  • 26、   There is a man watching me. He doesn’t think I know he’s there, but I do. He carries some sort of machine and it is making me nervous. I’ve been using the back entrance (入口) because I don’t think he knows it is there. I worry about going outside but with a young family to feed I have to. I go and come back quickly. So far I have managed to bring in the meals without him realising I’m gone. The family know something is wrong even though I try to keep it from them by acting normally and keeping them away from the front entrance.

My family are getting bored. They need to stretch their legs and run and play in the open. We can’t stay prisoners like this for much longer. I’m going out for supplies and decide that if the watcher is still there when we have eaten I will face the danger.

The time has come, the meal is over and he is still there, still watching. I push the family back and away from the entrance. I walk slowly down the passage and outside. I take a few steps forward and sit down—I stare at him. He seems unsettled (混乱的) by my appearance and moves his machine about. The birds nearby go silent as I break into a run. I must protect my family.

“Good evening and welcome to the BBC news at ten. Here are the latest headlines. Filming of David Attenborough’s latest wildlife documentary came to a dramatic and unexpected stop today after a vicious (凶猛危险的) tiger attack, but Mr. Attenborough said he was just thankful that she only warned him off as she could easily have killed him. The BBC has been told that no further filming will take place in that location.”

All is quiet. He has gone. No one is watching. My family are safe.

1“I” tried to act normally in order to ________.

A.think out an idea B.give warnings to the man

C.calm down “my” family D.show “my” courage

2What did “I” do to protect the family?

A.“I” scared away the man at last. B.“I” prevented “my” kids from going out.

C.“I” reported it to the BBC news. D.“I” bravely fought with the man.

3The machine held by the man might be a ________.

    A.telescope B.camera

    C.twoway radio D.gun

4The passage is intended to ________.

A.convince us of an idea B.describe an adventure

  • 27、   Kobe Bryant was one of nine people killed in a helicopter crash on 26, Jan. 2019. He was 41. His 13-year-old daughter Gianna was also killed in the crash. Bryant was one of the greatest NBA players of all-time and an icon in the sports world. In addition to his success on the basketball court, Bryant was known for a ceaseless work ethic and incredible drive.

In honor of Bryant’s legacy, here are some inspiring quotes from Bryant on hard work, success, and life.

    On achieving success:

“When you make a choice and say, ‘Come hell or high water, I am going to be this,’ then you should not be surprised when you are that. It should not be something that is intoxicating or out of character because you have seen this moment for so long that ... when that moment comes, of course it is here because it has been here the whole time, because it has been [in your mind] the whole time.”

    On failure:

“I don’t mean to sound cavalier when I say that, but never. It’s basketball. I’ve practiced and practiced and played so many times. There’s nothing truly to be afraid of, when you think about it ... Because I’ve failed before, and I woke up the next morning, and I’m OK. People say bad things about you in the paper on Monday, and then on Wednesday, you're the greatest thing since sliced bread. I’ve seen that cycle, so why would I be nervous about it happening?”

    On life:

“There’s a choice that we have to make as people, as individuals. If you want to be great at something there is a choice you have to make. We can all be masters at our craft, but you have to make a choice. What I mean by that is, there are inherent sacrifices that come along with that — family time, hanging out with your friends, being a great friend, being a great son, nephew, whatever the case may be. There are sacrifices that come along with that.”

On retiring and facing the end of his basketball career:

“There is beauty in that. I mean, it's going through the cycle. I mean, it's the cycle that is the natural progression of growth, of maturation. I mean, there's no sadness in that ... I see the beauty in not being able to blow past defenders anymore, you know what I mean? I see the beauty in getting up in the morning and being in pain because I know all the hard work that it took to get to this point. So, I’m not, I'm not sad about it. I'm very appreciative of what I've had.”

1What is the attitude of Kobe Bryant towards achieving success by saying “Come hell or high water, I am going to be this”?

    A.Confident B.Determined

    C.Optimistic D.Frightened

2The word “cavalier” in the 3rd paragraph probably means __________.

A.not serious or caring B.anxious and eager

C.worried and pessimistic D.not proud or arrogant

3When it comes to failure, Kobe Bryant tended to __________.

A.fight against those who said bad things about him.

B.worry about others’ comments on his performance.

C.cheer for himself by regarding himself as the greatest figure.

D.show no fear facing ups and downs.

4What can be inferred from the passage?

A.People paid tribute to Kobe Bryant for his success on the basketball court.

B.Kobe Bryant devoted more of his life to basketball instead of accompanying his family.

C.Kobe Bryant regarded his retirement as the beginning of another career.

D.Kobe Bryant felt emotionless when facing the end of his basketball career.

  • 28、   I'm Alice. When 1 was young, my mother made the same dish five nights a week because we were low on cash. She boiled potatoes, carrots, and sometimes, other vegetables on the kitchen stove. Only small amounts of the roast beef that she cooked once a week were added to the bowls. She called it stew(炖菜).

I would hear other children talk about hamburgers, fries, and milkshakes from fast food restaurants, which were expensive at the time. I wished we could eat like that once in a while, but my parents couldn't afford it.

But I look back and I think how blessed I was. My mom took the time to prepare the stew nearly every night. Her portions were right——focusing on the vegetables and not on the meat——and we weren't eating the fat and salt we would have had in take-out food.

I had a lot fewer head colds and flus than my classmates then. If 1 did get sick, I'd be home for a day or two, not a whole week like many of them. Though I became ill more often in my thirties, I have to admit I'd been eating lots of fast food, making up for not getting it as a child. But when I went back to prepare homemade meals without those extra fat and salt, I started to feel healthier.

Today I often find myself enjoying a bowl of my mother's stew. I realize how lucky I was to have a mother who would like to take the time to prepare the slew for her family five evenings a week. That stew was made with love and it has left me with a memory that will warm me forever.

