26、 The American self-image is spread with the golden glow of opportunity. We think of the United States as a land of unlimited possibility, not so much a classless society but as a place where class is changeable. However, we are not who we think we are.
The Economic Mobility Project, an ambitious research led by Pew Charitable Trusts, looked at the economic fortunes of a large group of families over time, comparing the income of parents in the late 1960s with the income of their children in the late 1990s and early 2010s. Here is the finding: The "rags to riches" story is much more common in Hollywood than on Main Street. Only 6 percent of children born to parents with family income at the very bottom move to the top. Meanwhile, an incredible 42 percent of children born into that lowest are still stuck at the bottom, having been unable to climb a single rung (梯级) of the income ladder.
It is noted that even in Britain -- a nation we think of as burdened with a hidebound(顽固的,死板的) class system--children who are born poor have a better chance of moving up. When the studies were released, most reporters focused on the finding that African-Americans born to middle-class or upper middle-class families are earning slightly less, in inflation-adjusted(扣除通胀后的) dollars, than did their parents.
One of the studies indicates, in fact, that most of the financial gains white families have made in the past three decades can be attributed to(归功于) the entry of white women into the labor force. This is much less true for African-Americans.
According to one of the studies, the rich have seen far greater income gains than have the poor. Even more troubling is that our nation of America as the land of opportunity gets little support from the data. Americans move fairly easily up and down the middle rungs(横档) of the ladder, but there is "stickiness at the ends" -- four out of ten children who are born poor will remain poor, and four out of ten who are born rich will stay rich.
【1】What did the Economic Mobility Project find in its research?
A.Children from low-income families are unable to move up to the top.
B.Hollywood actors and actresses can get rich easily.
C.The rags to riches story is more fiction than reality.
D.The rags to riches story is only true for a small minority of whites.

27、 Completely avoiding the problem of supply shortages of things like hand sanitizer (消毒剂), a robot has been developed to kill viruses, bacteria, and other harmful germs from hospital floors and other surfaces. Sweetly named Robot Violet, it is proven to kill viruses—and can sanitize an entire hospital room in half the time it would take to do the same task using conventional “deep cleaning” approaches.
The long tube-like light looks like one you might see in a factory, but it floats around the room. Violet’s powers come from ultraviolet (紫外线的) rays shot at very short wavelengths. These break down the DNA in germs and stop them from being able to reproduce and can arrest the spread of germs, ideally including COVID-19, though they are still waiting for test results for the virus to see if the robot can officially be relied upon to remove it.
Many surfaces of various hospital equipment need to be washed by hand. Inventor Connor says his robot would greatly improve this cleaning process, allowing hospitals that are packed with patients to clean rooms and equipment without any human being present. “This system could reduce dependency on the use of chemical-based solutions, which may be effective but requires rooms to be emptied for several hours during sanitization, making them impractical for many parts of the hospital,” Connor said.
Ultraviolet rays are damaging to humans, so they cannot be used to sanitize hands or other areas of skin. To avoid unnecessary harm, an AI system automatically shuts off ultraviolet light if it finds that someone has moved in front of it. The team hopes to produce 50 units in the coming weeks—with their first robot possibly ready for duty by Easter.
If COVID-19 spreads like wildfire, hospitals will need all the innovations like this to prevent it. “We are very happy with the progress we are making,” Connor added.
【1】The Robot Violet is designed to_____________.
A.solve the problem of labor force shortage
B.prevent the global spread of COVID-19
C.kill viruses in hospitals more efficiently
D.avoid people being infected with viruses
【2】How does conventional sanitization kill viruses?
A.By using chemical sanitizer.
B.By sending out ultraviolet rays.
C.By giving off short waves.
D.By keeping the rooms empty.
【3】What is the text mainly about?

