And as you might expect, Dollywood features lots of holiday-themed shows and performances. The highlight is“Christmas in the Smokies”, an impressive production that is a tradition at the park. It is being presented indoors at Dolly Parton’s Celebrity Theater, although groups are being seated separately, and the audience capacity is reduced by about 50%. “Everybody needs a little light this Christmas,” says Pete Owens, VP of marketing and public relations.

  • 22、   It is not easy to excite New Yorkers. This is one reason why actors and other famous people move to the city. They can live quieter lives and escape the paparazzi(狗仔队)photographers who would follow then in Hollywood.

But New York has a new media star. And this star is not living so quietly.

The star is a colorful Mandarin duck. The bird first appeared this month in a small body of water in Manhattan's Central Park.

Large crowds have gathered to see the duck. Reporters have been following its every move. The media attention on the duck has earned the name "quackarazzi"-a word combination of paparazzi and the sound a duck makes!

The duck has chosen to live in a costly pan of New York-just off Fifth Avenue, near the historic Plaza Hotel. There, hundreds of people turn up every day, hoping to see the bird show off its extremely colorful feathers.

Many people like the duck because its colors are like "sunsets," says New Yorker Joe Amato. He comes to the park nearly every day with his camera equipment.

Bird expert Paul Sweet heads a large collection of bird species at the New York-based American Museum of Natural History. He says there is nothing special about a Mandarin duck in Central Park. Central Park Zoo has its own Mandarin duck, he says. These ducks are often imported to the United States from Asia for use on private property.

Sometimes they escape, he said. Sweet said he believes this duck is an escapee. If it were wild, he added, traditional bird watchers-often called birders-would be "very excited." And they are not. "A lot of non-birders tend to see colorful birds as more beautiful," Sweet said. "But to me, it's no more beautiful than, say, a sparrow."

In this case, though, common New Yorkers get to decide what is beautiful. And they have clearly chosen this Mandarin duck.

1What does paragraph 1 want to tell us?

    A.Nothing can excite New Yorkers.

B.New Yorkers are hard to be attracted.

C.There are no actors or stars in New York.

D.Paparazzi photographers are popular in New York.

2Who can be called "quackarazzi" according to the text?

    A.All New Yorkers. B.Paparazzi photographers.

C.Reporters following the duck. D.The bird experts.

3What can we learn from Paul Sweet's saying?

A.This Mandarin duck is very special.

    B.The birdwatchers are very excited.

C.The Mandarin duck got away from somewhere in U.S.

D.Paul Sweet believes the Mandarin duck is more beautiful than a sparrow.

4What is the attitude of the New Yorkers to the duck?

    A.Welcoming. B.Indifferent.

    C.Resistant. D.Unclear.

  • 23、   I am a taxi driver. One Monday morning, I had stopped at New York Hospital when I found a well-dressed man coming over. He was waving to me. I waited until he jumped into the taxi. “La Guardia Airport, please,” he said.

As always, I wondered about my passenger. “What do you do?” “I am working at the hospital.” For some unknown reason, I decided to ask for his help.

“Could I ask a favor of you?” He didn’t answer. “I have a son, 16. He’s doing well in school. He wants a job this summer. Is there any possibility that you might get him a summer job?” After a minute, he said, “The medical students have a research project. Maybe he could fit in. Have him send me his school records.” He searched his pocket and handed me a card.

That evening, I pulled the card from my pocket. “Robbie,” I said proudly, “This could be a summer job for you. Send him your school records.” He read it out loud, “Fred Plum, New York Hospital.” “Is this a joke?” he said in doubt. After I shouted and threatened (恐吓) to cut off his pocket-money, Robbie promised to send off his grades the next morning.

Two weeks later, when I arrived home, my son handed me a letter from Plum. He was to phone Plum’s secretary for an interview.

Robbie got the job. The white coat he wore made him feel more important than he really was. As high school graduation neared, Plum was kind enough to write letters of recommendation (推荐) for universities. At last, Robbie was admitted to New York Medical College.

It never happened to me that a stranger should change my son’s future.

1The author threatened to cut off Robbie’s pocket-money probably because _________.

    A.he was tired after a day’s work. B.he didn’t earn enough money.

C.Robbie was unwilling to work. D.Robbie didn’t believe what he said.

2It can be inferred from the passage that Plum is _________.

A.patient and selfless. B.generous and careful.

C.kind and helpful. D.wealthy and handsome.

3What message does the passage want to tell us?

A.A stranger may change your life.

B.One must be friendly to strangers.

C.A father should be responsible for his son.

D.Doctors may have a great effect on people.

  • 24、

Recent studies have shown that challenging your brain, by spurring (刺激) the brain to create new patterns, is very important to keep your brain active and healthy as you age. Lifelong learning is a health club for our minds, bodies and spirits. This is why we parents should also teach our children to be lifelong learners. Dr. Marilyn Price-Mitchell, an American psychologist, and youth development expert, shares some ways for us to do this.

    1. Ask questions.

When your child asks you a question, don't answer it straight away. Instead, help him or her bring up “questions that pique their curiosity.” This way, we help children make connections between what they're learning at school and the world beyond their classroom. We also show them that learning does not, and should not, end when one is “done with school” — it's actually a lifelong process!

    2. Let them fail.

Our kids love learning about different scientific concepts (概念) via The Magic School Bus videos on YouTube. And one of the characters, Miss Frizzle (the science teacher) always says this phrase: “Take chances, make mistakes, and get messy.” I always quote (引述) her when the kids say they're afraid to do or learn something because they might do it wrong or make a mistake. If we don't allow our kids to fail, they won't be able to learn to “use mistakes and failures to make lifelong learning easier,” as Dr. Price-Mitchell says.

    3. Learn through experience.

This is very true for all of us, especially children. In the words of Dr. Price-Mitchell, “Learning through experience, not just from books, is one of the best ways to give the youth the skills they need for lifelong learning, living, and working in the 21st century.”

Of course, we should also set an example for our children — by learning continuously, and expanding our knowledge and experiences.

【1】What does the underlined word “pique” in the text probably mean?

    A.Change.

    B.Awaken.

    C.Balance.

    D.Prevent.

【2】What's the author's attitude to what Miss Frizzle always says?

    A.Worried.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Uncaring.

    D.Supportive.

【3】Which of the following shows the importance of learning through experience?

A.Learning is not child's play; we cannot learn without pain.

B.It is not that I'm so smart. But I stay with the questions much longer.

C.If you don't learn to think when you are young, you may never learn.

D.Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.

【4】In which part of a newspaper will the text most probably appear?

    A.Health.

    B.Culture.

    C.Education.

    D.Popular science.
