21、 When we sleep, our brains clear out the memories we've made while we're awake, deciding what to keep and what to discard. Forgetting is an active process, explained the authors of a study published in the journal Science. But less is known about this process during the different stages of sleep.
The team found that during the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep stage, when active sleep happens and we are thought to dream, special nerve(神经)cells appear to actively lead to forgetting. What are known as MCH neurons(神经元)sit in the hypothalamus ——a part of the brain which helps with a range of functions such as sleep, appetite and emotions. Past research has suggested these cells help to control REM sleep patterns.
The team looked at MCH neurons in mice, and found 52.8 percent were active during REM sleep, compared with 35 percent when the mice were awake. They also turned MCH neurons on and off during memory tests. MCH cells appeared to send messages to the part of the brain to stop the formation of memories.
Study co-author Thomas Kilduff said the team was surprised to find that mice performed better on learning and memory tasks when the MCH cells were inhibited(受抑制).“This result suggests that stimulation of the MCH neurons may disturb memory strengthening - that is, MCH neurons may help forgetting," Kilduff explained.
Asked what motivated the study, Kilduff said, "There is research argument about the role of sleep-in learning and memory, specifically, whether REM sleep, slow-wave sleep or both types of sleep are important for memory strengthening."
Kilduff acknowledged the study was conducted only on mice, not on humans. Also, mice are animals that remain active at night, with periods of sleeping and being awake distributed throughout the day and night, whereas most humans have a single sleep period that usually occurs at night, he said.

22、 The Internet is the largest library in the history of the world and a great resource for anyone seeking information. 【1】 In recent years, plagiarism from online sources has become a serious problem, especially among students.
Original written work and information are protected by copyright laws. Therefore, when you use information you find while doing research, you should always give credit to the person that produced it. To plagiarize is to use ideas that are not your own without giving credit to the original source, or to claim that someone else’s ideas are your own. This is a dishonest practice.
Internet-related plagiarism has become such a problem. 【2】 There are thousands of resources for students who wish only to copy or cheat. However, the Internet also makes it easier for educators to check for plagiarism. Often a simple Internet search for a quote will be enough to expose copying. 【3】 Because copying and pasting(粘贴) is so easy, it is becoming more and more common for well-meaning students to mix up source material with their original ideas. While unintended plagiarism usually happens innocently, it is still a mistake.
【4】 Usually, the first step of researching is to gather information. You’d better keep a computer document named “References” where you can keep useful information you search on the Internet. Copy and paste the material directly from the document. When you print out parts of the article from the document, print the first page of the article. 【5】 These will help you remember the source of the information. Then print pages that have the information you need. After you finish your assignment, in the same way that you review your work for clarity and mistakes, you need to check that you have matched the quoted information with the correct source. Following these tips, you will avoid mixing up source material with your ideas.
A.It lists details like the name of writer and publication.
B.But doing research on the Internet is not without its risks.
C.This is because it is so easy to find and copy information online.
D.Some educators are more concerned about unintended plagiarism.
E.In addition to dishonesty, plagiarism is a lost opportunity for students.
F.To avoid unintended plagiarizing, managing your sources becomes important.
G.If you use ideas from other writers without quoting from the original work, you’re plagiarizing.
23、 The giant panda is beloved of conservationists. It is one of the most recognisable large animals in the world. But it is also evolutionarily odd. It is a type of bear but it is a herbivore(食草动物). It is ironic, then, that this icon of the natural world might actually be an accidental consequence of human activity. Yet this is a convincing interpretation of results just published in a paper in Current Biology, by Wei Fuwen of the Institute of Zoology, in Beijing.
Pandas are not merely herbivores, they are monovores-merely eating bamboo only. Dr Wei wondered when this transition to monovory happened. The answer was, far more recently than anyone had expected.
