二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The native Americans, the people we call the “Indians”, had been in America for many thousands of years before Columbus arrived in 1492. Columbus thought he had arrived in India, so he called the native people “Indians”.

The Indians were kind to the early settlers. They were not afraid of them and they wanted to help them. They showed the settlers the new world around them. They taught them about the local crops like sweet potatoes, corn and peanuts. They introduced the Europeans to chocolate and to the turkey and the Europeans did business with the Indians.

But soon the settlers wanted bigger farms and more land for themselves and their families. More and more immigrants were coming from Europe and all these people needed land. So the Europeans started to take the land from the Indians. Naturally, when the whites started taking all the Indians’ land, the Indians started fighting back.

But the whites were stronger and cleverer. Slowly they pushed the Indians into those parts of the continent that the whites didn’t want- the parts where it was too cold or too dry or too mountainous to live comfortably. By 1875 the Indians were living in special places called “reservations”. But even here the whites took land from them- perhaps the whites wanted the wood, or perhaps the land had important minerals in it, or they even wanted to make national parks there. So even on their reservations the Indians were not safe from the whites.

There are many Hollywood films about the fight between the Indians and the whites. Usually in these films the Indians are bad and the whites are good and brave. But was it really like that? What do you think? Do you think the Indians were right or wrong to fight against the whites?

D.The Indians were stronger and cleverer than the white settlers.

A.the Indians are usually beautified in the films

B.the author is doubtful about what the films show to us

  • 22、   I waited until my Ph. D. committee had left the room to break down. I had just failed my dissertation proposal defense (学位论文答辩)a poor start to my fourth year of grad school (研究生院). My committee members had told me that my experiments were too small-scale, my ideas not deep enough. I realize now that they were pushing me because they believed in me. But at that moment, all I could hear was the voice in my head telling me that I’d failed.

For the next 4 months, I lacked focus at work. I no longer double-checked my experiments, and I had trouble finding the energy to even think about re-writing my proposal.

Actually, the outcome of my proposal defense wasn’t the only cause of my slump. After some thought, it dawned on me that I had been putting undue pressure on myself throughout grad school. To believe I was making good progress, I needed external validation-an award, positive results, or praise from professors I respected. When I didn’t get those things at every opportunity, I felt I was not on the right track. When I didn’t pass the defense, the failure confirmed my self-doubts. Eventually, as my loss of confidence became a bigger problem, I knew that I had to do something about it.

I decided that I needed to set healthier standards for myself. I did not have control over how much praise I received. The only thing I had control over, I realized, was the effort I put forth.

I went into my second proposal defense with a much more positive mindset (思维模式) along with grander experiments in my proposal and passed. I’m pleased to report that my new approach has helped me regain confidence in myself — and my work — and I’m more productive as a result. I hope that I can help other students realize that external validation is not always guaranteed, and if they are doing their best, that is good enough.

1What directly leads to the failure of the author’s first defense?

    A.Imperfection of his proposal.

    B.His negative mindset.

    C.The committee’s lack of confidence.

    D.The choice of his experiments.

2What can we learn about the author from paragraph 3?

A.He was under a lot of pressure from his parents.

B.He made progress with the help of his professor.

C.He used to overemphasize the recognition he got.

D.Getting positive results helped him get over shyness.

3Which word can best describe the author?

    A.Adaptable.

    B.Ambitious.

    C.Generous.

    D.Outgoing.

4What does the text mainly tell us?

A.We should spend more time reflecting.

B.We should be thankful for our failures.

C.We should focus more on our own effort.

D.We should keep calm in the face of failure.

  • 23、   China’s 40-year-long process of reform and opening up meant foreign influences gaining a foothold(一席之地) in the country. However, now the process can also be viewed in the opposite way, that is, the outside world is opening up as a receptacle for Chinese culture. Where once it was all a matter of Chinese people fascinated by Hollywood movies, a new “soft power” trend is taking Chinese pop music, TV series and novels to appreciative audiences abroad.

Englishwoman Hollie Sowden and American Nora Wilson developed a website called “Written Chinese,” with a Chinese woman named Chamcen Liu. The website provides a dictionary and other Mandarin-learning tools. Wilson says, “At the beginning, it was just a Facebook page where we posted characters, their meanings and example sentences. That page expanded like crazy, with nearly 280, 000 followers. That’s why we decided to develop a dictionary app and then the website.”

Sowden and Wilson aren’t the only eager to tap world interest in China.

Years ago, groups formed in the US to provide English subtitles for popular Chinese TV dramas. There are also websites translating Chinese novels, especially fantasy series. Wuxia World and Gravity Tales are two examples, with tens of thousands of followers on their Facebook pages.

Chinese music, too, is walking through the open door that once was a one-way street. Melody C2E is a student club at the Shanghai International Studies University. It now has around 300, 000 subscribers. The inspiration is rooted in 2016, when Pan Jianghao heard a youth envoy(公使) for the United Nations say that the world wanted to hear more from Chinese young people. Motivated by his words, Pan and Lin Hongying decided to found a new musical group and share Chinese pop songs with the rest of the world via English translation.

1What does the underlined word “receptacle” in paragraph 1 probably mean?

    A.Container. B.Dormitory.

    C.Center. D.Foundation.

2What do we know about “Written Chinese”?

    A.It has nearly 280, 000 followers.

    B.It helps learn Chinese characters.

C.It involves daily life in China.

D.It is developed by two foreigners.

3Why was Melody C2E set up?

    A.To motivate Chinese young people.

    B.To preserve Chinese traditional songs.

C.To improve its members’ translation skills.

D.To introduce Chinese pop songs to the globe.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Foreign Websites with a Chinese Touch

B.Competition Leading to a Culture Boom

C.China’s Cultural Footprint on Foreign Shores

D.Reform and Opening up Shaping a New Generation
