27、 Loneliness hurts. It is psychologically distressing and so physically unhealthy that being lonely increases the likelihood of an earlier death by 26 percent. But psychologists think it hurts so much because, like hunger and thirst, loneliness acts as a biological alarm bell.
On March 26, just as the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the world, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology posted a report on bioRxiv. It is the first study in humans to show that both loneliness and hunger share signals deep in a part of the brain that governs very basic impulses for reward and motivation. So, our need to connect is apparently as fundamental as our need to eat.
The researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to compare brain responses to loneliness and hunger. 40 adult participants underwent a 10-hour session depriving (剥夺) them of food and another 10-hour session denying them social contact. Both sessions served as a control (对照) condition for each other.
The social-isolation condition was challenging to arrange. Some people are lonely in a crowd, while others enjoy solitude To induce(l t)not just objective isolation but subjective feelings of loneliness, the researchers had the participants spend their time from 9 A.M. to 7 P.M. in a room at the laboratory without phones, laptops or even novels in case fictional characters provided some social support. Puzzles were allowed, as was preapproved nonfiction reading or writing.
Researchers then focused on a midbrain region called “the substantia nigra”, a center of dopamine (多巴胺) release involved with motivation and desire. The dopaminergic response shows a strong wanting. In the scanner, participants saw images of their preferred forms of social interaction and of their favorite foods, as well as a control image of flowers. It was then found that the substantia nigra responded only to cues of what they had been deprived of. The magnitude of the response correlated with the subjects’ self-reports of how hungry or lonely they were, though the feelings of hunger were consistently stronger.
Finally, the researchers used machine learning to confirm their findings. A software classifier trained to recognize neural patterns during fasting (斋戒) proved able to recognize similar neural patterns from the social-isolation condition even though it had never “seen” them. So there seems to be an underlying shared neural signature between the two states.
Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, an obvious next question for the work was whether different forms of social media could satisfy the need for social connection. Those researchers were never able to get funding for such a study. But now it seems they will.
【1】The report posted on March 26 ________.
A.is based on the social-isolation condition during the pandemic

28、 Each one of us has a set of goals. We work to reach them every day. But the wise should set goals they feel are achievable, a new study shows, as our belief of the goals has a large impact on our life satisfaction later on- whether we achieve said goals or not.
The team examined how life goals affect people's happiness and well-being throughout adulthood. One of the key findings of the study is that people who perceive(将……视作) )their goals as being attainable(可达到的) were overall reported higher affective well-being in the follow-up surveys. The authors take this as an indication that it's the feeling of control over one's life that contributes to these positive feelings.
Our needs also change over time, so the team also looked into how age impacts the choice of goals. Younger participants, for example, rated personal growth, social status, social relationships, and professional advancement as important. Older participants rated social engagement and health as being more important. However, this change in priorities (优先)wasn't sudden -we don't drop personal growth in favor of health the second we turn 40, for example. It happened gradually.
It's important to find which goals work for you. But always try to keep them attainable, or break down big goals into a series of smaller ones. Even if you don't reach them, you'll probably be happier later on.
【1】When it comes to goals, what do the wise tend to do?
A. Try hard to work towards goals. B. Set themselves attainable goals.
C. Set different goals from the rest. D. Satisfy themselves with professional goals
【2】Which is the finding of the study?
A. Achieving goals leads to positive feelings.
B. Age has little to do with people's choice of life goals.
C. Attainable goals contribute to higher affective well-being.
D. People who can control over their life will achieve most goals.
【3】Which goal are older people more likely to value?
A. Health. B. Social status.
C. Personal growth. D. Professional advancement
【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Setting as many goals as possible. B. Breaking every goal down.
C. Sparing no effort to reach goals. D. Setting suitable and achievable goals.
29、 A recent study shows that more than 90% of adults report hearing earworm songs on a weekly basis. They can't walk into their office without Rihanna's voice singing “work, work, work” in their mind. That was commonly known as earworm songs — those sticky tunes that continue to play in their heads.
Luckily, most people report earworm songs as pleasant. But others find them annoying or even maddening. “Some people are troubled by them to the point that it disturbs life,” says Elizabeth Margulis, a professor who has studied earworm songs.
Margulis says earworm songs tend to have some predictable characteristics. For one thing, they tend to be small parts of a song — not the whole track. And “the songs you've heard recently also have the most possibility to get stuck in your memory,” she says.
But sometimes something strange and unpredictable can also start a track playing in your head. “Once I was at the doctor's office and saw a poster of a man who I thought looked like Gaston — a character from Beauty and the Beast,” Margulis recalls. A couple minutes passed, and she realized she couldn't get “Be our Guest”, the song in the movie, out of her head, even though she hadn't thought of the tune in years. In that instance, she was able to identify what touched of her earworm: the Gaston-looking man in the poster. “But the connections can be really unclear,” she says.
Margulis points out that, in all of human history, recorded music is a very new phenomenon. She says some have inferred that earworm songs are also new — the unintended consequence of being able to hear the same song played everywhere in the same way over and over again. So far, the convincing explanation for why human beings experience earworm songs remains a mystery. But there are some well-established ways to cast off the earworm songs.
“Finding a mentally demanding task and putting your mind on it usually shifts attention away from internal music. People tend to get earworms when performing tasks that don't require their full attention — stuff like doing the dishes,” Margulis says.
Chewing gum can also help. When a song is stuck in our heads, it's almost like we're singing along with it. If you make your mouth do something else — chewing gum, eating a meal or talking with a friend — that can kick out the earworm.
You could also face your enemy. By listening to the full track that includes the passage stuck in your head, you may find “closure” and relief.

