二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、With fast fashion being more popular than ever, cloth mending isn’t nearly as necessary as it once was. Got a tear in one of your socks? Just throw it and get a new pair. The same goes for any other clothes, so cloth mending is slowly gone. But what about something truly special and dear to your hearts? You can’t just go out and change something of feeling value, but you can’t wear it with a hole in it either. That’s where the magical art of kaketsugi comes in. It’s really an unbelievable technique(技术).

Kaketsugi is a hard process that begins with cutting a small piece of cloth from inside the clothing, where its absence will not be noticed. This piece is then brushed with acetone, which makes cutting single threads(线) a bit easier.

Cutting the piece of cloth down to single threads is probably the hardest part of kaketsugi, but people who are good at this skill say that using the same cloth as the one that the clothing is made of is key to making the mending truly unseen in the end. The newly-gotten threads are then carefully sewn(缝) over the hole or broken area of the clothing, from different directions, and from both sides of the cloth. Once the sewing process is complete, the leftover threads are used to mask the breakdown even more. Finally, the area repaired with kaketsugi is ironed out(熨平). That helps smooth everything out and at this point, it’s almost impossible to see where the hole was in the first place. The clothing looks fire-new.

Interestingly, unseen mending works just as well on small holes of just a few millimeters, as it does on large ones of over 3 centimeters. It’s just that a large broken area will take more time to fix, so the larger the hole is, the more expensive the repairs are.

Kaketsugi may seem expensive, but keep in mind that it is usually kept for special clothing with feeling or historical value. Also, the work and time that goes into it is certainly worth it.

【1】What is the purpose of paragraph 1?

A.To introduce the topic of the text.

    B.To improve a useless technique.

    C.To change people’s values.

    D.To show a new fashion.

【2】What is the key to making the clothing new?

    A.Using the same cloth.

    B.Picking special threads.

    C.Sewing from both sides.

    D.Ironing the mended area.

【3】Which word can best describe the author’s attitude to kaketsugi?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Confused.

    C.Uncaring.

    D.Supportive.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.The Magic of Special Clothing

    B.A Missing Cloth Mending Technique

    C.An Excellent Cloth Mending Technique

D.The Fast Fashion Being More Popular

  • 22、Located in the Bahamas, Andros Island is also known as “The Sleeping Giant”,yet with only about 8.000 people living on it. Now the island has a new luxury resort Caerula Mar Club- which opened this February. The once-abandoned property was discovered by a well- known HGTV reality star couple who transformed it into a hotel. The Canadian design duo Bryan and Sarah Baeumler were vacationing in the Bahamas in the summer of 2017 when they discovered a once-abandoned resort. They instantly decided to purchase it with hopes to transform the 10-acre beachfront property into a luxury hotel.

However, they had no idea how much the investment would end up costing them. Here most supplies had to be shipped in, and the property was in bad shape. The budget for the remodelling should be around $ 4 million, but they've spent well over $ 10 million. What's worse, in the fall of 2019, category 5 Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas, and their employees and friends were affected.

Finally, several months later, as they prepared to open the resort to the public, the Coronavirus pandemic (大流行病)struck. They'd just been fully booked throughout the fall and winter months when the new disaster stopped everything as the Bahamas were put on lockdown.

With tourism opening up again, new plans are now for an October launch, but they're just taking things one day at a time. "I think at the end of this pandemic, well find many people are searching for a different experience,” says Bryan. "Instead of crowding into large resorts, they'll be going to properties where they can meet people, connect with the locals and experience nature. Our hotel is just such a place.”

  • 23、Songs that make our hearts happy can make them stronger too, US researchers reported on Tuesday.

They found that when people listened to their favorite music, their blood vessels (血管) dilated in much the same way as when they are laughing, or taking blood medications.

"We have a pretty impressive effect," said Dr Michael Miller, director of preventive cardiology (心脏病学) at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

"Blood vessel diameter improved," he said. "The vessel opened up pretty significantly. You can see the vessels opening up with other activities such as exercise." A similar effect is seen with drugs such as statins.

