  • 22、   This may sound like a joke about a lazy person’s dream job. Earn big money by staying in bed and watching TV. But this is really happening, and it’s a project of NASA and two European space agencies the Institute of Aerospace Medicine at the Cologne-based German Aerospace Center and the European Space Agency. I’s called Artificial Gravity Bed Rest Study, aimed at studying how the body adapts to weightlessness in space.

Scientists are seeking 12 women to spend two full months in bed in the fall at a German lab, plus an additional month there for preparation and recovery, The first 12 test subjects, all men, already have started the study.

Participants spend two entire months in bed and remain lying down even to do everyday things like eating, drinking and exercising. They also answer nature’s call and shower, but it’s unclear from the NASA website how those tasks are accomplished in bed.

“Daily routine showering, getting dressed, eating, exercising takes much time when you cannot stand up to do them,” says the website, adding that there is “continuous data collection”, including blood pressure, heart rate, nutrient absorption and also the participants’ feelings. Study subjects will spend the 60 days with their heads tiled down six degrees, which imitates conditions in space.

Participants are encouraged to pass the time by watching TV, taking online courses, reading and any other activities they can perform while lying down alone in bed to relieve what could be boredom. Family and friends are allowed to visit.

The high $ 18,500 payment for two months of lazing about is probably a major motivation for people willing to go through something this extreme. However, if you’re an American who really needs the money, you probably can’t afford it. Candidates need to travel to Cologne four times at their own expense for the employment process between April and July. Plus, they need strong German-speaking skills Also participants need to be nonsmokers between ages 24 and 55, in good health, with normal body weight.

1What are participants expected to do during the study?

A.Report their feelings regularly. B.Complete their daily routines in bed.

C.Keep their bodies tilted down six degrees. D.Record their physical responses every day.

2What data about the participants will the researchers collect?

A.The changes in their weight. B.Their behaviors to weightlessness.

C.The ways they do their daily things D.Their physical and mental reactions

3What will be a challenge for the participants?

A.The language skills they need. B.The difficulty meeting family.

C.The possibility that they feel dull. D.The slow discovery of their health.

4The requirements for potential participants are__________.

A.challenging for Americans B.tailored to thin persons

C.easy for the youth to satisfy D.suitable for most people

  • 23、   Students should be able to show what they know. Many folks take this as a self-evident truth. But I think it demands closer examination.

Possessing a skill or piece of knowledge is not the same thing as being able to show it. This is why many smart young people hate school. Understanding, figuring out, and getting a handle on a piece of knowledge is really exciting, but having to prove to somebody else that you understand is a big fat pain in the neck.

Finding proof of student learning is a huge part of the teacher's job, and whether it is done poorly or not makes all the difference in that teacher's effectiveness. There is a huge difference between “How do I figure out if this student understands” and “How do I make this student prove to me he gets it.” The first is a valuable approach; the second is the first step on the road toward wasting everybody's time.

And there's the problem. If we start with the assumption(假定)that a student who knows must be able to show his knowledge to our satisfaction, we will be traveling down the wrong road. The more we demand that students prove to us that they know the stuff, the more we will design artificial tasks that demand a set of skills and knowledge entirely different from the skills and knowledge we really want to measure.

As a classroom teacher, I have to remember that the burden is on me to find a way to see what my students know; the burden is not on them to put on whatever trained monkey show I design for my own ease and convenience.

It may not be the worst thing ever to say “Students should be able to show what they know.” But I think it's far more useful to say, “Teachers should be able to discover what students know.”

1What does the underlined phrase in the second paragraph mean?

    A.Very dangerous. B.Very annoying.

    C.Very difficult. D.Very frequent.

2According to the third paragraph, a teacher should have the ability to   .

    A.discover whether his students know

B.avoid wasting the precious time in class

    C.apply various approaches while teaching

D.give students the chance to prove themselves

3What does the author think of the artificial tasks designed to test students' learning?

A.They should be limited in number.

B.They are a huge burden on teachers.

C.They should mainly focus on effectiveness.

D.They slide away from their original purpose.

4What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Students should be able to show what they know.

B.There are many ways to find proof of student learning.

C.Teachers should be able to discover what students know.

D.There should be better understanding between teachers and students.

  • 24、If you’ve ever been on a fishing boat, you’ve probably seen crowds of birds following it, hoping to catch a snack. Now scientists use those birds’ behavior to track illegal fishing boats.

Researchers attached data loggers to the backs of 169 albatrosses (信天翁) in Indian oceans. Weighing only 42 grams, the devices included a GPS, which enabled them to detect the presence and intensity of radar signals emitting from boats. That information was then sent by satellite, so the researchers could track the location of the birds—and thus the radar-emitting boats—in real time.

The scientists then cross-checked that data against the known locations of boats, collected from a system boats use to declare themselves, called the Automatic Identification System (AIS). And noticeable differences appeared frequently.

More than a third of the times the birds “loggers” detected radar signals, and therefore a boat, but no such boat appeared in the official log—meaning that the vehicles had likely switched off their AIS—something that probably happens in illegal fishing operations.

The work suggests birds could be an effective boat-monitoring tool as long as illegal fishing operations don’t target the birds.

Fortunately, such a task would be difficult. Around fishing boats, you can find hundreds of birds at any one time that are flying around. And the birds with loggers are not marked in any way. So it’s not really possible for fishermen to pick out a specific bird.

But what concerns researchers is that albatrosses often get caught by some fishing boats. Though regulations have been established to protect against that happening—with success—illegal boats don’t necessarily obey. So scientists might be underestimating the risk posed to albatross populations.

【1】What characteristic of albatrosses do scientists take advantage of in their research?

    A.Their feeding patterns.

    B.Their sense of direction.

    C.Their greedy behaviors.

D.Their habit of following fishing boats.

【2】For what purpose does a boat shut off its AIS?

    A.To seek more fishes.

B.To have it mistaken for another.

    C.To avoid being detected.

D.To save the trouble of declaring itself.

【3】What does “such a task” in Paragraph 6 refer to?

    A.Identifying birds with loggers.

    B.Monitoring illegal boats.

    C.Tracking radar signals automatically.

    D.Fishing illegally.

【4】What could be the best title for the text?

A.AIS: an Effective System to Locate Boats

B.Humans Are Good at Discovering Birds’ Nature

C.Data Loggers Help Fishermen Get a Good Harvest

D.Scientists Use Birds to Track Illegal Fishing Operations

A set of textbooks designed to help high school students learn about traditional Chinese culture is to be published soon Beijing Times reported on Monday.

The books are the first national-level works of their kind and have been developed by a working group that promotes traditional culture. They will be used by students from autumn this year the report said.

The set contains four classics from ancient times. Two of the works Confucian Analects and Mencius are for 10 th -grade students while the other two Great Learning and Dao De Jing will be used by 11 th graders.

The initiative follows a series of steps the authorities have taken in recent years to spread and promote traditional Chinese culture on campus.

Last April the Ministry of Education released a series of guidelines requiring the inclusion of more information about traditional culture in primary and middle school textbooks especially those used for subjects such as Chinese language history art and physical education.

The guidelines said students’ knowledge of traditional culture will be tested in the senior high school entrance examination and the gaokao --- the college entrance exam.
