becomes especially obvious during the colder winter months as the city's air turns to a gray haze(霾). Over the last decade or so, India has seen pollution rise as its economy has boomed and it has continued to rely on burning coal to generate electricity. The number of vehicles on the road has increased. Hundreds of millions of poor people still use wood or whatever they can grab at the garbage dump to build fires for cooking or keeping warm on winter nights.

28、The man who invented the World Wide Web a few decades ago is calling for major changes to make it better for humans. In an open letter published on Tuesday, Berners-Lee said that the web was used by half the world's population.
Berners-Lee said the web had clearly created great opportunities for humans to progress and made life easier for millions of people. Actually, it also has offered opportunities to groups who traditionally cannot hear a new voice in society. However, he added that the web had also provided new ways for cheats to carry out crimes (犯罪).
“Against the backdrop of news stories about how the web is misused, it's understand able that many people feel afraid and unsure if the web is really a force for good,” he wrote.
Berners-Lee created a group called the World Wide Web Foundation. He is looking for help from governments, companies and people to become more involved in shaping the web to do more good for humans. His actual plan is called the “Contract(合同)for the Web”.
Under this contract, governments are called on to take steps to make sure all people can connect to the Internet and that personal privacy is respected. Businesses are asked to keep the Internet prices low so more people can use the web. In addition, companies should respect privacy and develop technologies that aim to put people first.
The plan also calls on people to create materials for the web and work with others to make sure that there is rich, quality information for everyone. Besides, people should seek to “ build strong communities that respect personal speech and human equality.” “The path to make the Internet better is the responsibility of everyone who uses it,” Berners-Lee added, “making big changes will not be easy, but will be very well worth it in the end.”

29、Natural disasters may claim thousands of lives or destroy millions of homes. What can we learn from disasters?
Sometimes, there are no real answers. Everyone has lost something and someone, and they keep on asking what they have done to deserve this cruel fate. It’s okay to hold on to these questions, but no matter how hard and painful it is, you should keep moving, breathing and living. 【1】
Even strangers can teach you kindness. There may be millions of selfish people in the world. 【2】 There is still kindness out there, waiting to be discovered. You will find it everywhere, at the most unexpected places—even among the wastelands left by the disaster.
Family is everything. Sometimes we forget to love our family, just because we’re too busy with our own lives. 【3】 We will not realize their value until we arrive at an empty house, an abandoned and forgotten place that you once called “home”.
【4】 Sure, reality can be harsh and unforgiving but it doesn’t mean that we should blame ourselves and feel like a victim forever. We have to strive and thrive; we have to fight and do whatever it takes to resist and rise up. Not everyone will have a happy ending or an interesting plot, but we can always decide how to write the ending.
Every day of your life should be spent loving and living. Don’t be angry at the world for letting you live an unbearable life of heartbreaks and frustrations. 【5】 So just love deep and love hard. Live as if it’s your only chance to find the happiness that you deserve.
A.You’ll find your way someday.

30、 When we choose a word we do more than give information; we also express our feelings about whatever we're describing. Words point to _________ but often connect these to attitudes at the same time; they can also _________ the beliefs and attitudes of other people. How would the different descriptions affect the listeners? The fact that words can _________ like this is important and valuable, for it adds a(n) _________ to our communication with one another. Advertisers make use of it in a number of ways.
The producer needs a name that will do _________ than just label(贴标签): he wants a name that brings suitable _________ as well-the ideas that the word brings to the mind will help _________ the product. If all were sold at the same price, which coat or suit would you choose from this range of shades—Dark Tan Brown, Mud Brown.
Just because of this, the advertiser is very _________ a bout the way he describes his product and what effect it will bring _________. Almost every advertisement has certain key words (sometimes, but not ________, in bold or large letters, or beginning with a capital letter)that are intended to be persuasive(具有说服力的), __________ at the same time appearing to be informative. It's difficult enough __________ to describe what a thing is and how it works in words, especially in a few words, but the writers who write for the advertisements also try to __________ feelings, associations(关联)and attitudes. Some words seem to have been so __________ in selling that the advertisers use them almost as if they were a magic key to a certain sale. How __________, for instance, have you come across the word “golden” in advertisements?
One thing reminds us of another especially if we often see them together. As a matter of fact, these __________, also called “associations” are sometimes more imaginary than real: for many people a robin(知更鸟)suggests Christmas, for others silver candlesticks suggest wealth. The tricks of the advertising business are all examples of the advertiser encouraging us to associate products with those things he thinks we really __________ —a good job, a sport car, a beautiful girlfriend-perhaps most of all a feeling of __________. The advertiser often creates a “good image(形象)” of the product by showing us someone who uses his product and who leads the kind of life we should like to lead. We buy not just the product but the sense of importance that goes __________ it. We drink Coca-Cola not just for the taste, but because we'd like to be thought of as being as cheerful as the __________ people who drink it in the ads.