A friend of mine whose name was John Smith had a bad memory, which made him famous. He was so forgetful that he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to constantly( 经常地)remind him about his meetings, his classes, even his meals! Once he forgot he had eaten breakfast twice, at home and at school. His wife liked to remind her neighbors, “If John didn’t have his head tied on, he would forget that too!” Since Smith was a professor at a well-known university, his forgetfulness was often an embarrassment to him. It wasn’t that he was not clever, as some critical people tended to say, but just very, very absent-minded.
One hot summer day, Pro.Smith decided to take his children to a seaside town about a three-hour train ride away. To make the trip more interesting for his young children, he kept the name of the town a secret. However, by the time they arrived at the station, Smith forgot the name of the town he was planning to visit. luckily, a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while Smith hurried back home to find out where he was going.
The professor’s wife was surprised to see him again so soon.
“Oh, my dear, I forgot the name of the town.”
“What? You forgot the name? Maybe one day you will forgot my name! Now I’ll write the name of that town on a piece of paper, and you put it in your pocket and please, please don’t forget where you put it.”
Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again. Ten minutes later she was astonished to see him outside the house for the third time.

Nowadays, going to a higher education institution is not the only option one has. The Internet-the place where it is possible to find anything--has become a perfect solution for those who want to learn something new, but have no possibility or desire to go to college. Although online education may not seem to be large enough compared to the traditional one, it possesses a number of solid advantages you should consider.
First of all, online education means comfort. Studying in a college or university often equates to moving to a different city, handing over loads of money, living on campus, and having to go out no matter how horrible the weather outside is Studying online, you get yourself rid of all these disadvantages. Regardless of whether you are at home, on vacation, or having a lunch break in the office, all you need to learn something new is your laptop and an Internet connection.
Secondly, online education is much more affordable than the traditional one. For example, on Udemy, you can find all kinds of educational programs whose prices often stay in the range of $180-200. Coursera, along with regular paid courses, also offers a variety of free educational materials available for everyone. Of course, not all of the online degrees offer cheaper prices, but due to the absence of travelling costs and other factors, studying online proves to be more accessible. Studying materials, as well as other resources, are often included in the price for an online course.
Finally, you can study at your own. Educational institutions have to focus on an average student. The disciplines you will study, the methods of education, teachers, and the academic environment are not yours to choose. At the same time, the Internet gives you the opportunity to study as much as you want, with any teacher or instructor you like. Many courses online have teaching videos. You can watch one per day, or you can finish an entire course in a week-you can do whatever is convenient to you.