Dr Wei studied carbon and nitrogen isotopes(同位素) in the bones of a dozen ancestral pandas, dating from between 11,000 and 5,000 years ago, and compared them with those of modern pandas. The study shows that the ancient pandas lived in more varied environments and had broader diets. What is more, they were not yet the obligate(专性的) bamboo feeders which they are today, and they were making subtropical zones and open land their home, rather than living merely in bamboo forests. The question is, what made them change?
There is one obvious possible cause: the spread of man. Organised states clearly existed by about 5,000 years ago. Growing human populations could easily have displaced the ancestors of modern pandas to fringe areas where there was little to eat but bamboo. And if bamboo is all there is to eat, then those that prefer to eat it will be at an evolutionary advantage. The modern, bamboo-eating panda-symbol of animals under pressure from man-may thus have been made the way it is by precisely such human pressures.
【1】How did Dr. Wei conduct research into the transition of pandas?
A.Studying the diets of pandas.
B.Calculating the number of pandas.
C.Studying the structure of genes of pandas.
D.Analyzing the isotopic composition of pandas’ bones and teeth.
【2】What may lead to the change of pandas’ broad diets to eating bamboo only?
A.The change of their genes.
B.The intended invasion of other herbivores.
C.The unintentional expansion of human activity.
D.The decline in their habitat and thus the shortage of food.
【3】What can be the best title for the text?
A.Panda Evolution: By the Hand of Man? B.Panda: beloved but odd
C.Panda: Herbivores or Monovores? D.A Study of Ancient Pandas
24、There are some things money can’t buy. Education, however, does not appear to be among them—at least as measured by performance on international exams. A new study by Harvard University offers strong evidence that the wealth of a country affects exam results just as much as the wealth of a pupil’s household does. On average, pupils in wealthy countries obtain vastly higher test scores than those in developing ones.
Evaluating test scores around the world is harder than it sounds. Although pupils in the rich world mostly take one of a few big international exams, many developing countries rely on regional tests, making apples-to-apples comparisons impossible.
Researchers organized an exam in 2016 for 2,314 children in India, which included both questions from the leading tests and ones taken from smaller exams. Using answers from the same pupils on the same day to questions from different tests, they built a statistical model they called a “Rosetta Stone”. It can translate scores from a range of exams—such as one used only in west Africa—into an equal mark on other common international tests.
They then used these equations(等式)to estimate how pupils in 80 different countries would fare on the benchmark(基准)Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). Their data show that the wealth of a student’s country and family have similar impacts on test scores—meaning that big gaps in GDP per person matter more than small ones in household income do. For example, pupils from families that are very poor by rich-world standards—those earning $5,000 a year—are expected to score around 500 out of 1,000 on the TIMSS in America, and 560 in Japan. In contrast, those whose parents make $10,000 a year in an upper-middle income country can only get the equivalent(等价物)of a 475.
The influence of parental earnings is not constant. Rich people tend to educate their children privately in places where wealth is concentrated, such as Brazil. However, in countries with relatively flat income distributions, like Croatia, pupils from different social classes are more likely to attend the same schools. This could reduce the impact of family wealth on test scores.
【1】Why is it hard to evaluate the exam scores on a global level?
A.Because the types of exams vary with countries.
B.Because many rich countries refuse regional tests.
C.Because the wealth of a country affects exam results.
D.Because no international exam is available to poor areas.
【2】Why did the researchers establish a “Rosetta Stone”?
A.To integrate different exams into a common one.
B.To evaluate different exams with distinct approaches.
C.To fix the standard of the exams in different countries.
D.To turn scores of different exams into an equivalent mark.
【3】What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A.Poor students tend to be academically superior to rich ones.
B.Students from rich families will definitely get higher grades.
C.The influence of family income on students is related to circumstances.
D.People with high social status are more likely to educate their children privately.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.Education is something money can’t buy.
B.The wealth of a country matters for education.
C.Family income plays an important role in education.
D.A statistical model helps to evaluate the exam scores.
