二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Nashville, Tennessee is already known to many Americans as Music City, which is famous for country music in the United States and is home to many recording companies. But recently, music recorded for video games, television shows and movies has earned Nashville a new name: Soundtrack(原声音乐)City.

The city is known for very good studio musicians. They work mostly on recordings rather than live performances. Musicians in Nashville have helped to make the soundtracks for some of the most popular video games in the US. These include "Madden", "FIFA", "Call of Duty" and "Star Wars".

Also, more production companies have been bringing their film and TV soundtrack recordings to Nashville, including Netflix, Sony and Focus Features. A program the state of Tennessee established last year gives financial support to companies for doing business in the city.

"Nashville has become one of the major places in the world to record for films, games and television," Steve Schnur told the Associated Press. He is president of music for Electronic Arts (EA), a video game company. In the past, Schnur worked for MTV and music production companies such as Arista. He also worked as a music supervisor on films before joining EA. For a long time, EA recorded soundtracks for their games with orchestras, or large groups of musicians, in Los Angeles, London and Eastern Europe. That changed about seven years ago when Schnur came to Nashville to record music for a game called "Dragon Age Inquisition".

"I work with the musicians in Nashville now. They are both fast and skilled," Schnur added. This proved true even on complex songs written by well-known composers such as Hans Zimmer, Lorne Balfe, Jeff Russo and John Debney. The music of video games is often very important to the gameplay in creating both emotion and attachment to the storyline. Kris Bowers is the remarkable composer behind the award-winning film "Green Book". He came to Ocean Way Nashville Recording Studios and successfully recorded the soundtrack for "Madden NFL 20".

【1】What makes Nashville called Soundtrack City?

    A.The achievement in soundtrack.

B.The increase in live music performance.

    C.The film production.

    D.The record of country music.

【2】Which of the following is a film and television production company?

    A.Ocean Way.

    B.Call of Duty.

    C.Netflix.

    D.EA.

    【3】What does Schnur do now?

A.He is a musician from Los Angeles.

B.He is president of the Associated Press.

C.He is a music supervisor on films in Arista.

D.He is a leader recording music for video games in EA.

【4】Why does the author mention Kris Bowers in the last paragraph?

A.To show the popularity of folk music.

B.To attach importance to video games.

    C.To introduce his award-winning film.

    D.To stress Nashville's musical success.

  • 27、   Islands in the world are famous for different things. But Hawaii is special for its variety of features. Beautiful sandy beaches, active volcanoes (火山),a great canyon (溪谷) and special history and culture add up to create its famously romantic atmosphere.

Formed by volcanoes at the bottom of the sea, the Hawaii islands are like a necklace in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, 6,000 kilometers off the west coast of Mexico. There are eight main islands in the group, including Hawaii (or Big Island), Maui, Kahoolawe, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau.

The youngest and biggest island, also called Hawaii was formed 430,000 years ago and is still growing. Kauai, the oldest was formed 5.1 million years ago. For tourists, the sight of the lava (溶岩) that still flows from some of the volcanoes down to the sea, is a major attraction.

Hawaii is the newest and smallest state in the US. In 1900, the islands joined the US. In modem history, it will always be remembered for the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese air force in 1941.

About 1,000 years ago, the islands were settled by Polynesians (波利尼西亚人), Captain James Cook led the first group of Westerners there in 1778.

Native Hawaiians have a special culture and language. Although nowadays English is the official language of Hawaii, folk music and dancing are still widely practiced. The traditional dance of the islands is the hula, a Hawaiian word that means dance.

Hawaii's reputation for romance was spread when Hollywood started to use its typical music in movies in the 1960's.

Today, Hawaii is famous for its mix of cultures. Chinese, Japanese and Filipinos all live there.Chinese arrived in the islands as early as the late 18th century. Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the famous Chinese revolutionary, grew up there.

Everyone in Hawaii is a member of an ethnic minority (少数民方矣) and generally they exist in a pleasant harmony (和谐)of races and cultures.

