21、 Everyone gets anxious when the world takes an uncertain turn. And often, we treat that anxiety with a little panic buying.
A study published last year in the Journal of Consumer Research found that people buy things in troubled times as a means of keeping control over their lives. The researchers noted that utility items — specifically, cleaning products — tend to move most quickly from store shelves. The hoarding (囤积) of toilet paper, as perhaps the most fundamental cleaning product, may represent our most fundamental fears. An invisible enemy moves slowly and quietly towards us. We need to hold on to something in uncertain times. Maybe a hoard of toilet paper brings promises.
The thing is, it’s not actually going anywhere. For all the sharp words and even sharper elbows thrown around by the crazy toilet paper shoppers, they seem to be missing one essential fact: There is no toilet paper shortage.
As The New York Times points out, shop owners that see their shelves emptied often fill up the shelves again in a day, often in just a few hours.
“You are not using more of it. You are just filling up your closet with it,” Jeff Anderson, president of paper product manufacturer Precision Paper Converters, tells the Times.
The thing is, the toilet paper-obsessed shoppers have been infected with something many times more contagious (感染性的) than any coronavirus: fear.
“People are social creatures. We look to each other for cues for what is safe and what is dangerous,” Steven Taylor, a clinical psychologist at the University of British Columbia, tells Fox News. “And when you see someone in the store panic-buying, that can cause a fear contagion effect. People become anxious ahead of the actual infection. They haven’t thought about the bigger picture, like what are the consequences of hoarding toilet paper.”

22、 Rescuing victims from a burning building, a chemical spill, or any disaster that is inaccessible to human responders could one day be a task for adaptable robots. Imagine, for instance, rescue-robots rising up on two legs can bound through rubble (碎石), push aside a heavy obstacle, or break through a locked door.
Engineers are improving the design of four-legged robots and their ability to run, jump and even do back leaps. But getting two-legged, human-like robots to use force or push against something without falling has been a lion in the way.
Now engineers at MIT and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have developed a method to control balance in a two-legged, tele-operated robot-an essential step toward enabling a human-like to carry out high-impact tasks in challenging environments. The team’s robot, physically resembling a machined body and two legs, is controlled remotely by a human operator wearing a vest that sends information about the human’s motion and ground reaction forces to the robot. Through the vest, the human operator can direct and experience the robot’s movements. If the robot is starting to tip over, the human feels the same pull on the vest and can adjust in a way to rebalance both himself and the robot.
In experiments with the robot to test this new “balance feedback” approach, the researchers were able to remotely maintain the robot’s balance as it jumped and walked in sync (同步) with its human operator.
“It’s like running with a heavy backpack-you can feel how the dynamics (力) of the backpack move around you, and you can make up properly,” says Joao Ramos, who developed the approach as an MIT Postdoctor. “Now if you want to open a heavy door, the human can command the robot to throw its body at the door and push it open, without losing balance.”

23、 Who can be volunteering?
A Ugandan NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) was formed by members of a rural community in South-west Uganda in 2007. They developed a local school for children aging from 3 to 15 from poor families, and started community based projects that will equip the young villagers with the skills and knowledge to face a safer and brighter future.
The project itself is well integrated into the community and those undertaking volunteering work are always given a warm welcome, especially by the local children who love spending time with volunteers from all ages and backgrounds.
Volunteering at Uganda Lodge is suitable for families, gap year teenagers, seniors etc.
For medical students we can offer you official medical elective course scores with no additional fees charged. Staying at Uganda Lodge could also count for the residential section of the Gold Award and Queens Scout Awards.
What can I do?
You need to speak English. Even if you are not a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) teacher (although useful!), you can go into the classrooms and make a meaningful difference. Experienced teachers can take over a whole class if they wish, after consulting with the teacher on content.
We now have over 500 students in the Ruhanga Development School and they are in urgent need of teachers. English conversation is needed for the older children in particular, also showing picture books etc. or simply talking to babies helps inspire their mental and physical growth.
Children at our kindergartens and primary schools do love help from our volunteers to learn new rhymes and songs, talk about pictures in books or get inspirations with craftwork and painting.

24、 The beginning of baseball in China traces back further than most would think, in 1863. From that time, Chinese universities soon began to stage baseball activities. The first game, as documents recorded, was held in Shanghai in 1905. National interest in this traditionally American sport picked up quickly, and in 1915, China placed second in the Greater Asia baseball tournament held in Shanghai. Several decades later, baseball was as popular as it would ever be. In 1959,teams from 30 regions came together in a national competition.
Founded in 2002, the China Baseball League (CBL) is China’s professional league for the sport, with seven teams around the country. The opportunity to capture a huge new market with China’s growing interest saw the US Major League Baseball (MLB) open its first China office in Beijing in 2007, which has since then developed the Chinese market and educated young athletes. An example is the youth baseball program Play Ball in major Chinese cities. In the same year, the CBL partnered with Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), agreeing to allow Japanese clubs to send coaches and players to China and Chinese players to train at Japanese facilities. This program helps Chinese schools integrate baseball into their physical education curriculum, build professional development centers. More and more Chinese youths are getting involved with the sport, taking baseball class on the weekends or after school. Many programs for children have been established and often hold classes at many baseball fields.
Through these different partnerships and co-operations, China has created opportunities for the citizens to experience another culture. China might just be the future of baseball. Through heavy investments since 2017, the CBL hopes to one day cultivate a Yao Ming of baseball, which would bring huge exposure to the sport.