1Why did Alice's mother cook the stew nearly every night when she was young?

A.Because it was a balanced meal. B.Because it was their favorite.

C.Because it was easily cooked. D.Because it might cost less.

2What is the author's purpose of writing paragraph 4?

A.To show us how to cook the stew. B.To explain the effects the stew has on her.

C.To tell us how great her mother is. D.To warn us of the danger of fast food.

3Which of the following can best describe Alice's mother?

    A.Caring B.Strict. C.Humorous. D.Cautious

4What is the best title for the text?

A.My Mothers Daughter B.My Unforgettable Childhood

C.Grateful for the Stew D.Serving Food and Kindness

  • 29、   It's true that highschool coding (编程) classes aren't essential for learning computer science in college. Students without experience can catch up after a few introductory courses said Tom Cortina a professor at Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science.

However Cortina said early exposure is beneficial. When younger kids learn computer science they learn that it's not just a confusing endless string of letters and numbers but a tool to build apps or create artwork or test hypotheses(假说). It's not as hard for them to transform their thought processes as it is for older students. Breaking down problems into bitesized chunks (块) and using code to solve them becomes normal. Giving more children this training could increase the number of people interested in the field and help fill the jobs gap Cortina said.

Students also benefit from learning something about coding before they get to college where introductory computer science classes are packed to the brim which can drive the lessexperienced or determined students away.

The Flatiron School where people pay to learn programming has become popular for adults looking for a career change. The highschoolers get the same curriculum but "we try to adjust lessons based on things they're interested in" said Victoria Friedman an instructor. For instance one of the apps the students are developing suggests movies based on your mood.

The students in the Flatiron class probably won't drop out of high school and build the next Facebook. Programming languages have a quick turnover so the "Ruby on Rails" language they learned may not even be relevant by the time they enter the job market. But the skills they learn --  how to think logically through a problem and organize the results --  apply to any coding language said Deborah Seehorn an education consultant for the state of North Carolina.

Indeed the Flatiron students might not go into IT at all. But creating a future army of coders is not the only purpose of the classes. These kids are going to be surrounded by computers --  in their pockets in their offices in their homes -- for the rest of their lives. The younger they learn how computers think how to coax the machine into producing what they want -- the earlier they learn that they have the power to do that--  the better.

1Cortina believes early exposure to computer science makes it easier to .

    A.make good use of apps

    B.change the way of thinking

C.deal with problems in daily lite

    D.complete future job training

2Deborah Seehorn believes that the skills leaned at Flatiron will .

A.help students learn other computer languages

B.allow students to be admitted to better universities

C.need improving when students look for jobs

D.enable students to make a big fortune

3The underlined word "coax" in the last paragraph is closest in the meaning to .

    A.challenge

    B.persuade

    C.frighten

    D.trick

4According to the last paragraph Flatiron students are expected to .

A.compete with a future army of programmers

B.stay longer in the information technology industry

C.become better prepared for the digital world

    D.bring forth innovative computer technologies

AI artwork sells for $432,500 — nearly 45 times its high1 — as Christie’s becomes the first auction house to offer a work of art created by an algorithm. This portrait, however, is not the product of a human mind. It was created by an2 intelligence, an algorithm defined by that algebraic formula with its many parentheses. And when it went under the3 in the Prints & Multiples sale at Christie’s on 23-25 October, Portrait of Edmond Belamy sold for an4 $432,500, signaling the arrival of AI art on the world auction stage.

From a distance, Portrait of Edmond de Belamy looks almost plausible. Up close, however, the paintwork becomes a grid of mechanical-looking dots, the man’s face a golden blur with black holes for eyes. Look into those eyes. They show no sign of feeling or life. Did a computer make this?

The answer is yes. The first artwork5 by AI to be sold at Christie’s, its6 price would seem to suggest that in future we will get computers to make art for us. Robot van Gogh will harmlessly cut its ear off and robot Picasso will be a genius.

Is this the future AI art visionaries such as the French collective Obvious, which programmed this “painter” by getting it to compare its own work with 15,000 pre-20th century portraits, have in mind? Or are they just, God forbid, making a fast buck from deceivable art collectors? Because believing the algorithm that knocked this up to be in any meaningful way an “artist” is like thinking your voice-interaction programme is out to get you. Dream on. Computers would need to replicate human consciousness before they could replicate the funny thing humans do called “art”.

Art is a way in which human 7 expresses itself, and is equally true of the earliest cave art, Rembrandt’s portraits and Duchamp’s urinal. And that is what is missing from Portrait of Edmond Bellamy. Art is a way humans communicate ideas, perceptions and feelings to each other. It has no 8 outside the human passion to communicate. So in what meaningful sense can an AI replica of certain9 traits of old master paintings be called art?

For a robot to really make art, it would need an autonomous mind that was emotional as well as10. No AI developer has yet claimed to be anywhere near achieving that and if they ever do, their creation will probably have better things to do than paint portraits — like destroy humanity.

Maybe afterwards robots will invent their own kind of art, but it won’t be some poor pastiche of human genius.

It will be beyond anything we organics could imagine.

Go is an ancient Chinese board game that has long been considered one of the great 5faced by AI. While computer programs ow best the world’s leading human players of games like checkers and chess, the high level of intuition and 6required by Go has made it tough for computers to crack. DeepMind’s AlphaGo program is the most 7effort yet, using a complex system of deep neural networks and machine learning; it beat European champion Fan Hui last year, but Lee Se-dol is another 8 rival entirely.

“I don’t regret accepting this challenge,”said Lee.“I am in shock, I admit that, but what’s done is done. I enjoyed this game and look forward to the next.
