  • 23、One day last summer, watching the boys and girls trying to catch butterflies, I remembered something happened when I was young. When I was a boy of 12 in South Carolina, something happened to me that stopped me forever from wanting to put any wild creature in a cage.

We lived on the edge of a wood, and every evening the mockingbirds(模仿鸟) would come and rest in the trees and sings. 【1】   I decided that I would catch a young bird and keep it in a cage and in that way would have my own private musician.

2  At first, the bird flew about the cage, but eventually it settled down in its new home. I felt very pleased with myself and looked forward to some beautiful singing from my tiny musician.

I had left the cage out, and on the second day my new pet’s mother flew to the cage with food in her mouth. The baby bird ate everything she brought to it.  3

Certainly the mother knew better than I about how to feed her baby.

The following morning when I went to see how my bird was doing, I discovered it on the floor of the cage, dead. I was shocked! What had happened! 4

Arthur Wayne, the famous ornithologist(鸟学家), happened to be visiting my father at the time. Hearing me crying over the death of my bird, he explained what had occurred. “A mother mockingbird, finding her young in a cage, will sometimes bring it poisonous(有毒的)berries(干果).   5

Never since then have I caught any living creature and put it in a cage. All living creatures have a right to live free.

    A. I had taken good care of my little bird.

    B. I finally succeeded in catching one and put it in a cage.

    C. I was pleased to see this.

    D. No musician can sing more beautiful than the birds.

    E. She thinks it better for her young to die than to live in cage.

  • 24、When I began to move to Auckland to study the law, my mother was a little worried about the uncertainty of living in a place that was so different from India, where we lived. She worried about the shortage of jobs and the cultural differences that I would face.

I came to New Zealand in July 2013. I found the people were very nice and supportive. Soon after I arrived, I realized the importance of getting a part time job to make a living.

Deciding to do this on my own, I spent a whole day going from door to door for a job. However, I received a little or no reply. This became my daily activity after college for a few weeks.

One afternoon, I walked into a building to ask if there were any job chances. The people there were very surprised, and advised me not to continue my job search in that way. As I was about to leave, a secretary in the building came up to me and encouraged me to stay confident. He then offered to take me to the Royal Oak area to search for a job.

Along the way, I realized I had run out of copies of my resume (简历). The man stopped at his friend’s office to make me 15 extra copies. He also gave me tips on dressing and speaking. I handed out my resume and went home. The following day, I received a call from a store in Royal Oak offering me a job.

It seemed that the world always gives back to you when you need it. And this time, it was a complete stranger who turned out to be a real blessing (祝福).

【1】 The writer moved to Auckland to ______.

    A. avoid the job shortage

    B. face the cultural differences

    C. start his life in a new place

    D. study the law in college

    A. he needed to find a job to make a living

    B. people there were not very friendly

    C. he should always stay confident

    D. it was easy to get a new job

3What is the story mainly about?

    A. How a secretary offered the writer a job.

    B. How a secretary turned out to be a real hero.

    C. How a stranger helped the writer to get a job.

    D. How the writer made a living in a new country.

There are some computer programs out there for creating art, such as Photoshop or Microsoft Paint. But you probably wouldn't guess that Microsoft Excel is one of them.

For many of us, Excel is just a type of office software. But for Tatsuo Horiuchi, an 80-year-old Japanese man, it's his paints, his watercolors and his canvas (画布). About 20 years ago, shortly before retiring (退休), the artist decided that he needed a new challenge in his life. So he bought a computer and began making beautiful works of art with Excel.

"I never used Excel at work, but I saw other people using Excel to create pretty graphs. So I thought, 'I could probably draw with that,'" Horiuchi says. "Graphics software (制图软件) is expensive but Excel can store on most computers. What's more, it has more functions and is easier to use than Microsoft Paint."

Horiuchi also tried using Word but was limited (限制) to the paper sizing. There is far more freedom for the artist to produce his pieces in Excel. Horiuchi's colorful Excel art deeply describes that of traditional Japanese paintings. It often shows highly detailed sights, along with people, plants and animals.

"I set a goal," Horiuchi says, "that is, in 10 years, I would be able to paint something excellent that I could show to people." And he has certainly achieved that goal.

Since his discovery of Excel's artistic functions and his ability to use them, Horiuchi has got worldwide praise. He has gone on to win competitions with his work. Not surprisingly, he took first prize at the Excel Autoshape Art Contest in 2006. Having made quite a name for himself, the elderly Japanese artist was given a new name — the "Michelangelo of Excel."

1Horiuchi's new challenge is to ________ before retiring.

A.buy a computer for himself B.paint something with Photoshop

C.make beautiful art works with Excel D.collect more pictures with animals

2The word "It" in Paragraph 4 refers to ________.

    A.the computer B.the plant

C.the Japanese painting D.Horiuchi's Excel art

3The last paragraph is mainly about ________.

A.the artists Horiuchi has met B.the paintings Horiuchi has drawn

C.the discovery Horiuchi's has made D.the achievements Horiuchi has got

4We know from the passage that Horiuchi ________.

A.began drawing with Excel at the age of 80 B.had more freedom by trying using Word

C.became famous by sticking to his goal D.bought a computer with the prize he got

  • 26、In a class discussion not long ago, I asked my students the following question, “How long could you feel comfortable and right without food?” One student quickly answered, “About two hours.” The answer is true. For most of us, we begin to feel hungry in a few hours after each meal. We can’t imagine starting our day by waking up hungry, going all day without food and going to bed with even greater hunger.

The statistics (数据) on hunger in the United States are much surprising to all of us. According to Feeding America, “50,000,000 Americans don’t know where their next meal is coming from. That’s the number in one of the wealthiest nations on the planet. And one in four of these 50,000,000 people are children.”

No Kid Hungry surveyed more than 1,000 teachers and principals around the country and found that 73 percent of teachers said they regularly teach hungry students who don’t have enough food to eat at home, and 87 percent of principals said they often see hungry students in school. As a result of so many hungry students, teachers spend nearly $40 a month buying food for kids with their own money.

This is the time of the year when children do not have the benefit (好处) of school lunch programs. Here are some ways we can do to help change this situation: First, we can give money to the local food bank. Next, we can donate food in our local area. Third, we can volunteer our time at a local food bank. So, on our next visit to the grocery store, add an extra food idem that can be donated to a food bank. Don’t wait to make a difference in a child’s life.

1Which of the following is true?

    A. Many Americans don’t have enough food to eat.

    B. Most children in the US don’t want to eat breakfast.

    C. American children are in hunger right now.

    D. American schools don’t provide free breakfast.

2The writer’s purpose of writing this text is to ______.

    A. show the importance of school lunch programs

    B. ask us to make some changes for children’s food

    C. ask us to buy some more food when shopping next time

    D. ask us to do something for students’ lunch programs
