二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Jayce Crowder began noticing when he was in kindergarten that he looked different from his classmates. They had two hands. He had one.

It started when one boy teased him, said his mother, Cortney Lewis. He'd return to their home in Des Moines, Iowa with questions:Why am I different? Why me? Why? How could she provide answers to her son's questions when she had never found those answers herself?

A few weeks later, Lewis came home and turned on the TV. There was a news story about an eighth grader from Washington, Iowa. Trashaun Willis, then 14, had become an Internet sensation after posting videos of his slam dunks, and, like Jayce, most of his left arm was missing. Lewis called Jayce in. He was amazed, watching dunk after dunk.

At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be an inspiring moment for Jayce. But little did Lewis know that a family friend had already reached out to The Des Moines Register, asking the newspaper to help set up a meeting with Trashaun to build up Jayce's confidence. The day was not spent on self-pity. They rode bikes around the schools hall ways, took photos, played hide-and-seek, and shot baskets.

At one point, Trashaun did get serious with Jayce. He talked about their left arms. He told Jayce he was perfect the way life made him. He asked Jayce not to let anyone drag him down and not let words shake his confidence. "It reassured me," said Lewis. "I know in my heart that everything's going to be OK. Trashaun has grown up to be a wonderful kid. And I know Jayce is too. As a parent, that's all you want to know:Everything's going to be OK. "

Since that meeting, Lewis has seen a pronounced difference in her son. He recently started wrestling and loved it. Lewis pointed to Trashaun's influence. Meeting him, she said, made Jayce understand that there were others like him.

As for Trashaun, his relationship with Jayce made him look forward to helping more kids, perhaps as a youth coach in NubAbility, a non-profit organization dedicated to coaching kids with limb differences.

【1】What was Lewis' reaction to her son’s questions?

    A.She was in shock.

    B.She felt lost.

  • 22、According to a new US study, couples who expect their children to help care for them in old age should hope they have daughters because they are likely to be twice as attentive overall.

The research by Angelina Grigoryeva, a sociologist at Princeton University, found that, while women provide as much care for their elderly parents as they can manage, men do as little as they can get away with and often leave it to female family members.

Her analysis of the family networks of 26,000 older Americans concluded that gender(性别) is the most important predictor(预示物) of whether or not people will actively care for elderly parents.

In a paper being presented at the annual conference of the American Sociological Association in San Francisco, she concludes that simply having a sister makes men statistically likely provide less care.

Using data from the University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study, a study which has been tracking a cross-section of over-50s for the last decade, she calculated that women provide an average of 12.3 hours a month of care for elderly parents while men offer only 5.6 hours.

“Sons reduce their relative care-giving efforts when they have a sister, while daughters increase theirs when they have a brother.”

“This suggests that sons pass on parent care-giving responsibilities to their sisters.”

In the UK, the 2011 census(人口普查) showed that there are now around 6.5 million people with caring responsibilities, a figure which has risen by a tenth in a decade.

But many are doing so at the risk of their own health. The census showed that those who provide 50 hours or more of care a week while trying to hold down a full-time job are three times more likely to be struggling with ill health than their working counterparts(相对应的人) who are not carers.

【1In the text, what’s the most important factor to predict if people will actively care for the elderly?

    A. Career.   B. Education.

    C. Gender.   D. Family networks.

【2】The US study finds that _______.

    A. sons are twice likely as daughters to care for parents in old age

    B. having a sister makes men less likely to do their fair share

    C. sons and daughters seem to give equal care to their parents

    D. sons are unwilling to leave care-giving responsibilities to female family members

【3】What does the author stress in the last paragraph?

    A. People should give up their jobs to care for the elderly.

    B. Many care providers work longer hours than others.

    C. People shouldn’t pass on caring responsibilities to others.

    D. Many care providers have potential health problems.

【4】The author develops the text by _______.

    A. analyzing various research and data

    B. describing people’s experiences

    C. explaining social networks of careers

    D. comparing different gender behavior

  • 23、"I’d like to be at a healthier weight," a friend told me. "But we just don’t have the money to buy expensive diet foods and there isn’t enough money to join a gym." Many people feel that way — that a healthy diet and exercise plan is out of reach because of their high cost. Don’t lose hope! We’ll be looking at ways to make healthy choices without spending too much money.

First you don’t need to buy the expensive pre-prepared "diet foods". Back in the early 1970s when I started housekeeping, 90% of the food I bought was ingredients (原料). Very few things were preprocessed (预处理的). Now 90% of the food you find in the store is quick food. That’s a bad thing.

Quick foods like boxed "just add hamburger" meals have had the fiber removed to make them faster to prepare. Take a look at the label (标签) on that box. It often has low numbers listed under "fiber" because fiber takes longer to digest. If the low fiber meal is digested, the result is that your body begins to store fat. Besides, your body is short of nutrients (营养物质). You will be driven to eat more to try to make up for the low quality of the food you are eating.

And then there are the chemicals the producers add to the quick meals to make them palatable. If not, the stuff would taste like cardboard and you wouldn’t enjoy it. However, these chemicals certainly aren’t good for your health.

What’s the answer? Buy whole ingredients and give up the expensive, low nutrition, processed foods. Do the cooking yourself and you will have control over what is in your food — and it will cost less, too.

【1】People who find it hard to get a healthier weight think __________.

A.they had too much diet food

    B.they didn’t make a detailed plan

C.they have no time to do exercise in gym

D.they can’t afford diet food and to exercise in gym

【2】The author doesn’t like quick food mainly because __________.

    A.it contains too much fat

    B.it makes people eat more

    C.it has low fiber

    D.it takes longer to digest

【3】The underlined word "palatable" in Paragraph 4 means __________.

    A.fresh

    B.delicious

    C.healthy

    D.poor

【4】The author suggests in the text that people should __________.

    A.control the amount of food

    B.eat more processed foods

    C.cook food for themselves

    D.choose cheap ingredients

  • 24、Public security authorities nationwide have found 2,609 missing and abducted children since January, one of whom had been missing for 61 years, said an official with the Ministry of Public Security on Tuesday.

They have also resolved 147 cases of child abduction and trafficking and arrested 372 suspects, said Tong Bishan, deputy head of the ministry’s Criminal Investigation Bureau.

On June 1, the ministry released the addresses and telephone numbers of more than 3,000 free blood testing sites part of the Tuanyuan operation, which was launched in January to find the missing children. Tuanyuan means “reunion” in English.

Nearly 10,000 people volunteered to have their blood tested at the sites, and so far 306 families have been reunited, Tong said.

After searching for over 24 years, 51-year-old Guo Gangtang was recently reunited with his missing son, Guo Xinzhen, thanks to the help of the police. His now 26-year-old son was abducted in 1997 at the age of two and in 2015, Guo’s story was made into the movie Lost and Love starring Hong Kong actor, Andy Lau.

In June, public security experts used the latest testing and matching methods to successfully trace the son to Henan province. After the DNA was retested, the police finally confirmed his identity. Later, two suspects involved in the case were captured.

A.To indicate that Guo Gangtang should be responsible for his son’s abduction.

C.To show that the latest blood testing and matching methods are useful ways to search for abducted children.

D.To emphasize that the police confirmed two suspects’ identity by testing their DNA.
