24、 Lewis Carrol is one of the most famous writers for children of all time. He is the author of the children’s classics Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.
Lewis Carrol was born on January 27, 1832 in Daresbury, Cheshire, England. His real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. He was the oldest boy in a family of eleven children. As a child, he did well in mathematics and won many prizes. He also created games for himself and his brothers and sisters.
Lewis Carrol studied at Richmond School (1844-1845) and Rugby School (1846-1850). In 1850, he started studying at Christ Church, Oxford. After finishing his studies, he became a teacher of mathematics at Oxford. Apart from teaching mathematics, he also took photos and wrote essays and poems.
Lewis Carrol loved children. He became friends with the children of Henry George Liddel, Alice and her sisters Lorina and Edith. The three little girls often visited the young mathematics teacher in his college rooms. They spent many hours with Carrol, sitting on his couch while he told them fantastic stories about dream worlds. He also drew pictures for these stories.
During an afternoon picnic in 1864, Dodgson told the Liddel children a story of Alice’s Adventures Underground. Alice liked it very much and when they returned home, she asked him to write it down for her. He fulfilled the little girl’s wish and wrote the story down. He illustrated (配图) it with his own drawings and gave it to Alice.
One day, the story fell into the hands of the novelist Henry Kingsley. He read it and told Carrol that he should publish it. The book was published as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865. It became very successful. Carrol wrote some more stories and in 1871 published Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There.

26、 When something goes wrong, it can be very satisfying to say, “Well, it’s so-and-so’s mistake.” Or “I know I’m late, but isn’t my mistake; the bus was late.” It is probably not your mistake, but once you form the habit of blaming(责备) somebody or something else for a bad situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop paying attention to whom to blame and start paying attention to how to improve the situation. This is the winner’s key to success.
Winners are great at overcoming (克服) problems. For example, if you were late because the bus was late, maybe you need to leave home early. Or, you might call a taxi or call friends for help when in need. For another example, if your workmate causes you problems on the job for short of responsibility (责任心) or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or leave this person with some simple jobs. You should accept that the person is not reliable (可靠的) and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of(不管) how your workmate fails to do his job well.
This is what being a winner is all about—creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don’t have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and chances to develop their own talents. So, stop paying attention to “ whose mistake it is. ” Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stones for success.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. A Winner’s Secret

27、Nowadays, cell phones are part of our lives. Many people have cell phones. They can help us easily find people anywhere at any time. However, using cell phones too often may cause cancer(癌症). It’s reported that people who use a cell phone for 10 years or more may get brain cancer.
The suggestions below may help you reduce(减少) the risk of cancer; When using your cell phone, try to keep it away from your body as much as possible. Don’t put it on the bedside table when you go to sleep.
When you’re on the cell phone, use the speaker(扬声器). In this way, you have just 1/100th of the contact(接触) with radiation you have when you hold it to your ear. An earphone is also a good idea.
Try to keep your conversations short. If you need to talk longer, use an ordinary phone instead.
Change ears when you’re using your cell phone. Before putting it to your ear, wait until the person you are calling picks up the phone.
Your phone gives out radiation when you talk or send messages, but not when you’re listening or getting messages. Listening more and talking less can lower the risk of cancer.
