  • 22、The Internet influences(影响) the way we shop, how we communicate with each other, how we find answers to questions and much more. But for some time there have been worries that the older people are being left behind because they are unable to use a computer.

However, this is changing and several charities(慈善机构) and community groups now help older people to get online. Paul Robinson runs such a charity, Seniors Online. Paul worked for an IT company before deciding to leave his well-paid job and start the charity. As he explains, “I used to spend a few hours a week helping some older people use the Internet at the local email and receive photographs of their children and grandchildren is a wonderful experience for them. And when I saw what a big influence it had on their lives, I left my job and set up Seniors Online. We run training courses so that older people can enjoy the same chance as us.”

One of Paul’s students is 89-year-old Betty, who had never used a computer in her life before she joined one of the classes. That was six months ago and Betty has now completed the course and received her “graduation” certificate(证书). “I joined a class so I could learn how to use email to keep in touch with members of my family,” she says. “That’s fantastic but the best thing of all is learning how to research my family history online. Using a computer is a bit scary(可怕的) to begin with because you think you’ll do something terrible if you press the wrong key. But you soon learn that you can’t really break anything—and the teachers are very patient. I think all people of my age should have a course like this.”

【1】What’s the writer’s purpose of writing this passage?

A.To describe how the Internet can be of help to older people.

B.To encourage children to keep in touch with their elderly parents.

C.To tell older people that they have to learn how to use the Internet.

D.To help Paul to get money for his charity.

【2】Paul left his job with the IT company because ________.

A.he realized how important the Internet was to older people

B.he wanted to help older people to find their children

C.he couldn’t receive too much money from it

D.he wanted to work in his local library

    【3】According to Betty, ________.

A.the teachers take the time to help them

B.it can be very difficult to use the keyboard

C.it doesn’t matter if you break the computer

D.you need to be patient to learn to use a computer

  • 23、Vicky Zhao is from the mainland working in Hong Kong. For her, one thing she can't stand is people standing on the wrong side of the escalator(自动扶梯) in subway stations.

“Escalators help us move faster and save time. It isn't a place to rest,” the 24yearold says, “I often see tourists blocking(挡住) the way with their heavy suitcases or chatting on the escalators during rush hour. It makes me very angry.”

Agreeing that she is not the patient type, Zhao says things are much better in Hong Kong than in cities on the mainland where people often pay no attention to “stand right, walk left” signs.

The reason behind the rule “stand right, walk left” seems clear. Even though you may want to have a rest and just wait while you're transported up or down, you should still consider others and leave enough space for people in a hurry, so that they can run and take the train.

But the people who stand on escalators will tell the walkers not to be so impatient. In a recent story about the escalator rule, one stander says, “If the person is in such a rush, why not just take the stairs?”

Many cities' escalators, including London's and Beijing's, use the “stand right, walk left” rule to speed up the movement of people. (In Australian cities like Sydney you should stand on the left side instead.) But some cities discourage people from moving on escalators out of safety reasons. In Hong Kong's subway stations people are asked to “stand still” on escalators. Even so, most people keep the “stand right, walk left” rule.

Whatever the escalator rule is in the place you live in or visit, do what most people are doing and always be mindful of others; leave enough space between each other; don't stay at the end of the escalator, and if someone is blocking your way, a simple “excuse me” is enough.

【1】According to the passage, Vicky Zhao ________.

    A.comes from Hong Kong

    B.is a 24yearold girl

C.wants to be a patient person

    D.works in a subway station

【2】The passage mentions that people are advised not to move on the escalator in ________.

    A.London

    B.Beijing

    C.Sydney

    D.Hong Kong

【3】It can be learnt from the passage that the writer ________.

    A.is crazy about taking escalators

B.agrees to the “stay right, walk left” rule

C.tells us to consider other people

D.has been to Hong Kong many times

【4】What's the best title of the passage?

    B.Help others
