21、March 3 is World Wildlife Day, an opportunity to celebrate the wonderful diversity of plants and animals on earth. This day also marks the 50th anniversary of an international agreement between governments to ensure the trading of wild animals and plants—which is estimated to be worth billions of US dollars globally—doesn’t threaten species’ survival.
The voluntary deal, called the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora(CITES), provides varying degrees of protection to more than 37,000 species globally. The text of the convention was agreed at a meeting on March 3,1973 and it came into force in 1975. It provides a framework for 184 participants to ensure sustain-able trading of wild species for products such as food, fur and medicines.
“Without CITES, we’d lack a vital mechanism to turn off the ever-flowing and sorrowful deal of species driven by market demand,” said Abigail Entwistle at conservation charity in a press release.
The mountain gorilla is one species benefiting from a total trade ban under CITES in partner ship with this charity. Since this began, the population size has risen fourfold to more than 1,000 individuals. The pygmy hippos(侏儒河马)are also protected by CITES. They are found in the forests and swamps of West Africa, with most living in Liberia. Recently, conservationists have confirmed that pygmy hippos have a wider distribution than previously thought.
Grenadines pink rhino iguana(犀牛鬣蜥)is a striking species, which is threatened by hunting, because it still lacks CITES protection. Since 2016, the charity has been working with local and international partners to protect this species. The important point is that it works. The charity says“a CITES listing would be the logical next step”to better protect its survival.

22、Surfing: Famous Beaches, Famous Waves
North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii: Famous for being the birthplace of surfing
Wide, sandy beaches stretch nearly 20 miles along the Pacific Ocean. Between December and February, this surfing destination is suitable only for experienced surfers, as its big waves can reach 30 feet. In summer, the ocean can be almost completely flat, making it perfect for swimming.
Huntington Beach, California: Famous for the US Open of Surfing competition
This busy 8.5-mile-long beach attracts 8 million visitors a year for bodysurfing, boogie boarding (趴板冲浪), and board surfing at every level, beginner to expert. At night, the beach’s fire pits (深坑) draw families as much as the waves do during the day. The best time for surfers is winter, when the swells can hit 15 feet.
Jeffreys Bay, South Africa: Famous for being the setting of the classic movie The Endless Summer
This area of the ocean may contain the most consistent waves on the planet, with some up to 10 feet. The best waves are between late May and late August. The beach sometimes closes because of sharks, but at other times, surfers are lucky enough to surf alongside dolphins.
Tamarindo, Costa Rica: Famous for being featured in the movie The Endless Summer Ⅱ
This beach has waves up to 12 feet high, which are good for long-boarders or short-boarders, beginners or experts, with the best waves from April to July. 23、 Cats don't avoid people who upset their owners, proving they're just as disloyal as we always suspected, a new study confirms. The study will be a blow to enthusiastic cat lovers across the country, as their kitty friends appear to have lived up to their reputation of being aloof and uncaring. But dog owners can cheer that man's best friend still has their back.
Having previously showed that dogs avoided a person who behaved negatively towards their owner, researchers tried the same experiment with cats to see how they reacted. For the study, cats watched as their owner tried unsuccessfully to open a transparent container to take out an object, and then requested help from a person sitting nearby. Some people helped the pet owner and others didn't, before they all offered food to the animals.
In the dog experiment, most dogs preferred not to take food from people who didn't help their owners. But cats weren't phased and showed no preference between helpers and passive bystanders, eating food from whoever offered it.
The study's 'lead author Hitomi Chijiiwa wrote: “One possible reason for domestic cats showing no sign of a negativity bias(偏见) might be that cooperation is not typical of this species. Whereas dogs are known to cooperate with humans and conspecifics(同类) in various real and experimental contexts, the same is not true of cats. Domestic cats originated from a less sociable ancestor than did dogs, and they have not been subjected to artificial selection for cooperation with humans. However, group hunting did not evolve in small cats, because the size of their typical prey items remained unchanged even as cat communities grew bigger."
“Thus, cats can be considered as at least potentially 'social' and 'flexible' in terms of social structure, but not 'cooperative'. The ability to evaluate others based on indirect experiences might be restricted to more cooperative species.”
【1】What does the underlined word “aloof” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Distant
B.Aggressive
C.Sensitive
D.Greedy.
【2】How do cats differ from dogs in the experiment?
A.They tend to show no preference for food.
B.They are likely to wait for food without doing anything.
C.They refuse to eat food from those offending their owners.
D.They don't care about food givers' attitude to their owners.
【3】What can we learn about cats from the last two paragraphs?
A.They originated from a less flexible ancestor.
B.They lack the ability to directly evaluate others.
C.They haven't been trained since their domestication.
D.They haven't evolved through cooperation with humans.
【4】How does the author illustrate his idea in the whole passage?
A.By referring to previous findings.
B.By giving examples.
C.By analyzing cause and effect
D.By explaining a concept.
24、Critical reading is active reading. It involves more than just understanding what an author is saying. Critical reading involves questioning and evaluating what the author is saying and forming your own opinions. 【1】
● Consider the context of what is written.
You may be reading something that was written by an author from a different cultural context than yours. Or, you may be reading something written some time ago in a different time context than yours. In either case, you must recognize and take into account any differences between your values and attitudes and those represented by the author.
● 【2】
Don’t accept what is written at face value. Before accepting what is written, be certain that the author provides sufficient support for any statements made. Look for facts, examples, and statistics that provide support. Also, look to see if the author has integrated the work of authorities.
● Analyze assumptions made by the author.
Assumptions are whatever the author must believe is true in order to make statements. 【3】 This means you must read carefully in order to identify any assumptions. Once you identify an assumption, you must decide whether or not the assumption is valid.
● 【4】
In doing this, be certain that the sources are reliable. For example, Einstein is a reliable source if the author is writing about landmark achievements in physics. 【5】 Einstein is not a relevant source when the subject is poetry. Finally if the author is writing about a subject in its current state, be sure that the sources are current. For example, studies done by Einstein in the early 20th century may not be appropriate if the writer is discussing the current state of knowledge in physics.
A.Evaluate the sources the author uses.
B.Question statements made by the author.
C.Also be certain that the sources are relevant.
D.Identify any possible prejudice the author has.
E.Here are the things you should do to be a critical reader.
F.The reasons why you should be a critical reader are as follows.
G.In many cases, the author’s assumptions are not directly stated.
