26、"Everything happens for the best." my mother said whenever things weren’t going my way. "Don’t worry. One day your luck will change."
I found mom was right after I finished my college education. I had decided to try for a job in a radio station. I wanted to host a sports program one day. I went to Chicago and knocked at the door of every station. But I got turned down every time.
In one station, a kind lady said my problem was that I hadn’t got enough experience." Get some work in a small station and work your way up," she said.
I went back home. I couldn’t get a job there, either. I felt really down. "Your luck will change," Mom said to me. I tried another radio station in Iowa. But the owner told me he had already had someone. As I left his office, I asked, "How can someone be a sports announcer (播音员) if he can’t get a job in a radio station?"
I was waiting for the lift when I heard the man call. "What did you mean? Do you know anything about football?" He put me in front of a microphone and asked me to try to imagine that I was giving my opinion on a football game, I succeeded.
On my way home, Mom’s words came back to me," One day your luck will change, son. And when it happens, you’ll feel doubly good because of all the hard work you’ve had." At that moment I knew just what she meant.

27、A group of blue-faced birds step through the grass shoulder to shoulder, red eyes looking around. They look like middle schoolers seeking a cafeteria table at lunchtime. Perhaps they’re not so different.
A new study, led by Damien Farine, an ornithologist who studies collective behaviour, shows that the vulturine guineafowl of eastern Africa, like humans, have multilevel societies. In the past, scientists assumed such social structures required a lot of brainpower. But the pea-brained guineafowl are revealing the faults in that assumption.
These large birds wander across the landscape in packs, often walking so closely that their bodies touch. They may fight each other to maintain their strict hierarchies (等级制度), but at other times they engage in friendly behaviours like sharing food.
Suspecting the guineafowl might have a social structure, Dr. Farine and his colleagues began a thorough study of their society. For a whole year, they made daily observations of 441 birds. Coloured leg bands in unique combinations let researchers tell the black-and-blue birds apart. They also attached GPS devices to the backs of 58 birds, which let them see exactly where every group went, 24 hours a day.
The findings of the research suggest that the vulturine guineafowl have a multilevel society. There are groups within groups within the population as a whole. There even seem to be groups of friends within the small groups. This is the first time anyone has observed such a society in a bird.
And Dr. Farine emphasizes this particular bird’s tiny brain size: “They don’t only have small brains relative to mammals (哺乳动物), they also have quite small brains relative to other birds,” he said.
According to him, living in this kind of society might actually make it easier to keep track of the social order. For example, if groups are stable and a bird can identify just one or two individuals within a group, it knows which group it’s looking at — no need for a brain that can recognize every single animal. Multilevel societies also let animals adjust their group sizes based on whatever challenges they’re facing. Depending on what enemies or resources are around, it might make sense to travel in a combined group rather than a smaller one.
“Having a multilevel structure may not require having a large brain,” Dr. Farine said. There may be more birds and other animals out there that, although small-brained, have societies as many-leveled as our own.

【4】What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To present the findings of a study of the guineafowl.

28、How to Rent Your House
Before handing the keys to your house over to a complete stranger for care, there are decisions you need to make. In fact, the decisions you make now, before searching for a tenant (房客), will make the biggest impact on the success of your rental. 【1】
What Condition Do You Want Your House in?
There is no end to the amount of improving you can do to your house before renting it out. 【2】 When is good enough, good enough?
A house should be clean, empty (unless you are offering it “furnished”, which is uncommon) and free from any major repairs at the time the tenant moves in.
Remember, the home does not need to be as fancy as you would want it to be. 【3】 Tenants will generally never take as good care of your house as you do―so don’t spend too much time or money making unnecessary upgrades that will only be ignored or broken.
Should You Use a Property Manager?
【4】 If you have the time, abilities, and energy to manage yourself―you can save a good deal of money by doing so. However, if you try to manage without the ability―it could end up costing you much more than what a property manager might charge.
How Much Can You Rent Your House for?
Luckily, discovering what the monthly rent will bear for your house is not difficult. 【5】 In business, market research means to get out there and find out what others in your industry are charging; learning how much to charge for rent is no different. Your house will generally rent for about the same amount as other properties that are of similar location, size and condition.
A. The problem becomes learning when to stop.
B. No one wants to be a landlord with those problems.
C. The following are some questions to answer before you rent out your house.
D. Have a professional carpet cleaner clean the carpets before showing the property.
E. Look around at other rentals in your area and try to see what the typical quality is.
F. The best way to determine how much your house will rent for is to simply do market research.
G. The decision about whether to manage yourself or hire a property manager cannot be made by anyone other than you.
29、Three Things We Must Do to Tackle Climate Change
With world leaders meeting at the international climate change conference this August in Glasgow to discuss urgent global action to meet one of the greatest challenges, many people still don’t know what must be done. 【1】 However, the good news we get from the report is that it is not too late to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, if we respond rapidly and decisively. But how? It comes down to the following three things.
Stop using fossil fuels gradually. 【2】 That means no exploration, no new wells, mines, pipelines, or power plants. We already have a vast amount of fossil fuel infrastructure(基础设施), and it will take decades to end its use.
【3】 Sun and wind are the fastest-growing new sources of energy we have. Their costs have fallen sharply, making them the least expensive options and encouraging the adoption of clean energy in more and more locations.
Protect the world’s forests. Forests all over the world currently absorb about a third of the carbon dioxide our activities send out to the atmosphere. 【4】 And this must stop. To meet the planet’s growing food needs, experts urge improved management practices on already-cleared land rather than clearing new land.
Finally, it is high time that we joined hands to protect the only home we have. If so, we can take on the challenge as we would whatever the difficulty is. 【5】 The three actions we suggest are essential for success.
A.Boost the development of new technology.
B.Speed up the use of clean, renewable energy.
C.The alarming messages released urged us to change our lifestyle.
D.To achieve this, we must allow no new development of coal, oil and gas.
E.The “code red” report from the conference greatly shocked many people.
F.We are on a mission to save planet Earth, its people and its natural wonders.
G.Tropical (热带)forests are especially at risk and still being cleared for agricultural uses.
