  • 21、A good relationship between students and teachers makes the classroom a very inviting place.

When you like your teachers, it’s easier to pay attention to their explanations and improve your marks. 【1】When your teachers consider you to be a friend, they’ll feel more open in class and that will probably influence the classroom in a positive way. Now here are some tips to develop a friendly relationship with your teachers:

Ask questions.【2】Show them that you’re interested in their subjects. That will make them notice you. But never ask questions that you already know the answers to. If your teachers realize that you are not asking real questions, they might think that you’re not actually trying to learn, but only trying to make an impression.

【3】When you see one of your teachers in the hall, greet him/her and ask if he/she is going to that concert or if he/she has seen that movie.【4】Some teachers don’t like to have friendly relationships with students, but most of them are happy to chat with their students. After a while, they may start to talk with you about non-school subjects in the classroom.

The rest is totally up to you; it is very easy to develop a friendly relationship with any of your teachers. If you want to be friends with your teachers, just treat them as friends, but don’t forget that no matter how good friends you are, 【5】.

    A.Talk about non-school subjects.

    B.Choose the right subjects.

C.That way you’ll show that you consider him/her as a friend.

D.If you have any questions about that subject, ask them.

E.they will still be your teachers and deserve your respect.

F.we should obey whatever they ask and finish our homework on time.

G.When you consider your teachers as friends, you’ll certainly have more respect for them.

  • 22、Most people find sugar hard to resist. Our brains need lots of energy and sugary foods provide plenty of it. But when calories are too readily available, it is easy to overdo it. There has been no shortage of research on sugar replacements without the calories, but evidence from animal and human studies has linked some to weight gain. One promising alternative is found in the fruit of Synsepalum dulcificum (奇迹果), a plant native to West Africa. These so-called miracle berries don’t taste sugary themselves, but if you try something sour afterwards it will taste unusually sweet.

In Benin, the fruit is eaten fresh and is mostly used as a sweetener to have with sour foods and drinks, says Dedeou from a university in Benin. The berry with miraculin(奇迹果蛋白)is very appreciated by local consumers, especially the kids and people with diabetes (糖尿病).

Despite the miracle berry’s promise as a sugar replacement, it is only produced on a limited scale and isn’t available worldwide. The berries don’t travel well and the plant is slow to grow.

To create an alternative source of miraculin, researchers at the University of Tsukuba in Japan have genetically engineered tomatoes to produce the protein, but this isn’t necessary, says Tchokponhoue whose team is working to help enlarge the production of miracle berries in West Africa. Earlier this year, a team at Hainan University in China published the genome(基因图谱)of Synsepalum dulcificum, which may help.

Spanish start-up Baia Food has plans to promote sustainable growth of the plant in Ghana and market the dried berries. You can order tablets of freeze-dried miracle berries online but they are pricey, costing around £18 for a pack of 10. If you can afford it, the berry’s taste-twisting power is fun to try at home. Let the tablet melt on your tongue, then try tasting acidic foods such as lemons. The effect should last between 15 and 60 minutes.

【1】What do we know about Synsepalum dulcificum?

    A.It contains high calories.

B.It is related to weight gain.

    C.It tastes unusually sweet.

D.It serves as a sugar replacement

【2】What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.Efforts made to obtain more miraculin.

B.Genome published to help do the research

C.Creation advocated to produce miracle berries.

    D.Transformations performed to engineer tomatoes

【3】What can we say about tablets of freeze-dried miracle berries?

    A.They are sour.

    B.They are inexpensive

    C.They are accessible

    D.They are productive.

【4】What is the author’s attitude to getting the sugar alternative?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Optimistic.

    C.Defensive.

    D.Conservative.

  • 24、Year-round Schooling

Traditional schools in America operate on a 9-month system, but today many people prefer year-round schooling.

Students in year-round schools attend school the same number of days as students in traditional nine-month schools. 【1】 Instead of the traditional nine months of school and a long, three-month summer vacation, the students have several short breaks between sessions all through the year. Another difference is the track. Instead of single-track schooling that involves an entire school using the same schedule and getting the same vacations off, multiple-track year-round schooling has groups of students attending school at different times with different vacations. 【2】

The major advantage of year-round schooling is that it provides the continuous learning that can be lost over a long vacation as the students are not ever out of school for a long period of time. 【3】

【4】For example, with one group of students always on vacation, a school that was built for 750 students can serve as many as 1,000. This lets school districts with little or no money for building new schools handle a growing student population and save millions of dollars in construction costs.

Overall, people generally have positive attitudes toward year-round schooling. Disadvantages include the inconvenience to families with children in both traditional and year-round schools. 【5】 And some people say it interferes with activities that take place outside school-including summer employment.

A.Thus there is always one group of students on vacation.

B.For example, it makes it difficult to make vacation plans.

C.Another advantage of year-round schooling is that it saves money for students.

D.What’s different about year-round schools is that the days are arranged differently.

E.In addition, year-round schooling is often chosen as a cost-cutting measure.

F.That is why many families accept both kinds of schooling.

G.As a result, the students forget less of what they learned over the shorter breaks.

Their daughter, Priya, was a Class X student in Saint Anne's School around six kilometers away. There was a direct bus from Priya's school.

“She should have been here by 4.30. It is 5:30 now and she still has not come,"Sharada replied."Yesterday too she was late. In fact, since the last few weeks she has been coming home late."

“Surya, you should not take it so lightly. I have an idea. My brother, Ajay, works in a Detective Agency. I will tell him. I am sure he will agree to follow her. Since Priya does not know him, she will not get suspicious.”

Surya kept silent for a while, finally agreed.

On Wednesday, Surya got a call in the office.

    “Hello! Surya? This is Ajay?”

    “Yes, Ajay. Any news?”

“Plenty. Can you come to Arts College at 4.30 in the evening?”

    “Why?”

“I will explain when we meet.”

Sharp at 4.30, Surya parked his scooter in front of the Arts College Building. Ajay was waiting for him. “Come with me, “he said. They went behind the building and took a path which led to a small Hanuman Temple.
