  • 21、 It was time for Mr. Rocco to shut up shop when I hurried into the florist’s. “Now, what is it that you want?” Mr. Rocco turned to me. “I want the most beautiful flower you have.” I replied, “And just how much do you have to pay for this most beautiful flower?” I held out a wet hand showing a quarter and dime. He nodded, and then showed me a plant on the counter “I can give you this one for 35 cents.” he said,“ Aw, gee,” I protested, “it looks like a weed!” About l 8 inches high, the plant was in a small pot covered with faded red paper.“ Now trust me, boy---I promise that tomorrow morning when you get up, you will find your most beautiful flower. ”said Mr. Rocco. I knew him to be a good honest man, so I agreed to take it.

It was almost midnight when I arrived home. Mom was seriously sick and using the front bedroom. I looked in to see if she was asleep, and then quietly tiptoed in and set the plant on the table beside her bed. I wanted her to be surprised when she woke on Mother’s Day. The next morning, I dressed and hurried downstairs. The sun was shining through kitchen window as I looked into Mom’s room. She motioned for me to come in, then glanced over at the table where the plant was. Holy mackerel! There were three big yellow trumpet-shaped blooms. It was just like Mr. Rocco said---the most beautiful flower I ever saw! When I looked at Mom, she was smiling as tears streamed down her cheeks. She held out her hand for me to come near, then pulled me close and hugged till it hurt. Then, remembering her contagious condition and that she wasn’t supposed to touch me, she quickly let me go.

  • 22、As we neared the last days of my mom' s life, I wanted to understand what she was feeling

and seeing.   The day before she took her last breath I decided to ask her.

First I wanted to make sure she could make sense of what I was saying. I told her that loved her, and she raised her eyebrows in acknowledgement.   Then I shared a funny story about a conversation my husband and I had. The corners of her mouth turned up in a smile. I could tell that she was taking in every word. And then I went for it.

"Rom, can I ask you a serious question?" She turned her head and opened her eyes fully. I could tell she wanted to grasp every word that came out of my mouth.

"Rom, do you see any of our dead relatives in the room? Do you see your dad?" She shook her head.

“Do you see your mom?"   She shook her head again.

“Do you see Dad?" Her response was quite different this time. She began nodding her head.

“Is he here in this room right now:?" She nodded. “Can he see me?" She nodded again. Then she tried to communicate with words, but she couldn't get the words out. The next morning she died peacefully.

A few weeks ago, I was wondering why I haven't had many dreams of my mom since she

died. That night I had one of the clearest dreams I've had for a long time.   Mom was dressed

beautifully.   She stared at me with a huge smile. Her eyes were bright and full of life. She was

happier than I had seen her in years.   And she was younger. We didn't exchange any words, but it was clear that she was happy and free.

I woke up with joy in my heart.

  • 23、On Tuesday, scientists announced that they have discovered the bones of four settlers in Jamestown, Virginia. Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in what become the United States. The bones were unearthed under the floor of a Jamestown church which was discovered in 2010 and is considered as America’s first Protestant church.

The Jamestown Rediscovery Foundation at Historic Jamestowne and the Smithsonian’s Museum of Natural History announced that the settlers held high leadership positions. The men, Rev.Robert Hunt,Capt. Gabriel Archer,Sir Ferdinando Wainman, and Capt. William West, all played a role in the Jamestown settlement. After being lost to history for more than 400 years, the discovery of their remains provides new clues about their life and the importance of religion in the 1600s.

“This is a very important discovery,” Jamestown Rediscovery Foundation President James Horn said in a statement. “These men were among the first founders of English America."

About 100 people settled along the James River in what would become the first English settlement m 1607. During that time, settlers in Jamestown were faced with famine and disease. The colony was nearly wiped out due to conflict with Native Americans in the area and with other English settlers.

“They lived and died at a hard time in the history of the settlement , when Jamestown almost ended in  failure,” Horn said. “The bones of these men help fill in the stories of their lives ”

The Smithsonian and the Rediscovery Foundation found the remains in November of 2013. Scientists used 3-D technology to locate the exact gravesites of the men. The team wanted to identify its findings before announcing the discovery. They identified the men using historical records and studied the chemicals of the bones to learn what the men ate and where they came from.

  • 24、A study conducted by the Irish government reveals that up to one in three children are consuming caffeinated (含咖啡因的) energy drinks, with frequent consumption associated with a range of health and behaviour problems.

The BMJ Open paper, which analyzed previous data sets, found that between 3 percent and 32 percent of under-18s consumed the drinks at least once a week. Those who consumed the soft drinks five times a week were more likely to report headaches, sleep problems, alcohol use, smoking, irritability, and school exclusion.

In 2019, the government announced it would ban the sale of energy drinks to under-16s, but the rule never took effect.

Lead author of the paper, Claire Khouja, from the University of York, said, “While more research is needed to track the effects of energy drinks on children who drink them, our research has uncovered consistent evidence of links between the regular consumption of these drinks and harmful effects on children’s overall well-being. These findings offer support fora government policy banning the sale of energy drinks to children.”

While caffeine can be beneficial, it does have some downsides, particularly for children. “If you take too much caffeine on a regular basis you get used to it and then on withdrawal you can get a headache-that’s a known phenomenon,” says Claire. “And if you have caffeine before bedtime, a certain group of the population are likely to suffer from insomnia (失眠) as a result. The effect is usually greater on children of a light body weight and young people.”

Energy drinks can also become addictive for children and they “contain large amounts of sugar which are not necessary for that age group,” Claire warns. “That’s easily going to contribute to the problems we already have with children and obesity, diabetes and attention deficit disorder.”

【1】What are the paper’s results based on?

    A.Personal medical records.

    B.Interviews with teenagers.

    C.Analyses of former data sets.

    D.Data collected by the government.

【2】What has Claire’s research found about the regular consumption of energy drinks?

    A.Its consistent effects on children.

B.The urgency and necessity to ban it.

C.The reasons for its harmful effects on health.

D.Its connection with bad effects on children’s health.

【3】Who will be the most affected by the caffeine?

    A.A light college senior.

    B.A thin high school student.

    C.A heavy middle-aged man.

    D.A strong gymnastic athlete.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.Energy drinks may affect children’s health.

B.Energy drinks should be banned in Ireland.

C.Energy drinks become addictive for children.

D.Caffeine ought to be removed from energy drinks.

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main points of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own word as far as possible.

Cooperative learning May Change Your Mind about Group Work

Two heads are better than one. It means that two people working together have a better chance of solving a problem than one person alone. But not everyone likes working with others   ---especially when that means working in a group.

There can be a number of reasons why people dislike group work. Some may feel nervous or uneasy in group situations. Others might have had a bad experience with individuals who did not work well as a team. Another criticism is that teachers or supervisors fail to assign roles to group members. This may create a situation where everyone or no one wants to lead. Whatever the issue, the result is the same: the group does not realize its goal.

Cooperative learning is an educational method that can help to solve this problem. There are many methods of cooperative learning. One of them is to each person in a small group a specific duty to reach a shared goal. For example, if learners are divided into groups of four people each, their roles might be: leader, writer, checker and speaker. The “writer writes down important information from the task. They may also write down the ideas for the speaker to present This structure helps ensure everyone takes part equally in group work. lt also allows each member to play a meaningful part in completing the shared goal.

Retired educator Michelle Manville has written several books about education and learning standards. Many of her books note that cooperative learning creates a supportive group structure and lessens the problem of competitiveness. Studies have also shown that cooperative learning improves learner achievement. This includes one study by American researcher Robert Slavin.
