二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   After a nail salon turns away a physically challenged woman, a stranger makes a truly beautiful gesture, 'Beauty isn't about having a pretty face. It’s about having a pretty mind, a pretty heart, and a pretty soul, oh, and pretty nails! ' That may well be Angela Peter's motto. Last July, Peters, 36, rolled her wheelchair into a nail salon at the Walmart shopping center in Burton, Michigan, with the idea of painting her fingers. But Peters was turned away. The salon told her that they were afraid it would be too difficult to properly paint her nails given that her hands shook. What was meant to be a day of happiness for Peters was now a disappointment.

Ebony Harris, 40, saw everything and approached Peters. Harris offered to do her nails. They shopped for nail polish. They settled on a bright blue-a color that would catch every eye. They then made their way into a neighbouring Subway, found a table for two, and set up shop. Harris gently took Peters' hand into hers and carefully began painting her nails. Watching it al with awe and admiration was Subway employee Tasia Smith. What struck her most was the ease and gentleness displayed by Harris as she painted Peters' nails, all the while chatting as if they were old friends.

Peters, who runs a poetry website, heavenlypoems.com, harbors no bitterness towards the nail salon that turned her away. The salon says they refused to offer Peters service because they were too busy. 'When people do us wrong, we must forgive, ' Peters wrote on her website. 'I just want to educate people that people with different disabilities, like being in a wheelchair, can have our own business and get our nails done like anyone else. '

1Why did Peters go to the Walmart shopping centre?

A.To go shopping. B.To eat at a Subway.

C.To meet her friend Harris. D.To have her nails painted.

    2What caused Peters' disappointment?

C.The salon was busy. D.She had no nail polish.

3How do you find Ebony Harris?

    A.Mean. B.Optimistic.

    C.Caring. D.Stubborn.

4What can we infer from the passage?

A.It's better to use websites to educate people.

B.The salon had its acceptable reason to decline a disabled woman.

C.Those who did something wrong should not be forgiven.

D.People with different challenges should be treated equally.

  • 22、   My dad passed away yesterday and I am processing everything. It's hard to try and find positivity in my pain, but my Dad taught me so much when he was healthy, and when he wasn't, I wanted to share some of the lessons.

Be on the phone less. This one seems strange but in his final moments I was all in, no checking my phone because it really didn't matter.1This was a moment I needed to remember and I would have regretted it if I was distracted in this part of his journey.

2Sometimes we need people to lean on My mom and dad needed a lot of help. I needed a lot of help. We were surrounded by people willing to help us and instead of shutting them out like we've done in the past, we let them in and it was exactly what we needed.

Not everyone will understand your experience.3Just knowing people are here for us means a lot, but I also know that no one will fully understand my experience and that's okay as we are all different.

Family is not necessarily the people who brought you into this world. I am adopted and I know we chose each other.4 I also loved my father very much.

There's nothing more important than being with the ones you love. I was able to hold my Dad when he took his last breath. My mom and I made sure that my dad knew he was loved through this journey.5Everything else is secondary.

    A.All that mattered was him.

    B.Love is what truly matters.

C.Surround yourself with a support system.

D.And he loved me more than anyone on this Earth.

E.It's okay not to remember the reason for everything

F.Really, we can handle more than we ever thought possible.

G.This was a long and hard journey for my mom and I and all of those who care about us.

  • 23、Like a tired marriage, the relationship between libraries and publishers has long been dull. E-books, however, are causing heartache. Libraries know they need digital wares if they are to remain relevant, but many publishers are too careful about piracy and lost sales to co-operate. Among the big six, only Random House and Harper Collins license e-books with most libraries. The others have either denied requests or are reluctantly experimenting.

Publishers are wise to be nervous. Owners of e-readers are exactly the customers they need: book-lovers with money—neither the devices nor broadband connections come cheap. If these wonderful people switch to borrowing e-books instead of buying them, what then? Electronic borrowing is awfully convenient. Unlike printed books, which must be checked out and returned to a physical library miles from where you live, book files can be downloaded at home. Digital library catalogues are often browsed at night from a comfortable sofa. The files disappear from the device when they are due. Awkwardly for publishers, buying an e-book costs more than renting one but offers little extra value.

You cannot resell it, lend it to a friend or burn it to stay warm. Owning a book is useful if you want to taste it repeatedly, but who reads Fifty Shades of Grey twice?

E-lending is not simple, however. There are lots of different and often incompatible (不兼容的) e-book formats, devices and licences. Most libraries use a company called Over Drive, a global distributor that secures rights from publishers and provides e-books and audio files in every format. Yet publishers and libraries are worried by Over Drived market dominance, as the company can increasingly determine fees and conditions.

Library boosters argue that book borrowers are also book buyers, and that libraries are vital spaces for readers to discover new work. Many were cheered by a recent Pewsurvey, which found that more than half of Americans with Horary cards say they prefer to buy their e-books. But the report also noted that few people know that e-books are available at most libraries, and that popular titles often involve long waiting lists, which may be what inspires people to buy. So publishers keep adjusting their lending arrangements in search of the right balance. Random House raised its licensing prices earlier this year and Harper Collins limits libraries to lending its titles 26 times. The others are watching, holding their breath. In Britain the government will soon announce a review of the matter. The story of the library e-book is a nail-biter.

【1】What can be inferred from the first paragraph?

A.Libraries are eager to keep relationship with publishers.

B.Several publishers have sold e-books to most libraries.

C.Libraries care too much about piracy and book sales.

【2】What is the author’s opinion about the electronic borrowing?

    A.awful.

    B.convenient.

A.It has the privilege to offer readers various brands of e-readers.

B.It distributes e-books and audio files to publishers.

C.Its market dominance threatens publishers and libraries.

D.It devotes itself to improving conditions of e-book market.