  • 28、   If you’re looking for a reason to care about tree loss, this summer’s record-breaking heat waves might be it. Trees can lower summer daytime temperatures by as much as 10 degrees Fahrenheit, according to a recent study. But tree cover in US cities is shrinking (缩减). A study published last year by the US Forest Service found that we lost 36 million trees annually from urban and rural communities over a five-year period. “If we continue on this path, cities will become warmer, more polluted and generally unhealthier for inhabitants,” said David Nowak, a senior US Forest Service scientist and co-author of the study. Nowak says there are many reasons why our tree cover is declining, including hurricanes, tornadoes, fires, insects and disease. But the one reason for tree loss that humans can control is sensible development.

Nowak says there is a downside to trees too, such as pollen allergy (花粉过敏) or large tailing branches in storms, and people don’t like sweeping leaves. But, he says, there are ways cities and counties can manage trees to help communities thrive (繁荣). Urban forests especially need our help to replace fallen trees. Unlike rural areas, it is very difficult for trees to repopulate themselves in a city environment with so much pavement and asphalt (沥青). “A lot of our native trees can’t actually find a place to drop a seed so they can regenerate,” explains Greg Levine, co-executive director of Trees Atlanta. “That’s why the community has to go in and actually plant a tree because the areas just aren’t natural anymore.”

Nowak says the first step is caring for the trees on your own property (财产). “We think we pay for our house, and so we must maintain it. But because we don’t pay for nature, we don’t need to. And that’s not necessarily true.”

【1】Why does the author mention “trees can lower summer daytime temperatures”?

A.To tell the temperatures in summer are high.

B.To explain the reason of tree loss.

    C.To tell trees are helpful.

    D.To introduce the topic.

【2】How can humans control tree loss according to Nowak?

    A.Develop cities in reasonable ways.

    B.Prevent fires form damaging trees.

C.Improve climate to let trees grow.

    D.Decrease insects in cities.

【3】Why do forests in cities need our help?

A.Because trees don’t grow in a city environment.

B.Because native trees don’t drop seeds any more.

C.Because trees in urban areas can’t regenerate naturally.

D.Because humans want to plant more trees.

【4】What is the purpose of this passage?

A.Describe the importance of trees in cities.

B.Appeal people to protect trees in their surroundings.

C.Ask people to plant trees with the author.

D.Show the number of trees in the US is declining.

  • 29、We often relate giant solar panels to deserts. But the extreme heat can limit solar panels’ productivity. “It’s like your laptop or your home computer. If it overheats, it slows down. So there’s this tradeoff between having a lot, a lot of sun like in a desert, but if it gets too hot the efficiency of those panels drops.” said Oregon State University ecological engineer Chad Higgins.

His team is interested in where photovoltaic panels should be placed to maximize energy production. In addition to moderate temperatures and sunlight, they found that conditions for the most efficiency include low relative humidity and gentle winds that improve transfer of heat from the panels.

By analyzing satellite data for these four factors, they created a map of possible solar panel productivity for different land types around the globe. Which one is on top? Croplands. It’s a sweet spot where you get a lot of sun but it has a pleasant temperature and that is where you get the most productivity.

Other factors also favor cropland solar. Croplands are often closer to population centers where there is a market for electricity, rather than way off in the desert. Croplands are usually flat and already disturbed. So you don’t have as many ecological protection worries.

Higgins’ team thinks that agriculture and solar can benefit each other, leading to a more sustainable energy future. Higgins hopes the research will help solar companies and farmers work together to feed the world and power it too. A possibility that should brighten anyone’s day.

【1】What limits the efficiency of the solar panels built in deserts?

    A.The high temperature.

    B.Long distance of transferring.

    C.Lack of computer control.

D.The quality of the solar panels.

【2】What does the underlined word “moderate” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.High.

    B.Normal.

    C.Low.

    D.Suitable.

【3】What’s one of the benefits of building solar panels in croplands?

    A.It makes croplands flat.

B.It builds a market for electricity.

    C.It causes less environment concern.

D.It leads to more crop production.

【4】What’s the suitable title of the text?

    A.Locations for Photovoltaic Panels

B.Croplands—a Sweet Place for Solar Panels

C.Factors in Maximum Productivity of Solar Panels

D.Connection between Solar Companies and Farmers