When blood vessels open up more, blood flows more smoothly and is less likely to form the clots (凝块) that cause heart attacks and strokes. "We are not saying to stop your statins or not to exercise but rather to add this to an overall program of heart health," said Miller, who presented his findings to a meeting of the American Heart Association in New Orleans.

Miller's team tested 10 healthy, non-smoking men and women, who were told to bring their favorite music. They spent half an hour listening to the recordings and half an hour listening to music they said made them feel anxious while the researchers did ultrasound tests designed to show blood vessel function.

Compared to their normal baseline measurements, blood vessel diameter increased 26 percent on average when the volunteers heard their joyful music. Listening to music they disliked — in most cases in this group heavy metal — blood vessels narrowed by six percent, Miller said.

Miller said he came up with the idea after discovering that laughter caused blood to literally flow more smoothly. "I asked myself what other things make us feel really good, besides calories from dark chocolate of course. Music came to mind. ... It makes me feel really good," he said.

Most of the volunteers chose country music but Miller said the style is not so important rather than what pleases each individual.

  • 24、Professor Heinz Wolff, who has died aged 89, was a bioengineering pioneer. He established the discipline, named it and, in a 60-year career, made significant contributions to medical research. But to the British public, he was best known as the “dotty scientist” who fronted The Great Egg Race, a BBC show in which colour-coded teams were set engineering challenges (the first was to transport an egg in a vehicle powered by rubber bands). With his trademark bow tie, half-moon glasses and Mittel-European accent, he looked really like Professor Branestawn, as described by W. Heath Robinson. Yet while he cheerfully exploited his reputation as an “odd egghead”, he was very serious about his work and inspired thousands of young people to consider scientific careers.

Born in Berlin in 1928, Heinz Wolff was the son of Jewish parents. His mother died in 1938, and the next year the family fled. They arrived in Britain on the day war was declared. “We really cut it rather fine,” he said on Desert Island Discs in 1998.After leaving school, he worked as a technician at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford, where he invented a machine to count red blood cells, and then at the National Institute for Medical Research’s pneumoconiosis (尘肺) research unit in Cardiff, where he designed a means of measuring dust levels in coal miners. He went on to study at University College London and graduated with a first in physics and physiology. Then, in 1983, he founded the Institute for Bioengineering at Brunel University. His particular interest was in technologies to improve the lives of older people, but he was also heavily involved in space research and worked as an adviser to the European Space Agency.

Wolff had made his first appearance on TV on Panorama in 1966, encouraging Richard Dimbleby to swallow a “radio pill”. On The Great Egg Race, which ran from 1979, his task was to get opponent teams representing organizations such as the chemical company ICI. Challenges included building a hovercraft(气垫船) from a lawnmower(割草机), and inventing a bicycle that could ride on water. Marks were awarded for entertainment value and technical accomplishment. The show ended in the mid-l980s, but Wolff continued to judge scientific competitions, on TV and elsewhere. A natural entertainer with an inexhaustible curiosity about the world, he said he’d be happy to dress up as a clown if it got children interested in science.

【1】What does the underlined sentence “We really cut it rather fine” in paragraph 2 mean?

A.We fled from Germany in time.

B.We settled down at the cost of punishment.

C.We led a comfortable life in Britain.

A.He used to major in physics and physiology.

B.His family left Berlin after World War II began.

C.He invented a machine while in University College London.

D.His interest lay in helping those living in war-stricken areas.

【3】Heinz Wolff didn’t mind looking ridiculous as long as ________.

A.he could keep being curious about the world

B.he could combine entertainment and technology

C.he could help arouse children’s interest in science

D.he could appear on TV to judge scientific competitions

【4】Which of the following can best Heinz Wolff?

    A.Aggressive.

    B.Passionate.

    C.Optimistic.

    D.Pioneering.