B.Doctors use new equipment to fight against COVID-19.
C.Medical Al system is making rapid and steady progress.
D.New robots with ultraviolet light are used to kill viruses.
28、 Dannis was waiting at the airline ticket counter when he first noticed the young woman with shiny black hair pulled tightly into a knot. She wore black boots of soft leather. Dannis struggled to see her face, she was ahead of him in line, but it was not until she bought her ticket and turned to walk away that he realized her beauty, which was fair-skinned and big-eyed. She seemed aware that he was staring at her and lowered her gaze abruptly.
When next he saw her, Dannis was buying a magazine and became aware someone was pushing him. At first, he was startled (受惊吓的) that anyone would be so close as to touch him, but when he saw who it was, he smiled.
“Busy place,” Dannis said.
She looked up at him and blushed. Wordlessly, she moved away and joined the crowds in the terminal.
Dannis was at the counter with his magazine, but when he reached into his pocket for his wallet, the pocket was empty. Where could I have left it? His mind was racing, the credit cards, the cash, the identification card... “The girl who was so near to me!” he said to himself. All at once he understood she had stolen his pocket. What shall he do?
Dannis gritted his teeth. When glancing around for the police, suddenly, he spotted the black-haired girl, seated against a front window of the terminal. She seemed absorbed in a book.
“Where is my wallet?” he yelled. The black-haired girl glanced up from her reading, with a confused look on her face. Dannis glared at her and shouted, “You stole my wallet!” The crowds began to gossip. The girl turned deadly pale, looking so restless that words failed her. A strange silence hung in the air. Abruptly, she leaped from the seat and tried to escape from the crowds.
Dannis grabbed her by the arm. At exactly that moment, a policeman approached them and asked about what happened. Dannis hastened to explain it while the girl frowned with a shake of her head. After further enquiries, the policeman took out a wallet and handed it to Dannis, adding that someone had found it in the toilet.
【1】While waiting at the airline ticket counter, why did Dannis stare at the black-haired girl?
A.He suspected that she was a thief. B.He was attracted by her.

29、 The ocean bottom, a region nearly 2.5 times greater than the total land area of the earth, is even today largely unexplored. Until about a century ago, the deep ocean floor was completely inaccessible and hidden beneath waters averaging over 3,600 meters deep. Totally without light and in the case of intense pressures hundreds of times greater than at the earth’s surface, the deep-ocean bottom is a strange environment to humans, in some way, as fighting and remote as the outer space.
Although researchers have taken samples of deep-ocean rocks for over a century, the first detailed global study of the ocean bottom did not actually start until 1969, with the beginning of the National Science Foundation’s Deep Sea Drilling Project(DSDP). Using techniques first developed for the offshore oil and gas industry, the DSDP’s drill ship, the Glomar Challenger, was able to maintain a steady position on the ocean’s surface and drill very deep waters, taking samples of rocks from the ocean floor.
The Glomar Challenger completed 96 voyages in a 15-year research program that ended in November 1983. During this time, it sailed 600,000 kilometers and took almost 20,000 samples of rocks around the world. Those samples have allowed geologists to reconstruct what the planet looked like hundreds of millions of years ago and to make out what it will probably look like millions of years in the future. Today, largely on the strength of evidence gathered during the Glomar Challenger’s voyages, nearly all earth scientists agree on the theories of plate tectonics (构造学) and continental drift that explain many of the geological processes.
The sample of rocks drilled by the Glomar Challenger has also provided a climatic record stretching back hundreds of millions of years. The information of past climatic change can be used to predict the future climate.

【3】What can we know about the Glomar Challenger?
A. It provided a record of past climatic change.
B. It took almost 600,000 samples of rocks
C. It made its first DSDP voyage in 1968.
D. It has gone on over 100 voyages.

The technology could change our lives in significant ways. These devices, due to their 【4】 screens, give us the larger screens we want. Meanwhile, they still fit easily into the pocket. As USA Today noted, they’re “the 【5】 of a small tablets and smart-phone, all in a single device”.
The technology could 【6】 other devices too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers. In crowded modem cities, they will help us to 【7】 available space.
In a keynote address, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison, called the fold-able screen “the 【8】 for the smart-phone of tomorrow.” “It’s a balank canvas for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.
So is there nothing to stand in the way of the fold-able future?
According to tech news website Android authority, the necessary displays were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out of every to OLED screens produced were 【9】. Today, that 10 percent rate has been improved to between 50 and 90 percent. However, at present these fold-able devices are expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17,500 RMB. That’s a price that may 【10】 the majority of people.
But if the fold-able device isn’t going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that it is coming.
Patrick Moor-head, an industry analyst told The Verge, “Few are debating if fold-able or roll-able mobile displays are the future of smart-phones; the only question is when and by whom.”
