Lewis Carrol was born on January 27, 1832 in Daresbury, Cheshire, England. His real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. He was the oldest boy in a family of eleven children. As a child, he did well in mathematics and won many prizes. He also created games for himself and his brothers and sisters.

The three little girls often visited the young mathematics teacher in his college rooms. They spent many hours with Carrol, sitting on his couch while he told them fantastic stories about dream worlds. He also drew pictures for these stories.

  • 26、   When something goes wrong, it can be very satisfying to say, “Well, it’s so-and-so’s mistake.” Or “I know I’m late, but isn’t my mistake; the bus was late.” It is probably not your mistake, but once you form the habit of blaming(责备) somebody or something else for a bad situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop paying attention to whom to blame and start paying attention to how to improve the situation. This is the winner’s key to success.

Winners are great at overcoming (克服) problems. For example, if you were late because the bus was late, maybe you need to leave home early. Or, you might call a taxi or call friends for help when in need. For another example, if your workmate causes you problems on the job for short of responsibility (责任心) or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or leave this person with some simple jobs. You should accept that the person is not reliable (可靠的) and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of(不管) how your workmate fails to do his job well.

This is what being a winner is all about—creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don’t have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and chances to develop their own talents. So, stop paying attention to “ whose mistake it is. ” Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stones for success.

1According to the passage, winners _________.

    A. blame themselves rather than others

    B. have responsible and able workmates

    C. meet with fewer difficulties in their lives

    D. deal with problems rather than blame others

2When your workmate brings about a problem, you should _________.

    A. find a better way to overcome the problem

    B. tell him to find the cause of the problem

    C. blame him for his lack of responsibility

    D. ask a more able workmate for help

3When problems happen, winners take them as _________.

    A. excuses for their mistakes

    B. difficulties to greater power

    C. chances to develop their own talents

    D. challenges to their workmates

4Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

    A. A Winner’s Secret

    B. A Winner’s Problem

    C. A Winner’s Chance

    D. A Winner’s Achievement

  • 27、Nowadays, cell phones are part of our lives. Many people have cell phones. They can help us easily find people anywhere at any time. However, using cell phones too often may cause cancer(癌症). It’s reported that people who use a cell phone for 10 years or more may get brain cancer.

The suggestions below may help you reduce(减少) the risk of cancer; When using your cell phone, try to keep it away from your body as much as possible. Don’t put it on the bedside table when you go to sleep.

When you’re on the cell phone, use the speaker(扬声器). In this way, you have just 1/100th of the contact(接触) with radiation you have when you hold it to your ear. An earphone is also a good idea.

Try to keep your conversations short. If you need to talk longer, use an ordinary phone instead.

Change ears when you’re using your cell phone. Before putting it to your ear, wait until the person you are calling picks up the phone.

Your phone gives out radiation when you talk or send messages, but not when you’re listening or getting messages. Listening more and talking less can lower the risk of cancer.

Do not use your cell phone when the signal(信号) is weak or when moving at a high speed, for example in a car or on a train. At high speeds your phone is trying to pick up signals, and this increases the radiation it gives out.

【1】According to the text, using cell phones too much may cause ________.

    C.heart disease

    D.headache

B.use your cell phone on a high-speed train

C.change ears when you’re using your cell phone

D.put your cell phone on your bed

【3】Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?

A.Using an earphone is a good way to reduce the radiation.
